The introduction of the Virgin Atlantic A350-1000 was something that I had been anxiously awaiting (for far longer than I care to admit), and I was super excited to be able to give it a try only 6 days after its inaugural flight.
This is footage from flight number 138 from New York (JFK) to London (LHR). I was seated in 50D, an economy class seat in the forward cabin. Aircraft registration was G-VLUX and the pink mood lighting was nothing short of psychedelic.

FLL Aviation JFK has horrific catering. Almost any airline’s food will be lower grade than most. I find it to be true no matter which catering company they use, though DO&CO is clearly above others in my view. A GateGourmet catering truck usually means “inedible gloop”.

I really genuinely love your reviews. I wish I could travel more, love flying but am no good in airports, my anxiety and PTSD cannot handle it. Had such a bad experience at MCO last time I flew that I don’t think I’ll be able to ever again. Yeah Virgin Atlantic’s food is beyond shocking, I have never once eaten it, I made sure to eat before and after the flights instead

The Virgin Atlantic maps are mesmerizing. Actually, the windows are crazy. Taller, and no pull down shades. They digitally dim after the take-off. A huge help if you’re off the wing (sun glare).

Thanks for an interesting video. We normally travel, as a family of 4, VA Premium, with reward flights. VA have now restricted most flights to just 2 available reward seats per flight. No flipping good for families! So, even though we have shed loads of Virgin Points, this year we will be flying economy! This video reassures me that it should still be amazing, though I will miss the wonder wall that you usually get in Premium. Will definitely pack extra food for our trip to LAX, as that meal was poor!

Great and funny review as always Scott and like you I love the external cameras on any aircraft !! Reasonable product by the look of things but the "cute" lighting etc sort of puts me off but Virgin are known for their different ways of doing things so I take it as a plus !!! The food on the flight looked "ordinary" and one would expect a bit more from this carrier. Glad you enjoyed the "new plane "!!

I was lucky enough to fly LHR-JFK on Virgins A350 3 days ago in Upper Class. I found the plane amazing but was not a fan of the intense pink mood lighting. For some reason on approach to JFK they changed the color to a cooler blue hue and it was fantastic! Enjoyed your review!

My first flying experience was with virgin and I loved it. This was many years ago so I’m sad to see they have become stingy with the meals. I swear when I flew many moons ago they fed me like 5 times lol 😂 every time I looked up there was a tray of food and/or snacks staring at me 🍱.

I find Virgin food is a lot better when you depart the UK! I really enjoyed my chilli on an outbound to Miami. Return back to Heathrow in premium was a Thai pork dish which wasn’t so great.

maybe i've seen to many flight reviews Scott, but i thought that flight was average at best, food was barely enough and although it was a new aircraft for VA, the economy class seat didnt wow me at all. your review of the flight in its usual sanspotter style, which i have come to like, enjoy greatly. as you fly economy loads Scott, who's got the best economy and why?

You’re right Shane - it was mostly average. The seats were decent, but the food was nasty. 😄 My favorite economy class to date was Air New Zealand (77W) - comfy seats (though narrow), and attention to detail that most other carriers just can’t get right. That cabin crew was the most refined and professional I’ve ever come across - even more so than my Emirates and Qatar experiences. However, everyone says ANA economy can’t be beat, and I’m doing that in just two weeks (SFO-NRT). Can’t wait to see how it compares...

@@sanspotter i feel people have become more savvy and demand more when they travel, not enough £££ is spent in economy and airlines need to up thier game way higher, basic amenity kits would be a start and free wifi like Air NZ is what people want. also the food is left a lot to be desired and impersonally dont eat in flight meals, too much carbs, sugar etc. Asian airlines lead he way, ANA & JAL prem economy would be great reviews

SANspotter Umm ANA economy seats are less than 17” wide. No way. The best trans-Atlantic offering in economy is still HOU-MAN and JFK-FRA on Singapore. Very affordable too!

I just had watched another review of the same flight on the same plane, and he, too, was not thrilled with the catering. He also thought the seating was tight and not that comfortable, and the headphones' volume was too low. He had expected something great from Virgin and was disappointed. Although you are a bit more kind, my impression from both reviews is that the A350-1000 is a nice plane but Virgin kinda drops the ball.

It was “lap 5...” - basically, it’s extremely common for flights to circle in a holding pattern before landing at LHR. We went around in circles for 20 minutes before beginning our approach. 👍🏻

@@sanspotter its mainly flights back to the uk are not great for food, but outbound Heathrow pre covid are much tastier as relying on other contractors; I flew AA back from Charlotte and was greeted with a yoghurt and granola for breakfast I also needed a full English !
