@jennichao8 жыл бұрын
The midterm elections are especially important during this Presidential term. Both the House and Congress are currently Republican controlled, which makes Trump's election all the more terrifying. Furthermore, Trump will also be nominating a Supreme Court Justice, who will sit on the bench for life-- far longer than Trump's term as President. Don't forget the midterm elections! :)

My stomach was in knots while uploading this and it still is. I knew the comments section wouldn't be too pretty, especially with those who were disappointed in my decision. I'm disappointed in myself too, but I'm trying to better myself and get more educated and active in this political sphere. I could have easily not talked about the election and brushed it off until people forgot, but I didn't because I wanted to hold myself accountable. This video was my first step in that direction and I hope others who felt like me take action too. Everyone makes mistakes, but it's about what you do after that matters.

Everyone makes mistakes and it is not your job to deal with other people's disappointment in you but with your own feelings about yourself. Internet isn't too forgiving of the things that are actually making us more human but that's a good reason to continue being brave and sharing moments like these! Moments when you feel that something truly matters and it takes a lot of courage admitting to yourself that you made a choice you would probably not make again. I love you Jenn. I'm super happy, however, that you owned up to it and are speaking about it now. I live in Florida and am recent graduate of UCF. I'm a democrat and me, along with many of my colleagues, are pretty upset with how our swing state... "swung." I'm not super into politics but this election was definitely a wake up call. Anyways, just had to get that out but thank you for this and thank you for constantly pushing and inspiring me as well as many many others, I'm sure.

Hi Jenn. I've been a long time viewer of yours. Over the years I've continuously enjoyed your videos, your bright spirit and your honesty. A couple of days ago I saw you post a IG video that said Black Lives Matter, and today I see you've spoken out about the importance of voting and knowing what's happening in America (The 13th). I just want to say THANK YOU. Thank you for speaking out. Thank you for sharing your voice. Thank you for being honest even if it was hard. When you posted that on IG I ran to my boyfriend (who also knows who you are since I've watched you for so long) and I excitedly told him how you had opened up about a topic that is hugely important to our lives as black Americans. I know that I don't know you personally and that this may seem weird, but I want you to know that I am truly proud of you. And I'm even happier than I was before to be a fan of your videos, your bright spirit and your honesty. Keep shining, and congrats on every positive thing coming your way

+clothesencounters When you have the time, please look into Asian-American organizations in LA that do anti-racist or anti-imperialist work (etc.) and helps build and support the community. Orgs absolutely *need* support at this time, especially when it comes to things like anti-immigration reform (fact: thousands of Asians have been deported under Obama's presidency). The future is uncertain for many people, so I do encourage you and many fans to organize or at least contribute to grassroots organizations that do the bulk of the work for communities in Los Angeles. Thank you!

I felt the same way, everything seemed so media driven. I went out to vote regardless because voting wasn't all about the candidates. We can make such a huge difference by voting on the prepositions... ammunition control, death penalty, taxes... etc... There were a lot of other important things on the ballot :)

It profoundly saddened me to see so many KZbinrs unaware of the magnitude of this election cycle. This election not only defined and represented the millennials, but also changed the entire trajectory of America. It's such a pity that people are NOW realizing how dire their passivity towards American politics has impacted OUR future. What disgusts me further is the fact that people still remain clueless about our politics, but are quick to yapper away about Trump on social media (aka the bandwagoners). So, for the bandwagoners, for those who do not voice the importance of voting, and for the politically uneducated, PLEASE do America a favor and ask yourself if you truly deserve the honor and privilege to be an American citizen!

This is why the Electoral College is not the best fit for us anymore. When people live in states they know/are very sure will pull for one candidate over the other, they don't feel the responsibility to go out and vote because their vote will either not count or is "not needed". I live in Georgia, and we usually pull Red. This was my third time voting in a presidential election, and all three times my vote has ended up not truly counting because all of GA's electoral college votes went to the candidate for whom I did not vote. My voice is not heard, and so many others voices are not heard. I'm not just saying we need to get rid of the Electoral College because Hillary is winning the popular vote or because I'm a sore loser - this has happened FIVE times in our nation's history where the candidate who won the presidency did NOT get the most votes. Not to mention all the votes wasted/thrown out! It's ridiculous.
@imjennim8 жыл бұрын
THIS! The Electoral College is a joke! Thank you for explaining this. A lot of people who are criticizing, don't fully grasp the concept of the Electoral College. I commend you still for going out and voting though.

