A visit to the Courtauld Gallery: Cézanne, Monet, Renoir.

In this second film from our visit to the Courtauld Gallery, we look closely at Paul Cezanne's 'The Card Players', 1896, Claude Monet's 'Autumn Effect at Argenteuil', 1873 and Pierre Renoir's 'La Loge', 1874. These three paintings embody the key ideas of French Impressionism and post-Impressionism of the late 19th Century. By looking in detail at each painting Grace and Josh establish how and why they might have been made and what we might experience by visiting them in the gallery. A nice analysis. I haven't studied Monet to much degree and was surprised by the scratching presented in the otherwise serene painting.

The Monet landscape is an example of how the Impressionists often used contrast of color temperature and saturation in place of the contrast of light and dark (values ).

Maybe adjust the exposure of the camera to more faithfully reproduce the tones of the paintings (the Cezanne in particular) ? It's way too over-exposed on the close-ups making the painting look far lighter and more faded than it actually appears in real life. Some good points raised however.
