I agree. I had the digital version from 2000 and it was the best phone I ever had. And that’s coming from someone who, currently, has an iPhone 14 Pro Max. I wish Motorola would make a newer StarTAC.

Great upload. Love how apparently only people in business attire used Startacs.

You would have to recall the sheer status attached to owning one of these in late '96. Talking on a cell phone, anywhere, in public was then a showstopper.

@ $500USD in 1996 are now $797.2USD in 2020, or $15,798MXN adjusted for inflation. So, yes. It was an expensive phone, but nowadays phones rarely go down that price range...

Still my favorite wireless phone to date. Then iPhone 4. I wish phones still came with a changeable battery like the startac; I’d rather snap on a freshly charged battery than a battery case. Looked up this vid after thinking how this phone eventually inspired the RAZR, which eventually inspired the RAZR 2019. But what’s funny to me is that the original RAZR was razor thin compared to the StarTAC, but the RAZR 2019 isn’t thin at all-it’s just a clamshell flip phone by Motorola, so the RAZR name doesn’t make sense for it except to get attention

It's not a safety design that playing DTMF sound when typing password. someone may be able to hear or record the tone and then identify the numbers. they can unlock the phone if they can touch it.

3:51 well, how do the analog signals work? Do phone calls still cost money? If it switches outside the coverage area, what does that mean?
@burkanx55462 жыл бұрын
Besides the limited talk-time due to battery life. Most people ran on Minute plans for calls at the time. Went over your minutes? Got an over-fee.

Like those early car cell phones or the big shoulder strap portable cell phones from the 80’s that lasted 2-4 hours and costed 4,000 dollars. Frack, in 30 years my current iPhone 12 pro max will look like a dinosaur antique.

There were many, many variations of the StarTAC made, analog, TDMA, CDMA and GSM. The analog and TDMA ones can’t be used at all anymore, as those systems were shut-down over a decade ago. I think there is a couple of carriers that will activate the CDMA ones, but it’s getting harder to do by the day. The GSM ones are the easiest, as you just need a carrier that still supports 2G, and pop your SIM card in (provided the phone is unlocked). It all depends on what kind you have. Keep in mind though, 2G will likely be completely gone in the couple of years, so the time to use them is NOW, as that time is running out, unfortunately (it really is a shame).

Hard to use? Really? These phones are simple and quite straightforward, really. Motorola also kept the same basic interface on their phones for many years, so a lot of the key combos on the DynaTACs and MicroTACs are the same as the StarTAC, with the StarTAC having some extra features.