Becky B. Yeah I agree with every one of your points. The Electoral College isnt really effective when it comes to things like this. id suggest like a counter for the popular vote (cuz now its like Hillary won by 2 million more ) but there are problems with that idea too :( Reform is so hard! I dont know what to support!
@beckothy8 жыл бұрын
Umoya Gastinine I think the Electoral College should either be able to split their votes proportionally or it should be determined by popular vote. Either way, the candidate with the most votes will win, and everyone who votes will be heard.

Hi Jenn! I am a huge fan of yours, but as a young black woman watching your videos, I have to say that I am super disappointed by what I saw here. I appreciate that this was a wake up call for you, but it's really disheartening that you were politically inactive and apathetic while a white supremacist dictator rose to power. I'm disappointed that a wake up call did not come sooner, especially with the constant police brutality in our country resulting in a black man's death roughly every 48 hours. I hope you keep learning more and watching documentaries and reading important books about the terrifying realities that young people of color like you and I face today. For a lot of people, this is about survival and security. I do like watching your videos and being able to get away from the politics, but I also appreciate watching you grow, you knowing your audience grows w you, and you figuring out when it's appropriate vs not to talk about politics- and I think you did just enough. While I am disappointed that you did not vote, I think that was a very honest, raw, humbling moment to watch you confess all of that (I even heard your voice shake. "Tell the truth even if your voice shakes") and they say the best form of apology is changed behavior so I hope we can all focus our emotions and energy into positive, progressive change. Finally, I love what you said about friendship and learning to be your own person outside of your relationship. It seems like it was a very important week for you as it was for us and I loved it. Hi Jenn, I'm relieved that you talked about the election and that you were willing to admit you didn't register. Honestly, it's pretty disappointing to know that you didn't vote, considering there's so much more at stake than just the president. Your state officials were running as well and those are the people who really bring about change within this country. Nonetheless, I appreciate that you're willing to be held accountable for your actions. Wishing you well.

I feel like citizens who don't vote are often frowned upon by others. I think it's more important to do research and ACTUALLY believe their policies and views than to vote because people say so. Plus nowadays lots of people base their opinion through facebook video clips, memes, bias media rather than getting actual information so yeah I'm more disappointed in the people who voted without research and knowledge than people who didn't vote at all.

You are not only a strong female role model for me but for many other young women and men out there around the world. And by not registering or voting..you made a pretty strong statement and added to the rhetoric and statement around voter apathy. You may say that this is a "wake up call" but what good does it do if you only mention this political response ONCE on your channel? You are in a unique position with a truly global presence and could potentially make real changes and reach larger voting populations. So, what's next? What other actions will you really take? This election was a painful one. And truthfully, I'm tired of hearing empty promises and non-specific plans like those of president-elect Trump. I don't mean to harp on you but I want to really impress upon you the importance of this moment in the coming months and years outside of the imminent Trump presidency -- things like the paying attention to the Supreme Court Justices, playing an active role in the 2018 midterm elections, making donations to a specific social cause/charity, or actually speaking with your congressmen to get involved. There are real next steps but not everyone knows where or how to begin. I hope you'll choose to continue to be a strong female role model that I've always seen you to as. I'm looking forward to hearing and seeing you become more involved and to encourage others to exercise his/her right to vote.

Hey Jen, thanks again. I understand that it's a hard thing to admit that you didn't vote -- especially on a public platform. And again, I appreciate your courage but hope to see more from you than just this one post/video. I think there's a huge stigma around KZbinrs not talking politics on their channels. But I feel like if you're talking about your life...politics has a pretty large impact on a daily life. Thanks again and looking forward to hearing more about what you'll accomplish in the political sphere. I believe that you can have a positive impact on other young women and men out there who might not see the value in our political process. Whether or not we choose to be active and engaged...the political process and policies will continue to impact us all. Good luck.

Jenn, I've always admired you and been so inspired by your fearlessness in fashion and your ability to build a platfrom and a brand for yourself here on KZbin. But my goodness, after watching this video my respect for you has skyrocketed. Thank you so much for sharing your perspective on the current events taking place! I was so taken by surprise when you mentioned The 13th. As an African American who has worked with multiple cultural organizations, I have sometimes felt a lack of solidarity amongst other minorities. It always warms my heart when we acknowledge the issues within our respective communities and join hands to make the world better for everybody. You're seriously so amazing for using your influence to raise much needed awareness! ❤️❤️❤️

