Something important to keep in mind regarding messages like this/from this era; maximum agricultural productivity then was *much* lower than it is now! The effect of that was food was much more expensive relative to wages, and the valuation difference between prime and marginal lands for ag use was much smaller than it is now. Currently, we have a situation where foodstuffs can only be produced economically on the best class 1and 2 lands, but even then at such high output levels as to provide a surplus. Class 3 and 4 lands in ag use are now unable to compete against non-farm purchasers from a business perspective. The net effect of this has been to put 'recreational' and amenity value ownership of the land into the range where individual ownership is possible, whereas when this film was made, it was prohibitively expensive for all but the very wealthy and/or public ownership entities. It is this competition from new non-farm buyers that constitutes most of our 'rural crisis'.

Some of the background music reminds me of Star Trek Original Series where they're on an away mission and someone in a red shirt is about to be attacked by an alien monster or poisonous plant.

@ 06.40 Times have changed, then it was city boys on foot with a dog chasing a rabbit on public land, now its city men with stolen 4x4s and dogs illegally hare coursing and damaging farmers crops on private land.

Give way to Bison.........Bison spotted at 5:33 on Ivinghoe Beacon........an advance party of Americans or an early attempt at rewilding?? Anybody got any info on them.....was it a game park or an early Bison farm? all filmed on the same sunny day? back then.....green space for everyone.....

Hey, Canadian here living in the UK. The bison in the video definitely seem to be American bison because American bison usually feed on grass whereas European bison wouldn't be found in that sort of landscape - usually woodland instead. I don't think it would've been an attempt at rewilding because they'd probably use European bison? Like they've done in the Blean around 2022.

@oliviagomes8835 hello....cheers....i guessed they were Plains Bison....head shape and stockier heavier frame size.....bovines are kind of a hobby of mine....i have a cow farm!....just wondered if anybody had any history on the herd in that location in the 1940s...... European Bison are browsers, forest animals......and stand narrower with narrower heads.....who owned Ivinghoe Beacon at that time might give a clue as to their purpose.....an interest to a wealthy landowner....or an early attempt to farm Bison.....I'm always curious.....anybody know? I have eaten Bison....farmed Plains Bison in the UK....it has an interesting taste....in comparison to beef, venison or horse....Bison i felt is a very "dry" tasting meat....ultra lean.....truthfully i didn't really take to it.....maybe chose the wrong wine with it! for more farming nostalgia....:).....kzbin.info/www/bejne/pX7VhoCOqa9-m8k
