Why do you use a wheelchair: I have arthritis of the spine that makes walking beyond half a kilometer very painful and difficult. I get funny looks when I walk to the chair, but I’m getting more used to that! Are you a part-time or full-time user: I am a part-time user. What’s the make and model of your chair: I have a Quickie argon 2 Do you have just one chair? Yes, just the one BUT I have many extras which effectively gives me 5 chairs. So I have the argon 2 as built, I have a freewheel and all terrain wheels which gives me a ‘different’ chair, I have a front electric wheel which changes it again and I have the new triride rear powered wheels which work with the front wheel as a 3x3 system, seriously there is nowhere this thing can’t go, as well as working with a joystick as a power chair with no additional front wheel. So one chair that can transform into 5 chairs. It is electric or manual? It is both! What cushion do you use? I use a Jay easy Visco because it is supportive but as a part time user I don’t need anything better. What’s your dream wheelchair: I think I have it. I have a chair for every need! When I am out and about at horse shows - I manage an equestrian team - I have a chair that copes with everything. When I am in the supermarket the argon 2 is fine on its own. When I’m out getting exercise the freewheel is great and on the occasions when I am all ceased up and can’t use a manual chair I can use the joystick. So it really is a dream kit. What’s your favorite or most useful skill you have learned? Not being afraid to ask for what I need. What skill/trick do you wish you could do but can’t? A wheelie, I would really like to be able to balance in a wheelie. What’s the best thing about being in a wheelchair? I am able to meander! Before I would be in so much pain that I would just want to go home but now I have the freedom to take my time because the chair helps me manage my pain. What’s the worst thing about being in a wheelchair? Feeling that you’re always making life difficult for the rest of the family. That the trip out or restaurant dinner would be less troublesome without the chair. Dream wheelchair accessory? Well I have so many already! At this point a basket for my triride! Weirdest/stupidest question you have been asked as a wheelchair user … so far I haven’t been asked a really dumb question. Hard to believe isn’t it?! What would I advise someone choosing a new wheelchair? Don’t rush it, don’t expect your first one to be right as you will learn a lot. What looks like a saving isn’t.

I found out last year, having the person who is fitting you for your chair also being a wheelchair user is an absolute requirement. I was "fitted" for a new "custom" chair last year and yes it is MUCH better than the hospital type chair I was in for 8 years, but I've met so may wheelchair users who are also occupational therapists and other professionals who do wheelchair fittings tell me this current chair is totally not the proper chair for me. I still can't pop a wheelie in this chair it's too difficult

Dear Gem, You are an inspiration and a great coach. In March 2023 at 60, I had a sudden transverse mielytis attack at T6 and became very limited, permanently. I can stand up and walk very little, and by doing so my energy lasts little. The effort increases the permanent neuropathic pains so I opted for a wheelchair. Firstly I had a ligjtweight power mobility scooter that I could load a and unload by myself from my car but it failed soon. Then I got a Ki Mobility Rogue manual rigid chair, which is great. I have mastered the wheelies and precise steering in tight or crowded spaces. Your videos and enthusiasm, as well as the support from my wife and family and colleagues have been invaluable. Greetings from Chile.

I use a wheelchair because I have a nerve condition that causes balance problems, orthostatic intolerance, and early muscle fatigue. I am a part time user. I use a Quickie 2 manual folding chair. I only have the one chair, but I would LOVE to have my own sports chair in the future. I have a modified Jay GO cushion (extra foam was added due to my asymmetries). My dream chair is a rigid frame Hands on Concepts chair due to the ultra-lightweight design and full customization. I agree that popping a wheelie is the most useful skill I have learned, but I don't have enough control yet to hold it going down hill or off a ledge (I have to go backwards down ledges), so that would be what I'd most wish to learn. The best thing about being in a chair is the freedom and being able to go on walks and paved hikes outside again. The worst thing is of course access. My dream accessory is some kind of power assist. The most annoying question is how often I'm asked how I was injured. 1) I wasn't injured- I have a variety of progressive conditions that I've had most of or all my life, and 2) if I HAD been injured, I certainly wouldn't want to have to relive it over and over in front of curious strangers. The best advice I got when choosing my chair was to go not for the chair that appealed to me right now but the chair that I could imagine best serving my needs for the next 5-10 years.

Hello Gem. I just had headlights fitted to my powerchair; and I was surprised when I got the chair back to see the front headlights sticking out from the side of the powerchair. I had assumed they would be sunk into the frame. I don't advocate well for myself and I said nothing. Now one of the headlights is broken, and I felt so angry because this is not what I wanted. Unfortunately, I don't have anyone to be with me. I shall phone my mobility company again tomorrow and hopefully we can move forward with this.

