A Walk Around Lillehammer, Norway

135 KM (90 miles) north of Oslo is the town of Lillehammer, famous for hosting part of the 1994 Winter Olympic Games. After a 2 hour train journey I arrive and set out exploring the picturesque hilly landscape, stopping by the Lysgårdsbakkene ski jumping hill and the open air museum Maihaugen.

I grew up close to Lillehammer too. And my grandparents lived there. I love it there every time i go there for vacation. Not often enough!

Have a great day. If anything I spent too long in the morning by crossing the river. If I had my time again I'd check out the view from the bridge and then head off to the church, ski slope and Maihaugen. Enjoy!

@@wl03bu Ah that's a shame! Understandable though, we have to put safety first. I was due to fly to northern Norway in March but that got cancelled too. I suppose that leaves us a bit more time for the planning stage! Hopefully you'll make it there later in the year. I look forward to hearing about it!

Great video, if all going well visiting Oslo in the spring for a few days, was looking for a day trip. Lillehammer looks like a perfect place to explore. I guess there could still be snow in early April.

Thanks, I'm glad you like the video. Yes I'm sure you'll enjoy it, it's just within reach of Oslo for a full on day trip and there's plenty to see and do. I'd imagine in April the place is just starting to thaw out following a long, harsh winter season - so likely lots of snow capped peaks! I bet it looks amazing! Fingers crossed you're able to travel by then, I'm sure you'll have a great time if you are!

Thanks, you too. PS you probably saw it on the video but I'd definitely recommend Maihaugen open-air museum if you make it to Lillehammer. When I visited it was really quiet and I really enjoyed looking around.

Hello Heidi, thanks - I'm glad you found it helpful. It was such a quiet peaceful place, I really enjoyed the day. In hindsight I would have spent a bit more time at Maihaugen, it was just like travelling back in time, especially considering how few tourists were there (I got lucky perhaps!). I was booked to go to Tromso in March but had to cancel due to the travel situation - I really hope to get there sometime in the future though. Have a great time in Lillehammer!

I hadn't heard of Svolvaer before - looks nice! I was originally planning to start in Tromso and then work northwards towards Alto and perhaps even the North Cape near Skarsvåg - hiring a car though was incredibly expensive so in the end I decided to base myself in Tromso. Where else did you visit in 2019?

if you visit maihaugen when its "open" in the summer season, you can enter the buildings, there are staff that is dressed and acts as if they lived there in the time they portray to be living in :) Maihaugen in english is May Hill :) regards one who lives and is born in lillehammer (or, as we who are native to this place say, Lillammer, pronounced Lill-ammer)

Thanks for the information namelyname, very interesting. I would love to visit again when all of those buildings in maihaugen are open and available to be explored. I still remember walking around there like it was yesterday! A mild, very quiet evening - so peaceful and relaxing, a bit like going back in time! So did I pronounce the name correctly in the video, I thought afterwards it should be pronounced "lilly-hammer"?
