The fool didn’t even know what a republic was… he was busy enjoying France at the exact same time that Edward Gibbon’s decline and fall of the Roman Republic was published. He had exposure to the book by always being in France. Washington was also obsessed with the Roman Republic because of his relationship with the Marquee de Lafayette who himself was obsessed with the matter (recall: he was also at the forefront of the French Revolution)
