Thank you for the comments everyone, I really appreciate the kind words, and I'm super happy so many of you enjoyed the video. EDIT: I updated the source doc with a few more links I've found since publishing the video, and I will keep updating it if I find anything else that's relevant.

I've finally finished the video - I wanted to express some real heartfelt thanks for creating it. This is clearly a work of passion for you, and the dedication and care to which you created this video has made it a fantastic watch. I'm glad someone has finally given Pentiment the longform treatment it deserves. Bravo, thank you so much for creating this

As a history teacher that fell head over heels for this game, your analysis was nothing short than art. It's something i would present as my final college project for sure! I can only hope that the algorithm helps you and you make even more essays of historical games. Thank you for this video friend. All the best to you!

3:36:17 fun fact: SPOILER - - - - - - - - - - - - If you sneaked in the abbey library as Andreas in the first chapter, and you read the records of the sisters, in the Latin text of the entry for sister Gertrude it say that she "speaks only little Latin". This part is not translated for you unfortunately through the eyes of Andreas, but it's a nice easter egg I guess.

Just wanted to echo the other comments and express how grateful I am for this incredible deep dive on such an amazing game. Just finished playing this past christmas and was lucky enough to be recommend this video. It's the kind of multiple hour long, self-indulgent(affectionate), extensive analysis I was craving for after finishing the game. It's heartfelt, and honest, and personal, and funny and unbelievably insightful and arghhh just the amount of work and research that went into this passion project, I love it, I absolutely love it. I'll be coming back to this video again and again. Especially loved the bits where you included live footage from your travels, and the parts where you argue that the game works because of its limitations and not in spite of them (like the decision to cut out voice acting and focusing on doing something special with the lettering instead for example). I couldn't have put it better myself, I wholeheartedly agree *kissing your hand gratefully* thank you for putting this beautiful work together, it's as much a piece of art as the game itself.

I’m going through a rough time right now and have felt too unmotivated to do anything, and I sat through this entire video over the course of a couple days. This is incredibly researched, amazingly analyzed and is exactly the kind of Pentiment deep dive commentary i was looking for. Thank you for unintentionally making my grief pass by a little quicker, and for making such an inspiring piece of work that is this video!!

This was such an amazing video! finding long videos about games i love with smaller fanbases is always so exciting for me haha and you definitely did it justice :) also the most important roleplaying choices in pentiment are obviously what order to eat the foods in during meals. any andreas that eats almonds first is a monster and must be stopped.

Thank you so much for this video! I've never come across such an in-depth and profoundly researched video on a video game, and, like you, I also felt that this game was made perfectly for me! I'm from England and my dad is a priest in the Anglican church, and we live in the grounds of an ancient monastery which was turned into a cathedral during the Reformation. Many parts of the old abbey now lie in ruins, so the discussion of religion and time and past conflicts feeding into modern life really hit home for me. I would go on and on (I am also an artist and relate to Andreas in many ways) but for now, thank you so much for this, Pentiment is such an important and beautiful game and I just wanted to convey something of my love for it here!

I finally got to watch this behemoth of a video, great work. I know how much effort goes into something like this, you have my sympathies! One thing I really liked, and I'm not sure you mentioned it [or you did and I forgot, lots of information to take] is that the first time you meet Lucky the stonemason and Father Thomas, they're at the church and discuss some necessary repairs. Lucky mentions that the foundation is collapsing and the church risks breaking apart in the future and requests to be allowed to consolidate it. Father Thomas attempts to find excuses in refusing him, and tells him something like "it's fine, don't worry about it". At the end of the game we fully well know why Thomas was reluctant. Pretty poetic that the first and last time you see the Father, it's connected to the foundation of Tassing's church. It also makes me think that there's no way the secret can be realistically kept, because when the church is rebuilt, they 100% have to dig out the collapsed church and seeing the ruins below would be innevitable.

Sorry if I spam your comment section, but with a video so long, there is so much to comment on! In terms of the soundscape: I was surprised at how emotionally I reacted to the few times you actually hear music. It really hits a lot harder. It helps that the music is appropriately somber and in the style of the time. But the lack of music throughout the rest of the game also in a way heightens immersion, like you said. It underlines the atmospheric sounds to where you can almost feel the environment in an ASMR-kind of way.

