They started out as the Young Rascals and even wore attire that looked like the original Little Rascals, but they dropped the outfits and the name Young and just became known as the Rascals. Might have been due to trademark concerns.

Felix Cavaliere, the songwriter and usually lead singer of this group, had toured in Europe in 1963 as the organ player for another group and guess who else was on the bill? The Beatles! Felix took one look at that and headed back to the States and put this band together. Lots of great songs in the mid-to-late Sixties: "I've Been Lonely Too Long," "A Girl Like You," and "People Got To Be Free," among others.

One of the iconic songs of the sixties was the Rascal's "People Got to Be Free" from 1968. 1967's "How Can I Be Sure?" was also a big hit for them. A big hit song with kind of a similar message and feel as this one was Simon and Garfunkel's "Feelin' Groovy" from 1967, and another sixties song with the word groovy in it is the Mamas and the Papas' "Somebody Groovy" from 1965.

The Harper's Bizarre version of Feelin Groovy was better in my opinion since it became a hit and was longer than the Simon and Garfunkel version. Of course kudos to Simon and Garfunkel for writing such a great song.

When I hear "A Beautiful Morning " I'm transported to my mom's kitchen. NYC, mid-summer 1968. She had a small table radio there and that song was in heavy rotation. We didn't have A/C, the windows are open and the air was warm with it's own early morning smell. It was going to be a hot day, I was on vacation from school, and the day held many possibilities.

The Young Rascals (later, The Rascals) was one of the great groups of the 60s. How Can I Be Sure is their most beautiful song. When their first hit, Good Lovin', was released in early 1966, I was in 6th grade & the group has been well-played on the soundtrack of my life. Another great song, People Got To Be Free, was The Rascals' entry on the long list of protest songs of the late 60s. Great group to hear again. And again.

I'm from the NYC/NJ area and the Rascals came up in the clubs and were a highly polished act by the time they started recording and only got better. "Good Lovin'" is a hard edged rock feel, "A Beautiful Morning" is closer to Groovin'. You called it with the soulful feeling. They also were concerned with events in the news with "People Got To Be Free". Their last two albums "Peaceful World" & "The Island Of Real" are actually very soulful/funky/jazz fusion, I don't think they sold as well because their audience was more rock oriented but I really like these albums. Their earlier albums though did have the strongest material.

Groovin" is a single released in 1967 by American rock band the Young Rascals that became a number-one hit and one of the group's signature songs. It has been covered by many artists, including the Young Rascals themselves in other languages. A slightly different version was later released on their third studio album, Groovin'. Written by group members Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati and with a lead vocal from Cavaliere, it is a slow, relaxed groove, based on Cavaliere's newfound interest in Afro-Cuban music. The instrumentation of the song includes a conga, a Cuban-influenced bass guitar line from session musician Chuck Rainey, and a harmonica part, performed first for the single version by New York session musician Michael Weinstein, and later for the album version by Gene Cornish. "Groovin" was inspired by Cavaliere's then-girlfriend, Adrienne Buccheri. He said of her, "I believe she was divinely sent for the purpose of inspiring my creativity."[2] Lyrically, "Groovin'" is the evocation of a person in love: Life would be ecstasy, you and me endlessly ... Groovin' ... on a Sunday afternoon Really couldn't get away too soon - Cavaliere wrote the music for the song, and he and Eddie Brigati collaborated on the lyrics. The basic track was recorded by Cavaliere on vocals and piano, with Dino Danelli playing conga and woodblock and Gene Cornish on tambourine. Background vocals by Eddie and David Brigati were added later. Bass was added by Chuck Rainey, and occasional session musician Michael Weinstein provided the harmonica. The production was supervised by Arif Mardin. The song is fairly different from the Rascals' white soul origins, enough so that Atlantic Records head Jerry Wexler did not want to release the single. Cavaliere credits disc jockey Murray the K with intervening to encourage Atlantic to release the song: "To tell you the truth, they didn't originally like the record because it had no drum on it...We had just cut it, and [Murray the K] came in the studio to say hello. After he heard the song, he said, 'Man, this is a smash.' So, when he later heard that Atlantic didn't want to put it out, he went to see Jerry Wexler and said, 'Are you crazy? This is a friggin' No. 1 record.' He was right, because it eventually became No. 1 for four straight weeks." The single became an instant hit in May 1967, spending four nonconsecutive weeks atop the Billboard pop singles chart. The weeks were interrupted by Aretha Franklin's cover of "Respect", which spent two weeks at No. 1 in the middle of "Groovin'"'s run. Interestingly, Franklin would later cover "Groovin'" for her album Lady Soul. The song also reached No. 3 on the Billboard Black Songs chart. “Groovin'" was the only hit the group ever had in the United Kingdom, reaching No. 8 on the UK Singles Chart. After the fourth week, "Groovin'" dropped from the charts; Casey Kasem remarked on it in his radio show American Top 40 five years later. The song was an RIAA-certified gold record on June 13, 1967. Due to its massive popularity, the track was included on the Young Rascals' late July 1967 album of the same name, albeit with an alternate harmonica solo by Cornish on the stereo version. The Rascals performing "Groovin'" during their 2013 Once Upon a Dream show, with a peaceful park scene showing on the video screen behind them. Gene Cornish plays the well-known harmonica part. "Groovin'" is one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll, and is also the recipient of a Grammy Hall of Fame Award. The phrase "you and me endlessly" was often misheard as the mondegreen "you and me and Leslie".

