A visit to artist Katie James’ artist’s house and garden - jewel colours and a rich palette x

Very inspired by last week's visit to Rachel Ashwell's house and her focus on her colour palette I thought it would be fun to have a visit to this contrasting house, with a stronger palette, where my friend artist Katie James lives.
The garden here, a typical, long, narrow, suburban London garden, was completely empty but for the large, clipped bay tree, when Katie moved back in with her parents during her mother's last illness.
Over the past five years Katie has transformed the garden, creating this beautiful wild patch where today the tulips are dancing in a jewel carpet. Katie's eye for colour has been applied indoors too, so that while keeping some of her mother's choices, like the wonderful Colefax and Fowler curtains in the dining room, Katie's added touches of her own clever way with colour.
I hope you enjoy this clip. I love this house not just because of the warmth of the welcome whenever I visit, but because wherever I look there's something interesting to see. There's a lovely story about Katie's radio at the end: her much missed mother is clearly not very far away.

I am inspired to try a gallery wall with all kinds of art . Amateur,professional, made by our kids or cats,and family fotos and treasures tossed in.Feather,moss, you name it. Inspired. My color palate? I loveso many colors but Orange seems to be taking over my life.I have a bright blue spray painted table , it brightens up the far end of the yard, now I think I need more of this. Such a beautiful feminine garden with so many joyful touches. Thanks to the lovely Katie for allowing us into her sanctuary. Her love of family is so apparent. I did like the Swiss 🇨🇭 element having lived in Switzerland during my late teens. An absolute treasure and so inspiring. I adore earthy colours and my absolute favourite is teal\turquoise which I have in all my paintings. If I had to choose a palette it would be olive green,yellow ochre,raw sienna and teal with touches of Paynes grey and gold. My current obsession is collecting Wade Whimsies to remind me of my dear great grandmother who used to let me play with her collection. Gosh this video has sparked so many memories 🤗🎨📖🇨🇭

Katie has a rich and fruity sense of style - great fun to take a peek at it all - thanks for showing us around! At the 16 minute mark, i thought i was going a bit mental, then I realised your camera went sideways right up to 22 minutes! A bit surreal looking at her decor sideways for 6 minutes - like a tour of Salvador Dali's house! Her place is not too tidy, and not too messy - I prefer a bit of clutter, and artists are never minimalists, are they? I find too much tidiness jarring on my nerves - let's leave boring tidiness to the uncreative types! Her paintings are charming - I reckon you should get her to paint one of your dear Teacake. Pink and green are a soothing combo - colours clashing or getting along swimmingly, really are a mystery. It reminds me of that Picasso quote, which I have on my studio wall - "Why do two colours put next to each other, sing? Can one really explain this? No."

Corals and pinks and the walls are rye grass green and my pots and chairs in my garden are that pop of blue. I really enjoyed this video and loved the beautiful garden and home of your artist friend, Katie ( my granddaughter is also Katie🥰) I’m in the US but I really love English gardens and beautiful country side. I watch “Escape to the country” and I truly think England and Great Britain as a whole are so beautiful . Your question about color….I use three main colors in my home: mossy greens, yellow ochre and a brownish red. I really like the jewel tone flowers in Katie’s garden. Good morning from western Massachusetts in the USA!! I what a beautiful garden and lovely home ❤🌷😊 I do love purple and blue and green on the outside garden with hints of pinks and yellows. In the house though, my style is primarily a golden brown with mustard yellow,navy blue with some black. I like the idea of using primative antiques mixed together as I am fond of them. Fascinating. A most beautiful presentation of Katie's garden, and delicious interior colours, paintings, soft furnishings, and knick-knacks. Lovely visit to Katie's home. So much to see and be inspired by. Is she an oil painter? My colours are lilac, lemon and Indigo blue. I often use opposing colours on the colour wheel in my garden, for eg...apricot knifofias with electric blue and lilac delphiniums. And lemon marigolds with blue cornflowers and maroon scabiosa. I guess I like the contrast. But white cosmos and pom pom dahlias, always help everything to pop! Jo 😊

Love the way Katie uses meaningful family photos & relics as decor. Great vibe! No junk from Hobby Lobby! Lol Her aesthetic feels very English to me, or at least how I always imagine quaint & historic English homes to be when I read about them in books (from my home in America 😉). Especially the lovely curtains! The great old English novels always have much ado about the proper curtain fabric. Quintessential! And hers are so on-point! I’m not an artist so I’m constantly surprising myself with what I believe is a perfect colour combination in each of the five garden rooms around our house. Love this video; what a lovely artist your friend is. Unfortunately, your camera was turned sideways as soon as you entered the house and continued for some time (so frustrating), but you finally corrected the view. Your friend is a true artist, inside and outside. I picked up some good ideas to implement in my own home (a tiny basement apartment in Georgia in the US).