Jenn, thank you so much for documenting and showing this. So many youtubers with large audiences whose social influence extends far further than most politicians and often (but not always) people neglect to show these kinds of things or seldom talk candidly about political and social topics. While youtube doesn't have to be a political space, (it is predominantly a creative space,) it is essentially one of the greatest communicative tools that's ever existed. And we need to utilise well. If anything has become apparent in 2016, through Brexit and the US election, is that young people do not feel like they are being heard or that they have much say in the political sphere. Honestly, KZbin is one of the best places for our voices to be heard. Few other platforms exists on which our generation is so visible or heard and I think we need to realise that KZbin can more than just an advertising machine. It can be an incredibly powerful tool for us to communicate exactly what we think. We do have the power to reclaim the space and make our voices heard! We just have to realise it! Stay positive peeps ✌️

First time commenter here, but a long-time, faithful watcher. Honestly, I'm so disappointed to hear that Jenn didn't vote in the election. During the first day of the video, I was waiting for her to vlog about voting as part of her day. Then we reached the second day.. and I held out a little longer, hoping that Jenn had exercised her democratic rights that so many people around the world would love to have. After I heard she didn't vote... I just couldn't bring myself to watch anymore. I still love Jenn and her videos, but I guess I'm going to have a take a break from them. I guess that it's just so disappointing for me when somebody I look up does this...
@melindacapps31198 жыл бұрын
cheesylove0214 I'm really tired of hearing this from people to myself as well. you shouldn't just vote because you feel obligated to, you need to do it if you're fully informed and want to vote for a candidate. please don't be one of those people who gets all self righteous and "feels sad and disappointed" that someone else didn't vote. it sounds like a bunch of church aunties shaking their head cause I'm so lost and didn't go to bible study. please
@cheesylove02148 жыл бұрын
Hi Melinda, I don't like getting into arguments, and there is no need to make any insinuations for petty attacks. My disappointment is very personal, and I believe it is a completely valid, and nor do I need to explain it to you. However, I will now. My disappointment stems from the fact that previously, Jenn didn't care enough to vote. Voting is freedom that many take for granted - but it wasn't so long ago that women didn't even have the chance to vote. It was a right which took blood, sweat, and tears to have. As somebody I look up to, I'm disappointed that Jenn wasn't engaged enough to vote - and that she wasn't fully informed, as she admitted. I could have remained silent, which would have prevented this conversation, but because I like Jenn, I decided share my thoughts and feelings. Of course, I'm glad now that she pledged to become more proactive - after all, it's the people who elect the president, and it's the people who form the fabric of our society.
@hannahsong11068 жыл бұрын
cheesylove0214 you can't have expectations of someone then be disappointed when they are not who you think they are. That's unfair to them. Imjennim could say the same thing to her subscribers who are putting her down.
@melindacapps31198 жыл бұрын
cheesylove0214 I understand your passion and point of view and I believe that all thoughts are valid and these are all very true things. Yes these are the people that will have a big impact on issues that affect all of us. But you cannot hold other people to act as you would act and think as you would. Don't pass out disappointments and expectations for other people to see and do things as you would. She's an adult ,don't patronize her. That's how all these "I'm disappointed" comments come off as. We are adults here, we know all about how important it is to vote, we know our history, some of us just need to get to that place ourselves.
@lVlaplecrazygirl8 жыл бұрын
you know what would've been disappointing? if she hadn't voted, hadn't spoken about the election, and was apathetic to the politics around her even so. but no, jenn has shown she's learned, she's mobilized, it's like she's been politically awakened - and you're going to be upset about that? if you truly believe that her honesty, and holding herself accountable is a disappointment, then you have a very warped view on what activism really is my friend.

I've always looked up to you as an KZbinr not only because of your incredible style, but also because of your intellect. It was disappointing to hear that you chose to not even vote in the election and semi-defended that choice by saying that California would never vote Republican. Individuals around the world would KILL to be able to exercise their right to vote in any election. This right should never be taken for granted. Hopefully this election showed you that you should always be exercising that right and also be motivating your subscribers to become active global citizens. You have such a powerful voice & platform Jenn, utilize it! Complacency is never the answer.

