Really excellent presentation - I'm fortunate enough to have just purchased an album of Hiroshige originals so this has been really educational

I'm so sorry that I missed this. I found it really interesting and informative. As someone who has very recently found myself almost by accident dealing in Japanese woodblock prints and trying to learn as much as possible as quickly as possible, this has been invaluable. Thank you to all concerned.

I have an early facsimile of the Tokaido Road series purchased in Japan in the 1920s that is intact in the original fan fold binding that shows the prints in their proper sequence. I always wondered if a museum or collector would value the book as it shows how the series was first presented to the buyer of that series.

I do not find the evidence presented by Mr Marks - that there are similar images from other artists - conclusive enough to say that Hiroshige did NOT travel the Tôkaidô and make original sketches. The episodes and the scenery depicted might have been iconic and thus depicted similarly by different artists.
