A Walk Through the National Museum of the US Air Force - PART 1

This is part one of a two part video, where I walk through the National Museum of the United States Air Force, aka the US Air Force Museum, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.
During my walk, I show many parts of the museum, and mention the names of most of the aircraft on display.

Thanks for this upload! It's been 25 years since my last visit. At 18:30 is a Beechcraft Staggerwing (hanging above the B-26) that my grandfather donated to the museum. It used to be on the ground with a plaque. Really cool to see it again.

National Museum of the US Air Force is a great day trip. I've been here many times because I was born in Dayton. The first time I came here was probably in 1960 when the collection was mostly outdoors in Area A on WPAFB. I can't recall the year it moved down the hill to Area B, but it's a very extensive collection now.

I'm glad the collection was moved inside, where the historic aircraft can be preserved in a climate-controlled environment. When I was growing up, the SAC Museum outside of Offutt AFB near Omaha was outdoors as well. It has also moved inside.

Just wanted to say I really enjoy your videos and museum walk thrus this one and the great lakes museum helped me thru what was the worst day of my life was very depressed my mom had just passed Way three days before and that day it had really sunk in and was not in a good state at all couldn't do anything except watch KZbin and came across this video and it kept my mind off of it and allowed me to make it through that horrible day you never k ow how your content can be a literal lifesaver for someone in need of a steady voice and alot of cool aircraft I thank you for your content please don't stop making awesome . videos

Spitfire...the first one you filmed was a photo reconnaissance version which was optimised for high flight and speed, so much they even removed the screen armour...great documentary film on the US using it - our great allies and friends.

I remember my last visit here in 1993 or 1994. We went on a school field trip here when I was in 4th grade. I remember we had toured a few of the buildings and went to the theatre to watch a documentary when MPs came in with dogs and their M16s slung around front and them telling us to evacuate. Our teachers told us there had been a bomb threat and, rather unsurprisingly, the MPs were not going to take any risks. I can't wait to go back and actually finish my tour and this is a great primer for me to get an idea of where to start and focus. Thanks!

I live in Toronto. They have a Lancaster in Hamilton that gives rides. I see it all the time flies all summer. I was going to take my Dad for a ride before he passed, but at that time I believe one ticket for a one hour flight cost 1100 dollars. Now it costs 3500/ passenger. One hour flight.

The restoration Squadron is top notch! They just finished the restoration of the Memphis Belle. They also have the parts for the last remaining XC-66, cargo version of the B-36.

Thanks for this one. I toured this on August 9th 1995, the 50th anniversary of the Nagasaki bombing. It was very moving. I was local on a business trip and had no camera or anything. Too far of a trip to go back. This will have to do for now.

Bro I went there with my grandpa who was in the airforce for some time and I had a great time. Saw airforce one, the B-2 bomber, got in a simulation of a fighter jet with my brother but he went intervened and it was a blast. I saw so much. If you want to go, you should.

I went through something like this that was a mobile exhibit in the late 50s. I don't remember if it was a B29 or 36. I remember entering the same way and there were tons of instruments.

In 2002 there was no lighting problem. They had windows that let in indirect ambient light. It was a great time. I was there in 2016 and it sucked.

I’ve been to the Darwin Aviation Museum where they have the only B 52 outside of the US and it’s awesome to see close up and which happens to be my favourite aircraft . But this museum is completely out of this world . Greetings from Melbourne Australia .

Yes Andy B I had a look at some images of Duxford and you have a lot of aircraft especially another of my special aircraft .the Vulcan .Ours is a small museum compared to Duxford but I missed visiting it when I was in England some years back .I visited the IWM at Elephant and Castle but no one told me about Duxford . By the way our B52; is under cover and takes up the whole hangar . Everytime I visit Darwin which is every year I always go to the museum to be up close to the B52 cos Darwin is my fav .place in Australia . The entrance fee is 10 dollars for me being a senior citizen and if I go back within a month it’s free .Cheers from Australia .

Charles, the Memphis Belle was only recently added to the AF Museum. It used to be in Memphis, and was moved to the museum where it underwent years of restoration, then moved to its current location. If you remembered a B-17 at THIS museum, it was not the Belle.

