It took me days after watching this video to realize something: Tavros can just commune Jack to cut his own arm off thanks to his Bec as well as Jasper parts and they have that problem solved. Even then, knowing how Homestuck is just make it so Vriska has that idea and does the x2 commune to Tavros to give Jack that command. Jack doesn't even do anything really important after Act 5, so you can be rid of him by them. I'm giving permission to any fanfic writer to use this idea.
@Isuream63313 ай бұрын
The only problem I have with this is that PM taking down Jack with the white ring is immensely satisfying, for me at least. Personally, I would have had the big fight between Jack and PM be at the end of act 5, for the same reason here. I’m not sure how it would be presented alongside Cascade, but at least this way Jack isn’t just left as a loose end.

I really enjoy this video. Something that annoys me in a lot of Homestuck analysis on youtube is that a lot of them are more about the fandom and culture that surrounded the comic than they are about the comic itself, the actual story often goes undiscussed in favor of talking about troll cosplayers and tumblr, so I appreciate a video that's actually about the comic.

It's a testament to how good the first few acts are that people rarely disagree that they're good, or more importantly, why they're good. Some people don't like acts 1-3 (these people are wrong) but especially for 4 and 5, everyone agrees more or less why and how the comic succeeds and is satisfying. And where there are disagreements on what people prefer, it's not a big deal because different elements are balanced incredibly well. Act 6, on the other hand, while widely less popular, ranges in peoples' perceptions. I for one really like most of act 6. But what I find interesting is just how different people's opinions are on it, based on what they value. I found myself vehemently disagreeing with almost every take you had on act 6. The positive stuff, especially openbound, I felt you praised far too highly for a stretch of story which drags more than perhaps any other, but you also criticised what in my mind is some of the most compelling and interesting or hilarious moments in the whole comic, especially dismissing some of the early act 6 intermissions, which I usually find most people find hilarious, e.g. penis ouija. Comparing the quiet act with John, Roxy, and Terezi post GO to the doc scratch stuff at the end of act 5 was a really weird choice. The doc scratch segment is anything but quiet and reflective and sad. It's packed with so many things to keep track of, and feels like it's really building up to a climactic moment. When John, Roxy and Terezi are talking about the loss and impact of game over, it's drawn out because as much as it's building to the retcon, it's also an incredibly personal and vulnerable moment reflecting on the sheer impact of what just happened that warrants not being glossed over. Tonally those two stretches of the story couldn't be more different. Anyway, I'm not going to list every disagreement because I'd be here all day. It's undeniable that act 6 drags to hell and back and is incredibly bloated, and there's a lot I agreed with too, like the issues with Aranea and HIC, and how a lot of characters like Rose lost their edge. Act 6 is a complicated subject to say the least.

I have some critiques for this review. In the first half of the review you say very little *about* Homestuck, instead you just summarize the events of the first few acts. Also, the review would make absolutely no sense to anyone who hasnt already read Homestuck, you spoil all of the main story beats rotten, but you also tip-toe around a few twists or surprises in the comic (such as when Caliborn asks Dirk to draw him 'smut' but it ends up just being people holding hands and eating cake). This obviously doesnt make any sense and I think the whole video would have been smoother if you just didnt entertain any mystery surrounding the twists that anyone who makes it even halfway through the video would already know. That being said, there were some great and interesting points you bring up throughout the review that I had never thought of, such as how you never once question how the beta kids are friends, but the alpha kids friendship is pretty unbelievable once you subject it to any scrutiny. Some of your points made no sense to me though, like how you said that there was too much dialogue surrounding some characters/events at the end of act six for you to get invested in them??? Overall I think that this review would have been a lot better if you only talked about elements of the story that you had something interesting to say on, which would have also cut down the length of the video a lot. I do applaud your efforts though, this is the best summary of Homestuck that Im aware of.

Great review however holy guacamole I believe you and I read different comics if that's how you read Dirk my lord what happened here?? Dirk is easily the most insecure and tormented character of the whole comic along with Dave and Terezi. Dunno how managed to miss the point so hard on THAT one! A lot of readers who loved the beta kids just unfairly conditioned themselves to dislike the alpha kids from the get go though, so perhaps this contributed to it. Jake is incredibly infuriating, but he's also one of the better written characters- negatively speaking. He's a walking failure and tragedy of a character relative to his Page class. A character being pretty bad as a person doesn't really make them badly written, if Vriska is proof of anything.

