A trip up Mauna Kea by Big Island Jeep Rental - car rental by Kona airport

Man we really enjoyed the jeep we rented from you and being able to summit Mauna Kea was the icing on the cake! Having a jeep enabled us to enjoy the Big Island on a whole other level! We will definitely be renting again if we ever make it back!

This was my wife and I first visit to Big Island. We had the privileged of meeting Joe and one of his jeep techs when we arrived to pickup the jeep for our time on the Big Island. Joe and his tech was very friendly and helpful with answering any of our questions. We rented the two door Jeep Wrangler (Daisy was her name :) ) and she was perfect for my wife and I. The softop convertible was an added bonus. I surprised my wife with a the trip up to Mauna Kea to go star gazing at the visitor center. The next morning, we drove back to drive up to the summit. This trip will be talked about for a very long time. The stargazing and the views from the top of the summit was unbelievable. Joe's videos were super helpful on how to operate the 4-low transfer for the trip to the summit. This was my first time driving a 4x4 vehicle and I was a little bit nervous. But with the help of Joe's videos and walk throughs, the drive was very easy and worry free. My wife and I are looking forward to visiting again next year. Definitely going to rent a jeep from Joe's Big Island Jeep Rental and next time, we will go see the sunrise and sunset from the top of the summit. This time I will remember to purchase the Rubber Duck souvenir along with the rental reservation since I forgot to this time around :).

I live here and been up the Mountain many times, even in my BMW convertible. There used to be no Rangers now there are many, too many, and I had one who was very nasty and threatening. They need to tell these Rangers that they are there for our safety and not to bull or treat us as children. It is a fantastic view from on top. I recommend this if you only do one thing here on the Big Island.

I remember driving my honda accord up to the top 12 years ago with snow around and i haven't gotten close to sliding out of control.

We did the drive up 2 weeks ago. One of the highlights of our trip. It was overcast and foggy so we ended up driving out of the clouds for a pretty cool sunset.

Thank you for speaking to the ranger and mentioning age restrictions. I was in the process of planning a trip for my 9,3,1 year olds to see snow for the first time in January as we live on Oahu. Guess we’ll try somewhere else for the next 12 years 🤣

As someone who will be there in about a month, and who has never driven in 4 Low before, what is the process of driving down? Do you use the gas at all while going down the mountain? Or just foot off of the pedals and let the jeep go down on its own?

We plan to go to Mauna Kea in June 2024 (12-20). At 71 years old and overweight, I do not plan to go past the visitor's center. My questions - "Is the sunset great from there?" and "Is the star gazing good from there?

Aloha! Joe here. short answer is no. You can climb up the cinder cone and see from there but still being low oxygen, I wouldn't do it. All 4 of us in our group (ages 40-60) felt our hearts pounding a bit just walking up to the visitor center from the parking lot. I did shoot a video about whether or not you can see the sunset from the visitor center- Yes, a Renegade is fine to get to the visitor center, just not up to the summit as the Renegades don't have 4-low transfer case . kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZWpmIePidiqabs yes stargazing is still nice at the visitor center and there is a guide there that does a whole thing and tells you about the stars, etc