You got a couple of the aircraft wrong; the Dragonfly is an A-37 based on the T-37 Tweet trainer, not an A-36 and the Boxcar is C-119, the C-123 was the aircraft you showed just before it in your walk through. I still gave you a👍

About the Lancaster Canada does but so does the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. But that’s owned by the RAF so chances of getting on that one are slim

@@DaytonDistrictRailfan wel, its free. the sim version of it kind of sucks, but the realistic game mode is a good balance between sim and arcade. there is also tanks. The good thing about war thunder is that they model it kind of like DCS. the planes and tanks can get certain parts punctured and ripped off. your pilot can get shot, but you can still fly the thing home. the tanks are the same way, with pretty realistic armor. none of it is health based.

At 1:02:45, the shape of that nose told me it couldn't be an F-86 Sabre...at least without more to the story. Turns out it's a North American F-86D version in which a highly sophisticated electronic system replaced the second crewmember. The distinctive nose of the earlier F-86s was re-shaped to enclose the radar, resulting in a version called the Sabre Dog.

I have seen some videos where the planes appear static but are actually flown sometimes. You mentioned these are moved around from time to time. I presume that doesn't mean so some can get outside to fly for demonstration or to keep the parts working.

Dan Mathers, the AF Museum does not fly their aircraft; once there, they are done with flying. The museum does rearrange the planes from time to time, especially when they add another building.

If you really want to visit this museum, then go there and visit. Why wait until you happen to be there for some other reason?

Nice video! Thanks! I was just there last week and I missed a lot of that. I was looking through rose tinted glasses though, not realizing how bad it was in there, because your eyes adjust, but cameras can't (as well) and I didn't really know how bad the photos were until I got them home to look at them. It has always been hard to take pictures in there, but after seeing what the lighting can be as shown in the new hangar, I just really can't believe how bad it is. Then the catwalks you mentioned, well, I watched your NASM video and holy crap it just puts the AF museum to shame! Not only that but it has been that good for a long time! The AF museum has come a long way, however, it certainly could be a lot better! Another thing that irks me is why they need to have 4 Fantoms and 3 F111? While so many more interesting planes are hung from ceiling and hid in corners? The layout has improved since you been there, but it is still lacking. I just hope they spend less on new restorations and more on the improvement of what they have. You are right though, I mean I am 6 foot tall so I probably take it for granted but most people are staring at the bottoms of planes most times, which is ridiculous considering that is the least appealing side. Seeing the 4k Drone video after these and yeah you miss so much of the museum the way it is set up atm. Cheers M8, look forward to seeing your other videos and what is to come!

I thought there was supposed to be some artifacts form the B-24 Libarator "Lady Be Good" there. You know the one that crashed in the Lybian Desert in 1943.

There is a exhibit on the Lady Be Good - back wall of the WW2 gallery near the "Strawberry Bitch" B-24. Just a couple of display cases so this quick walkthrough may have missed it.

I believe the WASPs (Women Airforce Service Pilots) were mostly used to ferry new aircraft from place to place, as well as test aircraft and help train new pilots. They flew every type of plane used in the war, but were not combat pilots. The Russians did have women in combat roles in World War II, dubbed "The Night Witches."

Although informative, the free e are a couple of points I wish to make. I dont consider the museum to be on the outskirts, rather it is on the base proper. It was also mentioned there are a few exhibits relating prior to the US Air Force coming into it's own. In fact, there are very many, including every military aircraft and some civilian prior to Sept 1947, which the month and year the USAF became it's own military branch. Prior to that it was part of the army

jack ward, what a private individual considers to be on the base or not is irrelevant. The museum is certainly outside of the secure part of the base, and that is what is important to visitors. Used to be that the experimental planes and presidential planes were all on the secure part of the base, and visitors who were not US citizens could not see them, and visitors with disabilities also could not visit there. When I referred to the air force coming into its own, I am sure that I meant when it was just the Army flying planes, NOT during the WWII US Army Air Corps era.

rusty, yes, they are both WWII single engine fighter aircraft. Beyond that "very similar" is highly subjective.

Not completely true about F-106 SAGE auto-flight - pilot also had to adjust throttle as required during entire flight and on attack had to manually lock=on to target in radar or IR mode and had to press fire trigger before the end of the first attack countdown display. I am F-106 AWCIS tech (32251A), flight line, Castle AFB, CA 1964-68.

Klaus Møller-Nielsen The lighting is not great for photography. It's dim in general, but to the naked eye you adjust quickly. It's been that way for as long as anyone can remember.