I have a Fold & Go folding power wheelchair. I’m a part time user and use it mostly where I’d have to do a lot of walking. Places like flea markets and botanical gardens are where you’ll see me in a chair. I use a wheelchair and also use a scooter because I had two knee replacements on my left knee. The partial I had done first failed and did a tremendous amount of damage to the end of the of thigh and shin bones). The full revision helped with some of the damage, but not all. I am unable to fully extend my leg to make my knee completely straight. This causes me to limp a little on good days and a lot on bad days. I try to keep myself walking as much as possible and for the most part I can. I don’t use my wheelchair at work as I can walk the distances I need to. But sometimes I wish I had my wheelchair to make it slightly less painful. The thing I like about being a wheelchair user is that getting through airport security is a bit faster and I can board the plane first. The worst part is that it reminds me that I’m not pain free and it could possibly have been avoided if the first surgeon had listened to me about the pain I was feeling and had taken some X-rays. Maybe he could have gone back in sooner and fixed the cement that came loose. Instead he treated me like I was a drug addict that just wanted pain meds. I was not nor have I ever been addicted to any drug ever. But on the flip side I NEEDED the pain meds because the stupid device was broken and hurt like hell every time I moved. And I’m not sure who made up the policy about having to wait a year to get second opinion on what was going on with knee post op. It took the new doctor 15 minutes to perform the X-rays and five seconds to just glance at the new X-rays and see and say look, the cement came loose on the prosthetic and has been flopping around like a dying fish for a year or so. No wonder you were in pain. Bad news is, the damage is too great to just fix the partial. It will have to be a full knee replacement. After that I felt so many emotions. Relief I wasn’t going crazy and the pain had a real cause, fury at the first surgeon for not listening to me and try to find out what the root cause of the pain was and not just keep pushing narcotics at me. Stressed and very upset that I’d have to go through this hard surgery AGAIN! I remember all I went through the first time and I was not looking forward to sleepless nights and pain for another year. This is why I use a chair or a scooter. But I don’t let it stop me from doing things I enjoy and can still do. I ride my 150cc scooter and my eBike. The chair gives me the freedom to go to flea markets and enjoy them instead of sitting at home feeling sorry for myself. I just wish the chronic pain wasn’t there all the time.

I am a part time wheelchair user. Until now I've been selfunding. I got my current wheelchair at the same time as I got the Batec. Unfortunately the Batec and I have never got along. It's underpowered for the hills around here. The wheelchair is wonderfully stable and has an adjustable back which really helps my pain. I've added a headrest but the angles aren't very comfortable. I've been assessed by wheelchair services and will be getting both a manual chair and a powerchair since I'm too weak to push myself Unfortunately the house needs adaptation before the new chairs will be issued. The new chairs will have the ability to let me have my legs elevated which will help with the lymphedema. The worst thing about using a wheelchair is the whole accessibility issue. There's only one of the numerous cafes in our tourist town that's actually more or less accessible and that's seasonal. The worst people are bad mannered tourists who deliberately walk in front of me to block my progress. The absolute WORST thing someone did was use my laprug to wipe dogmuck off their shoes. I screamed and they said something like "better on you than me!!!" Unfortunately for them, the local window cleaner "accidentally" sprayed them with his pressure hose. Then he cleaned my blanket. His fury made me feel a LOT less helpless

Hi Gem, I watched your vlog earlier and just wanted to say thank you, I myself am an ambulatory wheelchair user because of the housing I live in, so to get from room to room as the door ways are to small for my chair I have to use sticks, so can imagine I stay in my armchair most of the day and only use my wheelchair when I go outdoors, it is woltwurnus wx5, which I had built for me, and frankly I hate it, the worst 7k I've ever spent, I am larger person and it is so heavy that I can never in the month of Sundays pull a wheelie, and I am sat so bolt upright it is a nightmare to propel properly,

Been a wheelchair user for 7 years now (i'm 23). Taught myself to do the wheelie and going down stairs (front way) before i went to Seoul on exchange 1) because i had no idea what the terrain was gonna look like in Seoul. 2) I'm 'backpacking' around Asia for 5 months after the semester ends so it seemed useful. It is so freeing knowing that you can do it on your own - even if you allow people to help you or go around once in a while if you're tired or hurting. Also i love just popping wheelies whenever I'm sitting around, waiting for someone or something and what not - it alleviates my back pain so that's awesome

love your videos gem! warning to anyone thinking of getting an efix or e-motion ive been waiting since last august for my wheelchair, finally my chair got to the dealership but having isues with alber supplying the ordered efix. first they werent manurfacturing them (which they hadnt informed my dealership bofore or after they took the order. finally at the beginning of may my efix wheels battery and joystick arrived at the dealership only for it to be the wrong fixing so it cant be put onto my chair. my rep checked that it wasnt an error on the dealerships end it was the manufacturers fault. weve been waiting for them to ship the fixing part for 3 WEEKS. i was meant to be able to pick it up this week (a great birthday present for me its my birthday today) but we got an email saying once again the manufacturers had let us down (the rep is lovly and worked so hard chasing things for us and didnt realise it was my birthday) i just want to be able to have a life again, i have pots and eds, today i went out to light lunch with my mum and boyfriend then mum and i went to buy some shoes (both places able to park close so not much of walking needed but its knakered me and really struggled. i cant do one of my hobbies or walk my dogs. its so frustrating as it feels like running a marathon but the finish line keeps getting moved.