You have no idea how AMAZING it is to see an avid KZbinr speak about whats really going on in the world and even showcase there point of view on such a platform as this. Social media has given a lot of people the opportunity to showcase the protests and outpour of action taken throughout the United States that mainstream media does not. Not to mention, I respect the fact that you took out your time to watch 13th which is a great demonstration of factual information regarding why minorities are so upset with the way the United States is being run. I have been watching for years and this blog just made me so so very happy :) Thank you

Jenn I love watching your channel, I love how genuine you are, your style and watching your adventures with Ben and friends. But I really have to say, it's quite disappointing to hear that you chose not to vote. Despite the fact that it's very predictable that California would vote for the Democrats, your vote still matters. You have such a large following, you should really use your voice to advocate to your almost TWO MILLION subscribers about the importance of voting, what it means, and the IMPACT that it has. It may seem like an unexciting experience, the physical nature of a long line for just a two minute instance of crossing off a couple of boxes on a tiny slip of paper, but a vote means so much more than that. Especially as a woman and a minority (I am Vietnamese), both you and I should be advocating the privilege and RIGHT to vote. Especially with EVERYTHING that was at stake. The things that our families and other immigrants from varying cultures FOUGHT and WORKED so hard for (freedom). I don't know about your family's story, but my family came from Vietnam, they were refugees and I grew up in a white community as the only Asian student throughout grade school. I haven't experienced extreme racial discrimination but I definitely have experienced racial profiling to some troubling degrees. In manners that seem excusable to those who are not a minority. As a woman, I experience gender stereotyping in all areas of life (personally & professionally) as I am sure you do too. My parents fled their home country after a devastating war for a better life in Canada and the same goes for my aunts and uncles in America (and most likely your parents or relatives too I'll assume). Korea and Vietnam are countries that are under a communist government and the reason our parents left to live in North America was for freedom and for the future of their children (YOU, YOUR BROTHER AND I). The easiest way for us as adults to HONOR OUR PARENTS and their fight for our freedom is to use our PRIVILEGE and RIGHT to vote. I'm similar to you in that I don't heavily follow along with politics and yes, I agree the whole electoral campaign between Trump and Hilary was a nightmare to watch, however, YOU are still a valuable part of the system. YOUR VOICE MATTERS. You had the power to advocate the importance of democracy for your viewers YOUNG & OLD. Although, I suppose this never crossed your mind. I'm 23, and I've been able to vote in two different elections in Canada but it really disappoints me when I hear that my peers are not aware of the privilege and power that they have. Remember in history class when you were young, you learned that women used to not be allowed to vote? Remember the women that fought for your right to vote? Honour them. Honour your parents, honour your family, honour immigrants, second class citizens, the LGBTQ community, those with disabilities, and all communities that face oppression who are fighting for freedom every single day in AMERICA. It's the least you could do. You say this isn't a time to express apathy, well your lack of action in this election is pure apathy at it's finest.

I was sad to hear that one of the reasons that you used to "justify" yourself for not voting is because you live in a non-swing state. That should never be a reason. Asian Americans are very underrepresented within the voter demographic and as an Asian American, I believe our voice should be heard. We go to USA to do our shopping and as mexicans we don´t dollars, we earn pesos. 1dll = 19.20pesos. Two years ago was only 12.3pesos... Wtf? Our money don´t have the same value, even with Trump victory went from 18.50 to 19.20. Extremly stressful.

Cuz I'm a fan of viewing super fun footage of make-up, clothes and trips abroad but it's getting harder for me to when my heart is breaking for the marginalized citizens of this country and abroad As a very popular public person who has such a remarkably HUGE following, I wonder what kind of impact you might make by inviting everyone in the US to at the very least vote , regardless of their politics. I read something on twitter (and can't remember exactly who posted it) but to paraphrase: I know people who voted for Hillary. I know people who voted for Trump. The people I know who voted for Hillary are not crooks or liars. The people I know who voted for Trump are not bigots or misogynistic. Please do not become intolerant of people just because of the person whom they voted. Be patient. Be kind. Let's heal from the ugly election and pray for our country. Let's all try to keep Jenn's comment section respectful.
@hlkathie648 жыл бұрын
The people who voted for Trump just chose to ignore the fact that he is a racist, misogynistic, bigoted bully. In doing so, they said that racism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia, and hate are acceptable in this country and that women, Muslims, immigrants, LGBQ, and undocumented folx don't matter. Being kind and patient is ok, but when people's lives and well beings are threatened, we can't just ignore it.
@FarlyCreates8 жыл бұрын
Kathie Tang, I completely agree with you. I'm not saying to ignore it. I'm saying to handle it in a mature fashion and create a safe forum for discussion and compassion. This is no way me commenting on your reply as to what you said, because I feel your passion of your beliefs and admire them. What I notice in comment sections most times is people attacking each other instead of dialogue. It's normal to have differing opinions regardless the topic, but it's how we treat each other that makes the difference. I completely respect your opinion as I would listening to an anti-Hillary person speak why they would not want to vote for her. Much happiness to you.
