We are 80 years into the nuclear age, and the results are mixed. We've avoided a wartime detonation since 1945. Contrary to expectations, there are only nine countries with nuclear weapons. And, after a Cold War arms race, we have reduced the number of nuclear weapons from 60,000 to 10,000. Unfortunately, we may be entering a dangerous new chapter of the nuclear story. The probability of nuclear use is on the rise, as is the likelihood of a three-way arms race that is driven by geopolitical competition and technological change. How can we survive and thrive in a world where the laws of physics permit nuclear weapons? What can governments do? What can citizens do? Should I consider a career in nuclear weapons policy, and where might I have the greatest impact?