I understand you're only doing this for this very specific video, but I personally don't like listening to things in the background. I get too distracted. It is nice, but sitting down and giving something all of my attention is more engaging for me. I'm not into Homestuck at all, but learning about the series can get me invested. I've done this with Call of Duty Zombies, Sonic the Hedgehog, Dragon Ball, etc. I don't mind spoilers because I know nothing about the series outside of it being very popular, and by the time I reach the moments that were spoiled, I've already forgotten. I'll definitely come back should I get into Homestuck. Nice video, I love when videos are hours long.

Great video, though I have to say I disagree with your opinion that the volume of text is a weakness. The best part of Homestuck to me has always been the relationships between the characters and their conversations have always shown that better than anything. Also I like Jake based solely on his loud exclamations when he goes full hope bubble. Edit from later in the video: I really don't agree with a lot of your views on 6-5 and 6-6. The drama in 6-5 is overblown yes, but I've always viewed that as intentional. 6-6 is amazing in my opinion, mainly because Caliborn's segments are comedic brilliance. I mean, his mental breakdown after John beats him up is just amazing. I've always viewed Homestuck as a story about how we interact with and experience stories. It definitely has its problems, but I certainly don't think they're as bad as you make them out to be. I do agree that The Condesce is underdeveloped though. 9/10 video, would read all of Homestuck again.

I’m loving the video, but I gotta disagree on the Classpect stuff. First off, they are meant to be vague. Because what they represent, both Classes and Aspects, are vague. Ok, let’s use an example... So, an Aspect is a part of the world of Homestuck. Time, Space, Ect. A class is how a character uses that aspect, or how they will interact with it. Let’s use mine, the Knight. Funnily enough, I have the same Classpect as Dave, so we can use Knight of Time as our reference. First, what does time mean? Well, we see it associated with music, entropy, time, death, and a few other things. Now, as a Knight, Dave “Serves” his aspect. Let’s see... he keeps dead things in amber, serving them to last longer then they should. He makes music to give to his friends. He literally jumps through them to save their asses. And he does all this at big costs. He could die very easily. There are other examples. Like John, who is the Heir of breath. We learn from Rose that an Heirs Journey is that of Matchurity, and we see John is very focused on Magic, with his Windy Thing. He literally BECOMES wind. So we can see an Heir as something who “enheirets or becomes their aspect.” Let’s see Equius. Everything he touches, he breaks, rendering it null and void. As he is the Heir of Void. After he dies, his blood is used to blot out parts of a certain characters book, obvuscating and voiding it out. Or how about Mituna? He uses his powers to stop a horrible threat. In this, he enheirits pain, suffering, and just plain... being doomed. As he is the Heir of doom. I hope you kinda get it. Optimistic Duelist makes some AMAZING videos and essays on the subject, so I advice going to him if you are confused. ^^
@arklypurple99 Жыл бұрын

@@curlystepper7386 voxus is actually a really nice way to experience homestuck if you hate reading THAT much. the unofficial homestuck collection is the absolute perfect way if you ask me though. also you posted your reply twice lol

Yeah no. There is no "unimportant fluff", it's part of the writing style in Homestuck. You basically said to watch Homestuck Abridged if you just want everything digested for you in spoilers without the feeling of an actual narrative. Voxus' Let's Read is the way to go.

While we're recommending Voxus, I also want to add on their Let's Read of Ruby's Quest!

This is probably the closest I'll ever get to reading Homestuck 1:42:11 hey isn't there a character like that in Psychonauts just way better because it's not in text form So, in conclusion, read Homestuck how Jelloapocalyps advised you to watch RWBY: read the first 5 acts and have someone else tell you about the rest. The difference is that someone else will struggle to explain Act 6 so you can laugh at their suffering.
@deuce55462 жыл бұрын
If you don't want to read Act 6 then don't read Homestuck at all, tbh. Act 6 is half the comic's length and like it or not contains the conclusion of everything the comic builds up to, as satisfying as Cascade was it isn't definitive enough for a reader.

Hey, I've been working on it since last summer. It's not like I did it all at once.

I appreciate the effort you put into it but I just can't follow anything you are saying, there are way to many names and without visuals I just can't keep strait who's who

Well, thank you for giving me this video so I can understand Homestuck without having to read 8000+ pages. Finally I can understand and become one with the internet.

Why did I do this to myself (I feel so lucky I never read the comic)
