What happens when a Warhammer builder gets his first-ever Gundam kit from Bandai? Is this a one-off or will we be seeing more multi-part mecha on GrayPrimer?

Not sure if you noticed, but the white block on that machine gun is actually its magazine, and there are two identical parts on the hip plates of the Gundam - it's where it stores reloads, and this can be seen in the anime. One thing that Bandai does which is similar to a lot of toy manufacturers is that they have a lot of kits that use shared parts - so that Blue Destiny kit shares most of its sprues with the GM Ground Type, Gundam Ground type and EZ-8 that came out between 2017 and 2020. Those kits are uniformly excellent - I got my GM to balance on one foot on a coke bottle!

That makes it even cooler! These things are so well thought out! I figured there was a reason for the unused parts on the sprues, so that makes a lot of sense. Cheers Lorcan!

Plamo (and Gunpla in particular) is an incredibly fun sub-hobby to wargaming. You get so much plastic and so much quality for so much less money than minis. While there's no game and therefore no mechanical value to any kit, I find Bandai's pricing is way fairer for what you get than GW's prices for much less plastic. Moreover, I always love seeing mini builders carrying their skills over to plamo. You guys bring a load of variety and new blood to the hobby that we're always eager to see.

@@GrayPrimer You're very welcome. Waterslide decals and panel lining are both logical steps. For someone with mini-building experience, they should be no problem. There are also some fantastic aftermarket detail-up decal manufacturers, specifically HiQParts and Delpi Decal. Delpi is especially nice, offering holographic or pearloid versions of some decals and specialized kit-specific decal sets meant to fit perfectly with specific models.

Saw someone elses vid recently where the discussion of GW vs Bandai was brought up, because let's face it, GW is decades behind them in model tech, development and production. It's an asymmetrical comparison, but there are things Bandai does, that GW should've picked up on, such as having numbered sprues from left to right, top to bottom, being able to equip and unequip alternative loadouts on large models such as tanks and knights and having some degree of articulation on some things that you can then pin and glue into position. But no, what we have are mold lines and barely any undergating. Meanwhile Bandai tries something new every year or even more often. Their HG's get new gimmicks and even their Entry Grade kits are PHENOMENAL, utilizing sculpted shadow to give a false impression of darker tones on the details, with parts that you can pop off the sprues with your fingers. Meanwhile we've LOST customizability from GW models and can't interchange parts. It's nuts.

Quick tidbit. This is Blue Destiny Unit 3 (shortening to BDU3) and it had two sibling units. All BDUs had one specific system of importance, the EXAM system. BDU1 would be destroyed in combat. BDU2 would be stolen by an enemy faction. BDU3, unlike its two siblings, is not blue because they didn't paint it in time. It was immediately deployed to chase down BDU2. 2&3 would score mutual kills against each other. The BDU1/3 pilot would survive and pilot more Mobile Suits through the series. The BD project was an attempt by the Earth Federation faction to give their pilots powers on par with Newtypes (psychic empaths with fast reflexes) by the EXAM system, but the BDUs were made using the chained soul of a Newtype girl. The entire BD incident was the girl attempting to guide BDU1/3's pilot on a quest to destroy the BD project (which created the EXAM system that gives these pilots powers) and free the girl's soul. Lastly, the BDUs are disputed whether they are Gundams or not. A Gundam specifically refers to a prototype unit but eventually became a term assigned by Bandai to powerful prototype suits. All other non-Gundam units are designated as "Mobile Suits". This is a one direction thing. All Gundams are mobile suits, not all mobile suits are Gundams.

