Yes! I like to gesso . . . make a few marks ... and put parchment paper and heavy books on top. It gives me a new chunky 5x5 to start on.

Another enjoyable and inspiring vid, Mary! Once again I want to say how much I appreciate and learn from you when I hear your genuine appreciation for your work, or parts of a piece. Was fun to watch you paint the boat - sometimes I think that soon you will just have a magnet on the end of your paintbrush, and one on your palm, and you will paint by barely even holding the brush end🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 BTW, I really loved that little owl painting👍🏼

Ok . . . thanks! For the longest time I did not use sketchbooks. I felt like if I was painting I should be working on a masterpiece. LOL. For a few years now I have embraced sketchbooks and I have lots of them. I'll share on an upcoming video. Thanks for your comment.

You could also do a reverse stencil technique by creating a mask shape you like (like a cat or botanical, a ship or flower). Then paint a solud all around it. Then only you would know of the story under the cat. ❤

Love all your boaty-boat-boats, great fun. Pink boaty-boat, reminds me of my second favorited pirate, Captain Pugwash ( Captain Sparrow being the first) Loved also your treasure stack of 5 x 5’s and quite liked the tall people myself, but you are right, gesso it out if it’s not working for you, who knows what other delight awaits it’s turn to shine through.

Love the art pieces! Did they all begin as a grid sketch?

Thank you! No. I know I haven't done a grid on the festival figures. I usually use the grids for quick . . . mixed media and simple shapes. The grids seem to help me paint quick and loose and sometimes come up with new ideas . . . like using the palette paper for the boats.
