"one thing leads to another", "red skies", and " stand or fall" are your next fixx songs. vocalist and head songwriter cy currin wrote politically complex songs reflecting the cold war anxiety of the '80s. the fixx were an interesting band.

Fixx lead vocalist Cy Curnin reflected on its meaning in a 2008 interview: "It was about looking at your own life, not so much about amassing material things but about experiences that lend you to be blissful... The song was written from the point of view of the release you get when you have nothing left to lose."

I turned 20 in 1983. The Fixx wrote songs that referenced the nuclear war we all thought was about to happen. Other bands like U2 wrote similar anthems. Combine that sentiment with movies like the TV event "The Day After" that fall and Red Dawn the next year. We were sure the cold war was about to really turn hot. I remember truly being afraid, expecting to hear sirens at any minute from an impending Russian missile attack.

I always thought Saved by Zero was about nuclear war with “Zero” referencing Ground Zero of a nuclear attack. Was I right then? Also, “The Day After” was partly filmed at the University of Kansas while I was going there in the Fall of 1982.

@@wiltchamberlainisthegoat13 I'm not even sure that Saved by Zero was a nuclear war song, "Red Skies" or "Stand or Fall" certainly were. Amazing that you were at KU when "They Day After" was filmed. I found that such a scary time. As a UNC grad, certainly respect your username , the KU basketball program, and all the close ties between my alma mater, and yours, the mother program of all college basketball, but our NYC players did beat Wilt by one in 1957. How many times did you beat us in return?

@@robertelee63 I have tremendous respect for UNC basketball. I’ve always contended there are two GOATs in my opinion: “pre-modern” era, Wilt Chamberlain; “modern” era, Michael Jordan. In a sense, I say it’s a tie. Yes, I love the ties between the two schools: Dean Smith, Larry Brown, Roy Williams, and that wild 1957 National Championship game won by UNC by one point in 3OT. It’s crazy to think about how significant that game was. If Kansas had scored one more basket in triple OT, then UNC and Kansas would be tied with 5 NCAA Titles each. Instead, UNC leads 6 to 4. Who would have thought that one basket in 1957 could hold so much significance?
@wiltchamberlainisthegoat13

@@robertelee63 Regarding “The Day After”, they used Allen Fieldhouse in the movie as a place for survivors to be housed and looked after. I wish I had tried to be an extra in the movie. Unfortunately, I did not. It’s still the most-watched TV movie of all-time. A bunch of us got together to watch the movie. It was indeed scary and very impactful. President Reagan watched the movie and said it made him very sad and even influenced his talks with Mikhail Gorbachev. Now I’ve got to listen again to “Red Skies” and “Stand or Fall”. 😃 ☮️

I'm happy to see the younger generations discover these artists. When I was growing up, we researched music and movies many years prior to our birth to understand how we got to where we were. I don't see that same effort or ambition in other generations. Most are just into the decade they were born and forward.

This one takes me back. The Fixx have a few songs that are my favorites. This was the one that introduced me to their music. The bit at the end of the song with the low notes used to sound to me like the ominous presence of a black hole in outer space, but since then Danny Elfman used those notes for the opening to his Batman OST. More recently this song's been used a lot on a radio commercial. It's weird to describe something going on with radio in this day and age.

It was about looking at your own life, not so much about amassing material things but about experiences that lend you to be blissful... The song was written from the point of view of the release you get when you have nothing left to lose. It’s sort of a meditation. It clears your head of all fears and panics and illusions and you get back to the basics, which is a Buddhist mantra, which I practiced back then, and which I still do. The idea of the song is how great it is to get back to zero

The Fixx is a British Rock band, that had its greatest success during the 1980s. They had a number of hit sons and music videos in the US, such as “Stand Or Fall”, “Red Skies”, “Saved By Zero”, and”One Thing Leads To Another”. Bassist Alfie Agius played bass on this song, and “One Thing Leads To Another”, but left the group after working on 4 songs for the band’s 1983 album, “Reach The Beach”. He joined the Heavy Metal band, Fastway. Cy Curnin is the lead singer and co-founder of The Fixx. The band has had numerous personnel changes, but are still together, and tour regularly.

