A Very Unprofessional Tour of Desert Plants in My Garden | PART 1

Correction: I forgot to add the variety to Tom's scientific name. He is a Lophocereus schottii var. monstrose.
Tom the Totem Pole Cactus started my cactus and succulent insanity. Here I introduce you to Tom and all his friends in the ground in the most unrehearsed manner ever.

Ahhh!! Ana you found me! I'm totally fan-girling right now because I've been watching and learning from your videos since I started my cactus journey two years ago. Yes, I'm in the suburbs of Phoenix. I think we face many of the same challenges living in an extremely hot and dry climate. I hope you're getting some decent rain this summer in Vegas!

Brittle bush are so beautiful! The only problem is the amount of leaves they drop! It's a nightmare to clean-up but I love the plant regardless!

The mature ones seem to take the summers okay here (I'm as amazed as you are!), there are many big ones all over town. I do throw a laundry basket over my totem pole when it gets above 105F. The more time it has been in the ground the more it seems to be able to take the sun. I'm hoping at some point it won't need any help during the hottest days of summer. Let's see next summer!

Have Cookie had any problems with all the spines? I got two dogs and i am pretty paranoid with them around my Opuntias... Best regards :)

No issues so far with the spines! It's funny you mention this because when I first started I was worried about landscape plants with spines because of Cookie. That's how I picked the spineless Totem Pole cactus as my first landscape cactus, gosh, I almost forgot about this! My Opuntia don't have large spines but they do have some glochids. Luckily I don't see Cookie too interested in the Opuntia.
