Too late, 7:00 but next time if you mount to round SS handrail, bimini, etc. Use Heavy Wall rubber hose as a shim, cut the hose lengthwise to wrap it on tubing then the slightly larger u-bolt will fit snuggly .... then you might not have needed the extra washers to shim ..... 👍👍

I agree with you, a Radar is a good tool for crossing an ocean and for collision avoidance. Also, in a foggy situation or heavy rain when approaching a port or marina at night, it is helpful. The difference between a conventional and broadband radar is that the Broadband will detect object closer to the boat but the maximum range is less. Also it consumes less power and does not need warming up prior to operate. Both units are good and for what you intend to do, yours is just fine. Practice a lot as it is not obvious what the different settings operate. Cheers

I think you made a great and economic decision. You can cruise without one but you’ll be a lot safer with it. Also, with a little modification you could adapt your radar platform to tilt so you can level it out on a heel.

I did everything you did with the old Raymarine radar. I could not get the cable through the small ho,e in the S S tubing for my arch. I ended up cutting the cable and resplicing it. That worked. This year I replaced everything with new. The radar with color shows boats heading across your course in red and heading away in green. It is doplar so at shorter ranges is more acrid.

As for frying your brains, as long as you are in the cockpit there is no danger at all since you are practically underneath the radar beam. Typically those radars are transmitting a beam that is +- 7° to the horizontal. If persons have to work on the fore deck for extended periods of time (say more than 10 min.) you should turn off the radar to play it safe. If your radar got MARPA (target tracking) then a highly precise electronic compass is mandatory to get reliable results, the manual should give the data required..

Definitely NOT boring. Good get! Your safety quotient goes up exponentially for minimal $$$, dated as the technology may be on your particular unit. If AIS were mandated like aviation ADSB in/out, one might argue for AIS and no radar.....simply no hiding from radar. You've made the right decision and future upgrades will only enhance your safety.

You could run the cable outside the mast. With no cable guides I just dropped mine straight down inside and had no issues. I cut the cable inside the boat and used a block connector, again no problems. Having personally experienced physiological problems with long term prolonged exposure to bluetooth frequencies, (headphones), I would want any microwave equipment as far away from me as possible, especially RADAR which is high power.
@seethelittlethings3 жыл бұрын
we thought about cutting and reattaching, but felt we could damage the shielding too much. Good to hear it's not that big of a deal
@crikycrocky3 жыл бұрын
@@seethelittlethings As long as the current path is maintained the shielding properties will carry on working. I had my RADAR about 2/3 of the way up the mast and the display adjacent to the nav table on a 27ft boat then on a 37ft cat, worked fine close in and at max distance. Mostly I used it for spotting the approach of ships at night where I would set a scan alarm to warn me if something was headed my way. this was pre the now greater adoption of AIS on small sailing vessels 20 odd years ago. I'm very glad I had it on a number of occasions.

I think you will find that the radar unit will Significantly reduce your solar output due to shading even when the amount of shading on the panel is small. A higher, single purpose mast at the stern (gimballed naturally) will provide you with the best results.
@seethelittlethings3 жыл бұрын
It’s actually ok. If the radar wasn’t right next to it on same height but further up and aft it would create more shade during noon, which are our bulk hours. When the sun is low it shades a cell or two, but when the sun is low it’s a lost hour anyways
@michaeldobson88593 жыл бұрын
You could have used a muffler style of clamp over the top of the U bolt but it may have been difficult to locate. If I remember your tubing is 30mm. Look in the Grainger catalog they have several 30 mm to flat clamps. Yes, hindsight is 20/20 vision. Good decision on locating the radar.

Hi there, I had both old radar of 1990 on NMEA1830 and new radar of 2005 on NMEA2000. The main difference is power consumption. I cannot quantify it, but the new radar is intelligent and thus consumes considerably less Amps. If that is a concern to you, try to find settings that put your radar to idle if not in continuous use in a long passage, but still able to identify new targets and alert you. Good luck. Silvano

for safety of family members and pregnant ladies, place move that x ray machine from the present location so close to the helm location even though this is where they used to install them until they realised what a health hazard it is to install this device so close to the crew in the helm position. This why most install up the mast even though can get a ghost from the mast angle section most do a small offset but i do not know if this helps (if installed on the top just wiped out any other antenna device so google "Association (NMEA) Installation Guidelines" for distances for antennas ). The beam from the device can vary from model and manufacture but the general rule of thumb is 25 degrees for the horizontal plane and the closer to the device the higher the signal intensity. thank you for sharing your life
@bayanicustodio39983 жыл бұрын
Only if you put your head at the same level as the antenna. Well, for long periods of time. The best thing to do is contact the manufacturer to see what the beam pattern is supposed to be like and work from that. Things like elevation settings do matter. All I can say is that the total power output is very low but the pulse power is high. 🙂

Who are the Luddites that are against RADAR? To me it's simple if you can get RADAR get it. If you can get it and find one compatible with existing systems so much the better. As far as where and how to mount it there we enter a region filled with compromises let's just say the discussion of that aspect there are literally volumes of conflicting information even experts argue about. I think the place and method used will work the only variables to work out will be how long you operate the RADAR for due to power consumption or other unforseen issues. Great series, keep it up guys.
@Hotzenplotz12 жыл бұрын
You know that the radar has a 15 degree downward angle of radiation? Means not only the test was dangerous (very, very little in fact because of the short time) but also operating it in this position is. I'd move a cable or have another cable pipe in the mast. Means the mast must be taken down of course.
@seethelittlethings2 жыл бұрын
We’re aware of rf, no worries. The distance to the 10 W/m2 point on a marine radar is 1m, and the radiation beam is not hitting the cockpit. Mounting radar on an arch is quite common.
