A Visit to Bonhams - Previewing the Sir Roger Moore Private Collection Auction

Today I'm at Bonhams in New Bond Bond previewing some of the lots and suits from Sir Roger Moore's private collection.
Joseph Robson a specialist from the Popular Culture Department at Bonhams walks me round the collection and talks to me about the suits, their provenance and the upcoming auction October 4th.

Always sad when a family auctions off the goods of the father like this. Typically they have become used to being supported in a certain lifestyle but lack the ability or talent of the father to earn their own keep and make their own way. They are playboys or dilettantes. So they flog off everything they can.

I'm pretty sure Roger would have wanted to have some of his old stuff auctioned off, he was a loving father and grandfather and he would have liked to see his family doing well. Most of these ítems probably had no real sentimental value to him or His sons and daughter,I'm sure the real valuable stuff Is in the family still.

What on earth are you talking about? You don’t know that. They might just want to sell them off to get them out of the house. They may not want a mini collection. They may want fans to have them. Perhaps they aren’t sentimental. Jumping to ‘they need the money’ is just crass.

Sad very sad. That these were Rogers own personnel items which he kept for years. Just cannot understand why his children would want to just get rid of them. The LALD coat that Roger wore in 1973 surely his children would want to keep that it's their fathers legacy there keeping. I'm sure roger would be looking down in disgust. It's just so sad that people today care more for money then there own family. I was sad when I saw his suits all hanging up but more upset that his 3 children are selling them of to meet the needs of their own life's rather then their fathers legacy. Shame on all 3 of them

Shame on all 3 of them???? Tough crowd! Do you think these items amount to everything Moore owned?! Or anything really valuable to Roger's or his family's life? Movie memorabilia? His old movie wardrobe? Awards and gifts ? Old credit cards and IDs? Sketches and paperwork and scripts? That's all "showbusiness stuff". Rest assured the real sentimental and valuable possesions (letters, photos, art, cars, properties, real state, jewelery, cash, etc) are safe in the hands of his heirs, Roger would be the first to say to his kids "Sell this old stuff! I won't need it! " He loved his family and he would have wanted them to do well, all of this will be more appreciated in the hands of collectors. Also a couple of items were in the possesion of his third wife.

What a stupid, stupid comment. Showing a gross crassness and amazing immaturity of the writer. You don’t know them, you know nothing about them, haven’t spoke to them about the sale and yet… here you are, eviscerating them for selling off some memorabilia. Maybe they just need the space? Maybe they have the sentimental stuff kept for themselves already. You don’t know. Which makes this thought supremely asinine.
