I have seen tinsil made out of lead. When I was an archivist and we would process office paperwork many of the christmas cards up to the time following WWII would have black on them. This was not indicating death or mourning but the silver used on the card tarnishing.

Fabulous to hear about christmases in the past. Pity the canera work wasn't clearer as it was difficult to see the items he was referring to at times. Maybe will get the opportunity to visit from Australia but in any event great to see these items preserved and appreciated. Australia has a more english take on Christmas yet we embrace the idea of snow at Xmas despite it being one of the hottest times of the year here . Our trees are decorated with fake snow etc.lol. It is surprising that our traditions are nonetheless similiar to yours through the ages.Thank you for your informative tour.

First originals , then not christmas related trees but tied with winter solstice, had decorations made from straws and red yarn, what was/is our very old tradition what comes from time before christmas was even a thing. First public Christmas tree in history was put up in Tallinn / what was very important port and trading town then / and yes it was decorated with edible gifts / apples and cookies/ for town poor people. Later was used more items like nuts and berries too. From that it very quickly spread to all over the world. To have evergreen tree decorated for winter solstice is our very very old tradition what goes back to maybe before AD, it was just taken over and started use in religious context. Anyway outcome was not bad, nowdays it has got nearly back its old meaning - to bring hapiness and hope to people in darkest time of year.