Great video! Something I noticed very early is that the purple font (writing) of the notes was the same as the one in the book that tells our story. So I thought for most of the game that the person telling our story and plotting the murders was the same one. I also was kind of bummed that I never said I would leave Tassing as Magdalene and had her ready to marry Otz, but the game gave 0 choice on that front. Overall great game tho. Great athmosphere, great music, great writing and great story!

I have a question for you. I played this game when it first came out. I’m doing a second play through now. I noticed the shield of Nuremberg doesn’t change anymore when picking backgrounds /on where you studied ,and it’s separate now. Was it always like this ? Or am I imagining it? Thanks.
@domicreah
@domicreah 11 ай бұрын
I think it was always like this, I also checked my footage and couldn't find anywhere where it was not separate. The Low Countries shield is very similar to the Nuremberg one, so maybe that's why you remember it being one thing? But honestly I'm not 100% sure, and someone else might remember it more precisely.

so spoilers for what I was thinking of there . . . . . . . . . . . . . . yeah it was the sopranos, I really didn't like that ending. I understand it as an artistic/writing choice and that way I even think it's a cool idea. but as a viewer it just felt so unsatisfying
@thesummerofmark
@thesummerofmark 4 ай бұрын
@@domicreah i think the main thing that makes that ending work is that tony was fucked either way. People like him end up either in prison or at the bottom of a lake. So it’s better to let the viewer imagine their own ending. I really recommend The Sopranos Autopsy blog for in-depth analysis of the show. Anyway, great video man!

Hey, not sure if you know about this, because I haven't seen anyone else talking about it, but you can actually know who the killers are beyond a shadow of a doubt. For instance take the baron's murder: There are four suspects with equal chances of having commited the crime, right? No. For starters Ottilia cannot read, so she couldnt even know the baron was going to be there. Now we have three suspect with the same likelihood of having done it, right? Once again, no. These explanations require a little more sophistication, though. Let's take Matilda: she murdered the baron with a shovel. But that's impossible. Starting with the more tangential evidence, she is very helpful from the get go, and she has great fear of the baron. That does not mean anything necessarily, but if you take a look at the material evidence, the baron died from his head being bludgeoned, but a shovel used in such a way would pierce the skull of the of baron. That paired with the fact she didn't even try to hide the shovel and the reason she gives for it being stained with blood (killing a rabbit) is corroborated by one the sisters, before the murder even took place, saying she has the habit of killing cats and rabbits, makes her completely unable to have comitted the murder. Now we two suspects with equal motive, means and alibi, right? Still not true. Ferenc is a tough one, but it is really clear it's not him if you know what you're looking for. The baron asked him to perform a ritual, because he knew that the Prior had knowledge about that, as evidenced by Smokey and his friend telling you about seeing him perform a ritual in the woods, not that long ago, might I add. The motive would be that he wants to get rid of the baron because he wants to keep himself and the Abbey safe, but that doesn't make any sense. He knew killing the baron would only bring more scrutiny upon the Abbey, and certify the demise of the scriptorium. So what he did was simply hide the materials used to perform the ritual in the grave. A bat and a knife? Sure. But why would he hide a plate as well? And that gets us to the one and only possible culprit: Lucky. You might think this is reaching, but, I have actually been hiding the smoking gun piece of evidence all this. One thing that rules out all others. If you'll notice, on the left side of the Abbey there is a bloodstain on the wall very far from the body. Why does that matter? Well, you couldn't get that bloodstain on that very specific part of the wall by hitting the back of their head, therefore, the murder weapons don't work. The only one that curiously has no murder weapon to be found is Lucky. And how did he kill the baron? That is very subtly hinted at when tailing Lucky, when you can see him bashing the head of a fish on a rock, which is precisely what he did to baron. And that's why it could only have been Lucky. After having realized this I just fell in love with the game, because it is very rewarding and satisfactory to those who are paying full attention, and it tells you you're right only this very subtle way. It's a shame a lot of people seem to think there's no real solution, when it is revealed in a very, very sophisticated way. Almost makes you feel like a real detective.
