These drums were incredible...such huge potential, but Peavey succumbed to their typical absence of marketing skill.

No, Peavey and Steven Volpp, the designer of the drums, couldn't agree on things during production so they went to court about it. The ruling was, until they came up with an agreement, neither parties were allowed to make them. This came from Steven Volpp himself at Peaveypolooza 2015 at Memphis Drum Shop.

Great review! I bought my Peavey's after seeing Bobby Rock at a drum clinic in 1994. I've got the same kit as you and still love them. I've owned several kits since then but can't replicate the way these drums resonate. The "bridge system" they used to keep the lugs off the shells was simply a game changer. I've got a double bass kit with 2 racks and 2 floors. To this day, I use other kits live but still use my Peavey's in the studio. Love these drums 💯

I remember the first time I saw these back in the early to mid 90’s. I was turned off by their appearance. But the guys in the store asked me to play them. I still remember the sound of that bass drum. They whole kit was amazing. I bought a set of Tama starclassic about a month before I discovered these strange looking drums The starclassics have served me well and still get a lot of action. Technically, this is NOT a Radial Pro 1000 kit. It's a Peavey RBS-1 (Radial Bridge System) kit, which predates the RP-1000s. The most noticeable differences being the RBS-1's screw on black metal badges (as opposed to the RP-1000 stick on badges), and the bridges are made from laminated layers of wood veneers (as opposed to the RP-1000 bridges made with a "butcher block" construction). Both sound GREAT!

I played several of these kits when they came out, and still own a Radial Pro Snare Drum. These drums sounded truly great. Peavey was just distributing them and I believe licensing them, though I'm not sure about the licensing part. The guy that designed them had the last name Volpp? if I remember correctly. I met him at NAMM and used to have his business card. He was really serious about the concept of thin maple shells with no interference impeding the drum's natural resonance. From memory I played on 3 different kits and they all sounded fantastic. Sadly the concept didn't win more people over, I believe it was mostly because of the polarizing aesthetic, which I personally liked and thought looked cool, but many did not. They did sound fantastic though. My snare will rip your head off. My guitarist at the time used to comment on how powerful it was when we would rehearse. Great drum sounds.

I know I was in a band when these came out and I showed our drummer one of the brochures and he just made a face when he saw them and was like, "Nah". I think you are right, the look kind of turned people off which is sad because they do have a great sound.

That's fine. I get blamed for this sort of thing all the time. Hope you win them.
@jwnrocks5 ай бұрын
@@rickdiorAs I research these more, I saw one review where they say not to use them outdoors because there’s no vents, and they will have issues with heat. Not a factor for me, but that’s another reason to consider them primarily for studio use besides the issues you raised.
@jwnrocks5 ай бұрын
I won the auction for the 6pc Radial Pro 1000 set I was tracking! You’re in the clear regarding “blame” since my wife took the news pretty well. When she asked where I’m gonna put ‘em, and I said right next to my Slingerlands, she actually liked that idea. Makes me suspicious on what leverage will be applied for a purchase she has in mind, but that’s okay. Picking ‘em up in a couple weeks. Any rack mount brand, and style suggestions? Obviously heavy duty. I think I’d rather go with separate tripods vs. a stationary rack, but I don’t have experience with either. The tripod seems more flexible except for maybe competing with cymbal stands.

I have never seen, heard or played these personally, but I do remember when they first came out and the guy at one of our local music stores gave me a sales brochure of them. I had the same reaction like "what the hell are those? ". Lol they didn't have any in the store, but he told me he had got to play on some and how incredible they sounded, then he told me the price. Between the looks and the price, the sound no longer mattered. Lol if I had that much money and could have heard them for myself, I may have gotten over the spacey design, but that price point was definitely not in my budget back then. Plus I never saw them in any of the music shops, even the ones that carried Peavey, which kind of made me wonder if they were so great, why didn't any of them have a demo kit in their stores. I was curious to want to try them out or at least hear someone else who played them. They do sound nice. I'm sure they sound even better in person than on my phone. I love your style of playing, by the way. Very solid, yet relaxed. You make it look effortless while sounding like a monster drummer.

Fantastic video, Rick. These drums sound monstrous enough with Pinstripes. Imagine the boom with Clear Ambassadors top and bottom. I vividly remember playing them at PASIC '95 and being utterly blown out of my chair by how amazing they sounded. (After which, Bobby Rock came into the room, sat down, and destroyed them!) If I had the money right now, I would buy one of these kits without so much as a second's thought.