i would say ... go with your head not your heart.... when choosing a chair. So easy to look "oh its pink" yehhhh. No people. Please take your time before signing that order. im on my second chair. Disablilty changed so a change needed. The closest to me to buy a chair is 3 hours away. But its one of the top places to go and i know the people there due to being part of their set up.. Not sure if im supposed to leave names out here... Anyway. I was guided through. A whole afternoon booked just for me. The first chair i sat in was same make as i had but different design. Solid good quality. So we went from there. Lots of cussion changes and do or dont have push handles. opteed for handles as very tiny clip down ones you wouldnt know there on low back. Just for those little push moments. My biggest downfall was the breaks. Be very carful here. They worked fantastic in showroom .... BUT.. new ones stiff and adjustments just not working. Only a little lip at the end to relece with your finger tip. How did i not see that . But i had same ones sent free which had the longer handle on. Brilliant. My other gripe. The colour in the book isnt always the colour they arrive as. Same with last chair. Their idea of pink was plumb to me. But i liked it and true to the british upper lip, i kept quiet. Why do they give flowery names then pink. when in fact they are purple. Fortuatly id just coloured my hair Purple around fringe area and it matches. LOL... But this could have been a very costly mistake. These paints are added on order. Not just off the shelf. A hard argument to challenge. So check the colour and not the name. I was very fit upper body befor finaly having amputation. I didnt realise my whole body would change how it worked. Ive lost my confidence in wheelies so have an anty tip put on. Adjustable. (not). Yes you can adjust it but the main company hasnt set it mid way. but with only one hole left to raise it. So many curbs i cant get up unless i flick the bar up. so thats pointless. It also has to be down to use the SMOOVE as in the way to fit it on. Which defeats the help both should give. May have to take it off. Thats £150 down the drain. So please. check out this chanel. write a list before leaving the home....... in fact phone the company first to arrange a booking. Some have items on site but are off the shelf.... noooo.... and are still same price. Even with these hickups, ive a chair that is sooo comfy. Light weight and now ive put my own mark on it going with the purple theme, im very happy. This will be my final chair. Im in my 60's. All parts can be replaced and adjusted. I hope..... I'm actually getting some new mods for my wheelchair on Wednesday that will hopefully help my back and neck not get so tight when sitting in my chair for prolonged periods. It's still very possible that I will have to order bigger casters to get the proper seat slope for me - my current ones are 5", and from testing it out by raising them on books, it's looking like I will need 8" ones(!), just so that I can sit up straight without having to either press myself into my backrest or use a significant posterior pelvic tilt, both of which make my back and neck really tight, which can cause migraines. I'll be able to test them out Wednesday night, so I'll know right away whether they'll work or not. Casters, if needed, will have to wait another week or two.

Hi Gem, are the wheels on your new chair spinergy's, too? If so which model and why have you choosen different ones? I would like to get some in the future. Thanks for your videos, I've learned so much - waiting for my first chair as a part time user due to POTS and ME/CFS. My needs are a little bit different in comparison to people with spinal cord injury. My dreamchair is a rigid frame from O4 Wheelchairs (a German-Netherland-Brand) because they have a seating system which you can move (backrest and seat) while sitting in the chair. This will help me with my POTS. I also will get high legrests and I need electrical support (Alber Emotion because of muscle weakness). Hoping my insurance will say it's okay.... My dreamdreamchair would be a sporty, slim, elegant Küschall or Wolturnus.... But not for my needs, sadly. Comment from my GP as I asked for prescription: "Don't make you more ill, as you are". I was speachless and began to cry - because the process to decide to need and accept a wheelchair took years at this point and was SO hard. Luckily I was in Rehab at this time and the doctor there saw my struggels and supported me.

Gem, can I just ask why you no longer have height adjustable push handles? I know you always used to recommend those, have you changed your opinion on them?

I know. My comment was for those who think that only persons with a sci or paralysis use wheelchairs. As someone with ms I started using a wheelchair 8 yrs ago when my legs became too weak and my balance was affected to the point that I could no longer walk without falling. I've been accused of being lazy or faking my disability when I stand up. Ignoring the fact that I'm holding onto something on the occasions that I stand.

The pings at the beginning (i really hope it's just the beginning) when things pop up on screen, hurt my ears and brain.. when the sound is low enough that they don't it's hard to understand what you are saying. Not angry about it, just saying because i assume that's not the point of the pings ❤

It totally makes sense that you felt so uncomfortable being assumed to have cancer just because you were in a wheelchair and collecting donations... That said, I also think it makes sense for people to assume that someone collecting for a cause could be personally attached to that cause. Obviously that doesn't make it in any way okay for people to comment on that assumption! But if I were met by someone collecting for a charity, I think I would also potentially be thinking that they were collecting because they were affected by the thing they're collecting money to support (unless it was somehow made clear that it was a larger cause that they just happened to be supporting because they worked for the company or whatever?)... Again not trying to excuse anyone being rude to you, just trying to offer a different perspective on why people might have assumed that you collecting money for cancer research were personally impacted by cancer?.
