I have enjoyed your walk round Mere this afternoon so much. I chose to watch it this afternoon as it is the funeral of my bestest school friend in St Michael's Church this afternoon. I have so many really happy memories as a schoolgirl at Shaftesbury High School for girls, and lived on the edge of Mere at Chance Cottage. We would ride our ponies up on the Chalk Downs behind Mere, and have wonderful gallops along the old roman road/main victorian and earlier road to London!! So many memories! I couldn't come to the funeral, I am 78 years old now and live in France, so especially good to be as close as I can be this afternoon.

I was born in Mere. The first house on the left with the steps at the side at the beginning of your video was the last house my mother occupied before she moved to West Sussex. I have many happy memories as a child in Mere. Thank you for sharing.

You got that completely wrong about the old work house . That was in castle street at the very start of the vid . And Yapps wine merchants was the milk factory . Never mind though , I still enjoyed watching it .

Thanks for your reply . The houses shown at 50.00 on the right of the road occupy the site of the old workhouse . It was quite a large building , three or four stories , I recall , and was pulled down in mid sixties . Thereafter a garage known as Castle Hill service Station occupied that site . The proprietors mother was an old lady with a strong Irish Accent and she worked on the petrol pumps every day in all weathers until well into her eighties and was always cheerful . They certainly don’t make them like that anymore . The buildings that now occupy that site reflect the architectural style of the original building and were presumably inspired by some old photos of the place .
