The little line lockers are a nice idea. I suggest that you glue a short length of rope to the lid, and to somewhere inside the locker, so that the lids won't end up floating away in the middle of the ocean some day...

3rd’d! Magnets would be a great addition to all the hatch lids / locker lids in the cockpit just for added safety of not leaving a gaping hole if the lid flies off.. easy to hide / inset to give that clean look

Here is a little trick I've seen another sailing channel do... When your lines get salty and need to be cleaned, you can put a plug in the drain hole and add water and soap to the locker to clean the lines. 😇😉You're very welcome!

Great idea! Might want to consider adding a grate/drying rack inside the storage to facilitate drainage, to allow air ventilation around wet lines and to prevent the lines from clogging the drain holes! Could use cheap PVC piping from HD to build the grate!

how refreshing to find folk who love sanding, most people will avoid it where they can, its a love hate relationship with me, but when its something for me, it has to be right, and worth the sanding to get the best finish

Wonderful little addition to the cockpit, some sort of tether on those lids will be a must, maybe a short piece of shock cord that would actually hold the lid down. I’m sure Matt will dry the lines out before they are stowed for any period of time 👍

Very cool lockers. I have visions of them sailing off on their own adventures in rough seas. Perhaps a tether? Or maybe strong neodinium magnets in those corner G10 brackets? Well done getting help sanding. That is such a monumental job and key to the look of the boat when you're all done. After all that work it's worth it to get it perfect.(EDIT: I shoulda read the comments before commenting, 149 people beat me to it.)

With your line hatch you need to put a loose cord that allows you to remove the hatch cover but will prevent it from being lost overboard if it is dislodged accidentally or by aware or if the lines are pulled out quickly. The cord could be attached inside the locker and the underside of the hatch.
@frannappe2719Ай бұрын
maybe later you can attach a little paracord line to the lid, so it doesnt get lost / washed down / flown away. And can even be stored away in the same locker diagonaly if needed.

That funky, groovy tune that was playing while Matt was glassing the hatches and lids reminded me of something one might have heard on a 1970's, big city, cop/detective tv series. Right on, jive turkey!
@leonplyАй бұрын
It is always satisfying to see professionals applying fairing compound, as they use enough to actually end with a quick, smooth and fair result, without taking weeks or months in a misguided attempt to "save weight." Speed and accuracy wins out every time, and actually ends up costing far less and doesn't add much weight in the long run.
@matthewcampbell7153Ай бұрын
Hi Matt... those line-lockers might benefit from a couple of magnets to hold them in place. Sometimes strong winds or typhoons can suck them into the air and away.... Just an idea.... Great work...

Not a bad idea. Suggest you put some kind of attachement on the lids to keep them from being knocked or blow over board. Maybe a line that is attached inside the locker and comes throughthe grab hole with a big knot. don't forget to epoxy the drain holes.

Great idea. Put a tether on the underside of those hatches! That close to the aft of an open transom they could easily go over. Drops, a hard knock when heeled, or a 3 year old Matt wanting to see if it floats and you will need another one. Or make a spare lid with scrap now while you’re doing glass work and stick it in the locker. Future reference, round lids can’t fall into the hole, no tabs needed.
@Tomm9yАй бұрын
I hadn't thought of the skill required to apply just enough fairing compound of the best consistency and mix, then to apply it neatly, so you use the least material and time to achieve the finish. Thank you for that snippet, one of many occupations that seems just like hard work, and it is hard work, but the skills are most significant, good to hear it is fulfilling too. It's nearly 20 years since my little boat was last repainted beautifully and it reminds me to care well for the rest or her. Sure its a small thing, but looking after a boat well is many sided.

It’s not the easiest way to cut a hole for a hatch/ lid, but a small angle of lets say five degrees going inwards cut with the saw blade, gives you a great hatch/ lid that doesn’t fall through the hole without having to glue in an edge or corners. There are many ways to make an efficient hatch/ lid, but as a thing of beauty I prefer the ones with an inward angle. I just like the simplicity of it and its shape has something that design wise appeals to me, simple but effective. The boat starts to look good, I’m curious at the keel design and when the time will be there for the keel to get attached.

5,111th tag-along looky-loo view about to set sail... 3:11 - TBH, to the phantom shipmate, cutting that many large holes in the deck sure LOOKS like a compromise of the strength and durability for an ocean-going vessel that'll take lots of pounding and abuse. But hey, you know what you're doing; right? 12:00 - but the stow-away of lines, keeping 'messy stuff' helps any OCD-types who like things 'ship-shape', clean and orderly.
