You can use the brass rings made for roman shades as lacing rings. A lot of people use those for lacing rings, because they are cheaper. They come in plastic too, but I prefer metal.

Anybody else notice how Cat's accent had more Scottish after she got back from her trip? I love it. I do the same thing and don't notice until someone tells me.

Wow, one day we'll be calling you Dr. Cat! Best wishes on your PhD journey. I love the kirtle, the blue mystery fabric is so striking.

This was so inspiring! I made a kirtle in purple a few months back and learned a couple things watching this. I am fascinated about the shoulder strap angle: I realised myself that it needs to be slightly angled even if it looks straight when worn, but I should probably made it more angled like your pattern. Also fascinated by the lacing rings. I didn't realise that was an actual thing! I'm so glad I know that now! And that blue is gorgerous! It's my favorite type of blue.

Lovely kirtle! I think it's great that you used a fabric from your stash and still constructed it quite historically correct despite the modern fabric! Also the fork pleating method looked so cool! Have to try that!

This dress is lovely and the blue gives me Belle from Beauty & the Beat flashbacks. Interesting eyelet construction and overall dress construction, thank you for showing us that. And you are right, it is flattering and you look lovely in it.

I appreciate that you are using the fabric you have rather than insisting on period correct fabrics. The period styles lend themselves to many body shapes and sizes that can surely fit in current lifestyles with fun twists in fabric ! Really enjoyed your demonstration ! Thank you for sharing!

Please tell me you have access to that window at 13:35 for future content! It made such a glorious backdrop to your sewing. Also, closed captioning doesn't understand the word "kirtle" and that made for some hilarious captions. "Crystals, commercials, you can't go wrong with Carlos" LOL

You know I have just finished my kirtle (from the same book) and I have the urge to make another one! If I do I might try those rings, as I now know I have miss-interperted the metal rings! I used parts of grommets that I placed INSIDE the dress and hand sewed the eyelets that way. I took my reference from the front cover. But I have loved watching you make a very similar dress it looks lovely and that blue is to die/dye for 😁

I love how well you summarise things throughout the video! It's very clear and straightforward and no fluff. :) This has somewhat sold me on trying a side-lacing kirtle (or something like it); I'd seen some years ago and liked how they looked. I have no idea how soon I'll get to it, though. ^.^

Try taking an inch out of the front of the pattern and adding it under the arms to keep the width of the pattern. That should move the straps in a little more.

Had to redo every level and i believe i am in italy now, but havent played in a while, so i am afraid to look. Love the dress as always. Trying to make a medieval kirtle myself. But tutor will now be added to the making list. Lots of love M.

This garment should have negative ease, how much can depend on individual squishability. It does look like you need to take some out of the center front. I like machine button holes vs lacing rings because the cording doesn’t slip as much when I’m lacing it closed.

Great video but I do have 2 questions if I may. 1: Is is an early Tudor kirtle or later? 2: Your enlargement looks like a pdf pattern? Is it or did you do this yourself? If so may I ask how?
