Great video Barrie must admit the older I get, the more I seem to enjoy the tri-ang, tri-ang Hornby period of models 😀 simpler times, who still enjoys looking at the old catalogues? Best wishes Steve.

Watched your video on the corridor on the Flying Scotsman’s tenders. I looked at my Triangle/Hornby model Flying Scotsman tender. The model number on the loco is R850 and the tender is R851/6 (apple green). There is a door on the front and door on the back of the tender but no corridor roof adjacent the water tank. Rgds from Down Under.

fascinating Barrie, you've a real eye for the detail and history of the hobby. Mysteries appearing all the time, have a great Sunday mate, from Scott in Ireland.

Hi Barrie, A great find. I just had to check mine after seeing the video. Sadly I do not have one of these tenders.

Hi Barrie, I do have one of the BR Flying Scotsman Locomotive with the Corridor Tender made in 1971 but the model Number of mine is R850N it is fitted with the Firebox Glow and the Exhaust Steam Sound Features, it also has plated wheels on it. I had it from NEW so I know it is genuine and underneath the Tender like yours it is stamped Triang Hornby, the locomotive body is also stamped Triang Hornby this is a solo boxed item it is not out of a set.. I also have exactly the same model without the Corridor Tender but still with the Firebox Glow, Exhaust steam Sound and Plated Wheels. These are the rarest of the Triang Hornby Flying Scotsman Models and were made to complete a batch for a specific customer, I think Kays Catalogue from memory. The BR Flying Scotsman came out first in 1968 with the last few made in 1971 there were also some bodies made with Black Nameplates. I should check yours as it will be fitted with the Firebox Glow feature, if the bulb has gone S5099 is the part number, they do turn up from time to time. Both BR and LNER Triang Hornby Tenders have the door in the front but do NOT have the raised section of roof shown at 06:49 the only insert was that for the rear of the Tender to make it Corridor or Non Corridor the rest of the tender was the same for both the BR and LNER versions. The LNER Tender you showed was a later Hornby Variant when the raised section of roof was added. If I can find out which model it was first used on and in what year I will post an amendment to this comment.

@@andrewmerriman7133 R398 from 1982 ish, the 1st tender driven one, had the first raised corridor part on the tender. I've checked on all my models

@@PNMotorsportTrains Hi thank you for confirming that for me I thought that was the case but I am not that well up on Hornby after 1974. Your quite correct R398 was first introduced in 1982 and was the first A1 Flying Scotsman Hornby ever made.

@andrewmerriman7133 your welcome. I have a fair few flying scotsmans in my collection. From R850 and R855 from 1968 according to the paperwork, all the way till last years steam generator one. R398 is most common to find, which is handy for doing custom renaming and numbering for the other Gresley A1s (as long they had corridor tenders and not the Great Northern style)

Mine is the late 1968 version; the letter 'N' refers to 'Nickle Plated Wheels' as on your model and could be the 1971 version. Also the Chuff-Chuff sound box was not around in 1968. Very deep subject with facts hard to obtain.

@@BarrieDavisModelRailways Barrie, your post is not correct the Suffix N stands for Noise NOT Nickel Plated Wheels! the initial intention was to use a C Suffix for Chuff Chuff but as the C was already used for other items (e.g. R419C Catenary Mast and Basis) it was decided to use the N Suffix Instead. Where an item did NOT have plated wheels in 1971 but did do in 1972 The N suffix was dropped and replaced by an A Suffix. For example the 1971 Princess Elizabeth was model R258NS however in 1972 it gained Nickel Plated Wheels when the model Number became R258AS there was never more than two suffix letters used at that time so the 1972 model could NOT be listed as R258ANS. With the introduction of computers in 1973 all models had a R prefix followed by a 3 digit number with Suffix's no longer used. The 2 BR Flying Scotsman Locomotives I have are 1971 there can be no doubt about that, the catalogued 1971 version is R850 but it was withdrawn as there were stocks no left in Margate. It was only when Triang Hornby found that they needed to complete a Kays Catalogue order that they made the version I have. The facts about all the changes are available and if you know how you can get hold of the information to piece together the changes that happened over a very short period of time.

I have the book of Pat Hammond in my possession, but I haven't got the time to actually read it. Luckily your super interesting videos are a fantastic alternative. Thanks!

There are a few rare Triang Railways and Triang-Hornby models that have been forgotten about. For instance, I have a first production run 1953 Triang Railways R.52 "Jinty" that has factory painted finish, is powered by an X01b disc commutator motor and has Mk.IIa couplings.

Yes never seen a BR Green one with corridor tender . I’ve got the model but definitely non corridor . A nice model . Very interesting
@leoroverman454111 күн бұрын
Barrie, just checked my version of the BR green one and I have the non corridor tender. The Loco is R850/5 and the tender is R850/6. However just as you said. I still have the original box with it's sleeve. It is for flying Scotsman but no R number. The insert in the box looks original. The Instruction that came with it is not specific the FS but is dated 1/11/68. On checking the tender I note the front insert has the corridor entrance from the footplate. So is that another error? hny

Hello barrie,in brunswick Green this is a beautiful loco,may I just ask your advice please? As I have 4-6-2 princess Victoria in black early emblem from Tri-Ang pre 1964 insomuch as Tri-Ang/Hornby were post 1964,....it is a beautiful loco and runs perfectly, albeit quite noisy, can you shed any light on this loco? I live in Hingham,if you know then you know.👍

Hi the combination of the name Princess Victoria and the early emblem tender could come from one of two eras. A unlined Tender would indicate it is a Hornby R050 made in 1974 which is the most likely. If the Tender is lined then it will have been made by Triang in late 1958 or early 1959. Officially Princess Victoria was made by Triang from 1959 to 1962. The Tender with the early emblem was officially made by Triang between 1952 and 1958. However the name change could have occurred in late 1958 or the emblem change could have occurred in the early part of 1959. Hope that helps but if you look under the body of the locomotive it will say either Triang or Hornby. If you look at the underside of the Tender and it has a screw in the middle then that would indicate it was made by Hornby in 1974. If the screw is under the Tender coal that would tell you it is made by Triang in the 1950's.

My tri-ang hornby BR Green flying Scotsman doesn't have a corridor tender, nor the red nameplates. But it does have a double chimney fitted. Also got R855 the LNER apple green Scotsman from same time period with a corridor tender. Then the later R845 Hornby Railways Flying Scotsman from 1978.
@andrewmerriman713312 күн бұрын
Hi If you have a double chimney Flying Scotsman it is not a genuine Triang Hornby original version they only made them with a single chimney. If it is marked Triang Hornby underneath it has been modified to a double chimney but I suspect it will be marked Hornby or something else.
@PNMotorsportTrains12 күн бұрын
@andrewmerriman7133 oh I know it's been modified. I've seen the glue marks (and the video of it is on my channel)