MTV had a huge influence on the 80's music scene in the USA and at the start they only had a limited number of videos to play, many of which came from UK bands. New Wave came came here thanks to MTV. These guys had a few videos in heavy rotation on the channel - I would lay on my mom's ottoman in front of our 13in TV watching MTV for literally hours a day so I knew who The Fixx and Men Without Hats and The Vapours and Haircut 100 and A Flock of Seagulls and Adam Ant and the Eurythmics and Asia and Soft Cell and Kajagoogoo and Spandau Ballet all were.

"red skies at night" is the fixx song that comes to mind first for me. Some of the others people mention, once they say the title I think, "oh yeah, that one too". Just off hand, if you r ever seen the video for Tina Turner's "better be good to me", the lead singer for the fixx is in it, just kinda hopping around. I've always wondered why, like did he write it and just did a bit in the vid? Maybe was just there guesting? Happened to be there doing something himself, visited and ended up in the vid?... Edit: I think the last time I thought about that was pre internet. Looked it up, interesting story.

Brown joined for the tour on this album and stayed with the band since. (On the album, Grenfell played synthesized bass.) The Fixx came from London and were known as an extremely serious new wave band whose primary success was in the US. 1982,3,4 had so much on the radio. New Wave music out of the UK. Part of the scene. The Fixx, Simple Minds, Ultravox. Then from Australia Pseudo Echo.

The title itself, "Saved by Zero," refers to the concept of resetting a counter or starting anew. The song's lyrics explore the idea of starting over, letting go of past mistakes, and embracing a fresh perspective. The repeated refrain "Saved by zero" can be seen as a metaphor for hitting a point of absolute emptiness or a blank slate, where old patterns and ideas are wiped away, allowing for a new beginning. Throughout the song, there's a sense of reflection on the struggles and challenges that life presents. The line "Maybe, someday, saved by, saved by zero" suggests a hope for a brighter future or a better outcome, a belief that despite difficulties, there's potential for positive change and growth. In essence, "Saved by Zero" can be seen as a meditation on transformation and the power of starting from scratch, shedding old habits and mindsets, and embracing the potential for renewal and reinvention. The song's meaning is deliberately open-ended, allowing listeners to relate it to their own experiences and interpretations.

Yes!!! Been wanting this for a while. Cy Curnin and Jamie West-Oram (guitar) were a key part of my early-80s experience. And they're still touring today! Many classics mentioned here. I have to vote for my favorite, "Deeper and Deeper", which sometimes gets overlooked because it was a movie soundtrack song. But it's killer!

Thanks for playing this! They were on the 80s Cruise and still sound and look great!! This video was one of the early videos I loved. The father not accepting the son's love of art and belittling him and the son feeling rejected by the parents and his inner turmoil. It was very deep.

"Saved By Zero" (1983) was the 2nd single by The Fixx to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking @ #20. The next single "One Thing Leads To Another" was their biggest hit and only Top 10 single peaking @ #4 in 1983.

I was big time into The Fixx in HS in 1st half of 80’s. Unfortunately my friends and classmates never saw the light so I had to enjoy the two albums I had on my own. I felt like I knew a secret!

Love the Fixx. I did a lot of college homework in the library to the Fixx's Phantoms album (cassette) to block out the world. Learned to really appreciate their talent. From what I read recently, the Fixx is still around (I just missed them on tour here in D.C.) in their original lineup. Not many bands who have been together for 30+ years can say that. More Fixx please.

I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen this video and I remember hearing this song during my Senior Year of high school or just after that. .. . I loved The Fixx and I never even considered what they looked like. Music videos were a brand new thing and most people didn’t have cable back then either.

That's what I keep saying, but it seems like most people DID have cable, at least judging by the number of people who seem to have seen all these videos. I had to get a satellite dish in '86 to finally even be able to see MTV, and didn't get cable until 2012!