"It's a Beautiful Morning", "People Got To Be Free", "You Better Run" (covered by Pat Benatar) "It's Wonderful", "How Can I Be sure", "I've Been Lonely Too Long". All are classics worth checking out by the Young Rascals AKA the Rascals.

LOVED this reaction! This song came out on 7/31/67, "The summer of love". I had just turned 12 two days earlier and was getting ready for the 8th grade not far from you. Bell Jr High in Tulsa. And I had this on vinyl, albeit a 45 because they were about 50 cents and that's all a paperboy could afford! 33s were out of my price range. lol And yes, that is a harmonica. (I've played for 59 years)

Simon & Garfunkel "The 59th Street Bridge Song". Thanks. The (Young) Rascals are one of those eclectic groups that don't sound the same every time. I love all their stuff.

One of the best American Groups of the 60's. Rascals had "blue eyed soul". Meaningful songs: People Got To Be Free came out Summer '68 as Russian tanks were used to repress hope of freedom in Czechoslovakia. Groovin', such a mellow, peaceful, feel good song that could be so enjoyed when Sundays were still a relaxful day for just about everyone. How Can I Be Sure, is still very relevant today to any relationship. A Beautiful Morning, is such an inspiring, feel good song to start the day off with.

Wow! One of the great soulful bands of the 60s and very underrated…you two are about to go down a very soulful rock rabbit hole unlike no other. I recommend the songs I’ve Been Lonely Too Long, How Can I Be Sure, Good Lovin, A Beautiful Morning, if you can, watch a video of them as well

Yep, harmonica. They come in different keys... check out videos by Blues Traveler...John Popper has a vest made just to hold all his different harmonicas. Oh and in Neil Young's live version of "Heart of Gold" he's actually talking about having to find the harmonica with the proper key for the song.

These guys… the core of Eddie Brigati & Felix Cavaliere… became just The Rascals later… and we’re huge back in the ‘65 to ‘72 era. Others have made great suggestions, but they were really the huge kickoff of the ‘blue eyed soul’ later followed up by Daryl Hall, Todd Rundgren and others. We who lived in N NJ at that time were especially proud of them!

Steve, they should do a Jersey Boys Part 2 about the Rascals. But the best Blue-Eyed Soul group out of Jersey was the Soul Survivors. They were so under-rated.

Rarely was the word grooven or groovy used back in the sixties. It wasn't really popular with everyday life. However this song was popular.

The Rascal did some great songs. They should do a Jersey Boys 2 about this and Strongly Suggest "Good Lovin'" "Beautiful Mornin'" As far as more Blue-Eyed Soul music from the 60's, you should try another Jersey band The Soul Survivors and "Expressway to Your Heart".