So, a couple of things: 1. Welcome to the hobby of "gunpla"! and great video 2. in this hobby they call them "runners," not sprues. (Just in case you talk to other gunpla enthusiasts or read comments from gunpla fans, it's good to know they use the word runner instead of sprue) 3. a big reason why I personally think gunpla's so successful is that you can model at ANY level - out of box, out of box with stickers and decals, build with panel lining, full paint job... my whole table is taken up by my current kit build right now and it's great. Im having so much fun that I probably wont get back to my fantasy army until after building/painting 4 or 5 more of these 4. Master Grade kits (MG) are my go-to kits to build. Most of the MG kits' hands are fully posable down to the fingers, and you get to build the gundam's inner frame to boot! They also tend to come with more decals too which I find fun, and the parts dont get lost in the carpet as easily if I drop them XD

Bandai Hobby is Japanese black magic when it comes to model kits, they spend so much of their profits on their tech behind the production just to flex on everybody. There's also Kotobukiya, but get ready to see some weird stuff along with the cool if you try their products. They have an entire line called FRAME ARMS, though they doo need touching up and tightening of the joints a lot more than Bandai's stuff. Recommended Real Grades are the Crossbone X1, Zeong, Unicorn, Force Impulse, or if you want to see just how hard Bandai dunks on everyone else in the scale model kit buisness, the Real Grade Sazabi, Nu Gundam, or Hi-Nu Gundam. Real Grade God Gundam just came out earlier this year so if your into old school martial arts movies, I cannot recommend it enough just based on the posability of that thing.

A kit of a tonally fitting mobile suit for someone coming from vast experience with 40k. For this has one of the darker histories behind its creation. Sure, Gunpla kits are generally depicting war machines of some flavor, but this one.... it's a bit special with the nature of its creators' closets' skeletons. Spoilers for an old Gundam video game: The EXAM system equipped suits basically pull from a comatose woman's soul/psyche to enhance ordinary pilots' performance to levels on par with the specials. She had no say in this fate, and every time the system is fired up on a machine, it hurts her soul/mind. Also, these units have a tendency to make their pilots go berserk.

Probably late to the conversation, but definitely try the larger kits, and I also mean in the same scale as 144. The Psycho Gundam stands at twice the average height of your average kit and TRANSFORMS! Even regular sized kits like the many, many forms of Zaku are great for customising for your own kind of personal army.

@@GrayPrimer another few kits I can recommend for their shelf presence is the HG Nightingale, and HG Gaplant. The latter of which, can also transform, while the nightingale is best paired up with the RG Hi-Nu Gundam; one of the best three Real Grade kits, along with the regular RG Nu Gundam, and the RG Sazabi. But if you REALLY have a pocket to burn, good luck in trying to find the 2 foot, 9 inch tall Neo Zeong. (And/Or Narrative Version.) Otherwise, if you want a simpler kit to mess with, the original High Grade GM is worth about $10.

Oh, I also recommend the Loto Double pack, mainly because of how dinky they are, and all parts can fit on 3 runners each.

Its good to see people branching out into new hobbies. I myself love gundam and have been really wanting to get into warhammer, but it seems to be a bit too expensive for my liking. Any tips?
@GrayPrimer

There are lots of entry points to Warhammer, from small skirmish games like Blood Bowl and Kill Team, to large-army war games like Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Age of Sigmar. It really depends on what grabs you from the lore, miniatures, or rule systems. You can check out www.warhammer-community.com/downloads/ for some free rules, or have a look on KZbin for how-to-play videos for each of the games. If you are drawn to the larger scale games like 40K or Sigmar, which will of course be more expensive, you can save a lot of money by investing in the large launch boxes that are released from time to time. Right now, Skaventide is on the shelves for Age of Sigmar. Still a lot of money, but a massive saving over buying individual kits.

HG is pretty beginner friendly, wait till you try MG, RG or PG gundam models, they're way more detailed and has much better articulation. btw, the letters means EG = Entry Grade, HG = High Grade, MG = Master Grade, RG = Real Grade, PG = Perfect Grade and they basically ascend in quality like this EG < HG < MG = RG < PG, with PG being the most detailed but also the biggest scale. EG, HG, and RG comes in 1/144 scale, MG in 1/100 scale while PG is in 1/60 scale.

The pronunciation of gundam is really throwing me off, but I'm still glad to see your excitement and enjoyment with your first gundam kit. This is the only video of yours I've seen so I hope you've had more good experiences with gundam kits, and maybe checked out the Real Grade line, or the Perfect Grade line

Lol if different colors on one runner is amazing to you wait till you see the kits that have multiple colors on one part like some of the figures with multiple color eyes or rg kits with fully molded articulated parts you don’t have to assemble to get articulated they come out of the sprew assembled
