As always, wonderful breakdown of gear and it’s uses. I rented a Crane 2 last weekend to film an engagement story film and it was a champion. Letting it go today is going to be so hard... but not if I win one! Anyways Matt, keep being brilliant! Your humor and personable nature make it a joy to watch your content.

Fantastic job, Matt. Nailed exactly what's so mundane about most (sometimes even big) channels' reviews of products and then show off exactly how it should be done. Hope the views can accurately reflect the quality of work put into this.

Awesome video Matt!!! Definitely hang on to that glidecam as a backup but I've completely switched over to gimbals now. My only issue is that remember these are pieces of complicated electronics...they can and do brake/malfunction so always keep a spare or glidecam around if you rely on these for certain shots. Thanks for the shoutout as well!!!

There's no shortage of people giving opinions online which is why I usually avoid longer videos. Mostly they end up being a waste of time. However, the information you provided was so useful that I didn't realize this was a 30 minute video until 20 minutes in. Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences. I'm actually going to reconsider some purchasing decision I was about to make for my new film company.

Just a little tip to balace this crane faster - write down the markings on each axis for every different setup. When i setup my crane i take out my phone, read on what position each axis has to be and im done within 30sec. Same if you switch lenses. With the glidecam you also have to think about the counter weight when you switch lenses - shifting the sled back and forward wont help you if you go from a heavy to a lighter lens.

Yup! I have photos on my phone of all the setting numbers. :)

Hello Matt! Thank you so much for the detailed review! I' m a owner of a flycam and I used for my last 3 years. But like you, I tried the amazing crane 2 and like you I really like. One of the major problem though, in my opinion, is the robotic sensation expecially on the pan movements. But for all they found the same problem, I higly raccomended to buy the dual handle! When I tried this accessory I don't belive how much improve the smoothes of the shot but for me, after I tried in that setup, I can't use without. In conclusion the thing that I don' t like so much is the way like the gimbal hold the camera. On this point I like a lot more how the ronin hold the camera; if you infact try to run with the crane you will find a lot of shakiness due to the fact that this gimbal hold the camera only on one side!! For me this the most cons of this gimbal and I hope that dji with the ronin-s can resolve this problem. Thank you again to take the time to do this awesome review! See you!

A lot of good points here, thank you! One tip for viewers that might be in the market for the smaller CraneV2: I have it and it comes with a 1/4 thread in the bottom of the grip. I have added a Manfrotto table tripod in there and get all the advantages of a stand that you have pointed out and which I fully agree on.

I have the crane 2 and like every 3 axis gimbal I use it doesn't look as organic as my Movi. I wish Freefly would come out with a small hand held gimbal. Their systems are SOOO good!
@whoismatt
@whoismatt 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Philip! Freefly definitely has their look down, but I feel like they are really pushing for the higher-end cinema space and not necessarily targeting solo filmmakers that want to spend less than $1K on a gimbal. It took about 1 year longer than I thought it would for DJI to announce the Ronin-S. :)

Matt, I just love your honest, down to earth review. I have seen so many reviews of gimbals and all of them are so similar and it almost seems like reviewers tend to soften the deficiencies in all those gimbals. I can't help but think the reviewers try to give softer reviews so they can thank manufacturer for free gift. I agree with you once gimbals become lighter, smaller, painless to assemble, man, I will gladly pay extra but I would know what I pay for.

Matt, awesome video as always. Not going to name any names here, but there's been a flood of sponsored videos on the Crane 2 that make it seem like it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, and as someone who is about return a Crane Plus, you definitely were way more honest about Zhiyun's cons and pointed out some issues I even experienced while filming concerts. However, I'm still hoping to win the giveaway, as my biggest problem with the Plus was that it can't quite handle the weight of my equipment, and 7 lbs would be perfect. I don't watch long reviews often, but whenever I see one you post, I know it's gonna be worth my time. It definitely was for your GH5 review from awhile ago, the same applies here. From a current subscriber, looking forward to viewing more!

Bro I love your content. You probably won’t remember me but we met years and years ago (2011) in Panama City Beach at Beach Reach spring break trip. I am from Michigan and our groups hit it off. Anyway, I’m still in ministry and have been a kids pastor since 2012 in Michigan and now I’m Tulsa Oklahoma. Started getting into video as a hobby and was something I could use for the church but it’s quickly progressed into corporate, wedding, special event type stuff. Just shot my first wedding yesterday and everything went very smooth. I will say I go to your channel first anytime I have a question about something. You explain and teach so well. God’s using you in multiple areas! I entered to win the Crane 2 as that thing is a beast for run and fun cinematic stuff. Keep up the great work bro!

Thanks for the video. I have a Crane 2 now (I still have my Glidecam) and I use the focus motor and it takes no extra time to put the camera on, and it's super light. "Much like a tender lover, you're going to have to learn how to touch it, caress it, and hold it ..." rejuvenated my listening at the end of the video. LOL. Great review with real working information and not just another "best of" sampling of clips often found on youtube. I'm currently purchasing a Crane 2 and was also concerned with balancing on the fly during hurried set ups as mentioned. One of my studio still cameras presented a solution: Lock your Manfrotto plate in place and add a double sided tape and guide strip with etched indicators for lens length and balance points. We'll see if it works! Thanks again! Definitely a new subscriber!

I am saving up for a Crane 2 to use in TKD for use at tournaments, for family use (I am an uncle 6 times and those kids can move) and for cinematic videos so I can skip using a slider. This thing looks amazing. I tried out a cheaper glidecam (60 bucks) and was not impressed. It takes a ton of work and dedication to get good with glidecams. So i returned it and gonna save up for one of these, or maybe the smaller crane v2. Good video, I appreciate the honest (and lengthy) review.

One of the best reviews I have seen online , I have a glider and a Ronin M , Ugh if that M would just work like its supposed to.. and I am just not good with the gliders.. this looks like the good middle ground.

Love your enthusiastic style ! I have to use the dual handle option with a heavy & long Sony PXW Z90.( Otherwise it's like fishing for 50kg Marlin!). The downside of the Crane 2 is the lack of vertical damping. So I often re-shoot takes with a DJI Osmo Mobile.....

Ironically I went from a crane 2 to a glidecam, it's just easier and reliable

i am thinking the same way. just about to purchase a glide cam 4000. reason being, and you can tell me if i am wrong, once the glide cam is set up for your camera and 1 lens that you use all the time, it's about releasing the plate, leave it on the cam and just pop it back and it's already balanced? does that make sense?

I love my crane 2! I use it with a Nikon D610 and the Tamron 45mm f1.8 VC. I mounted a Feelworld monitor on a clamp at the bottom and that has proved a great placement for me since I do like to do "vortex" shots every now and then. I also have the focus motor mounted, which makes changing lenses a pain (which I don't do much) but is very nice, all the same.

Brilliant Video again Matt! Love your humorous but educational style. I like you had the Glidecam HD 4000 for many years but over time it has slowly started to destroy my back and so I changed to a combination of Glidecam and Crane V2 so I feel the same way as you in that the Glidecam does offer you more fluid natural motions where as with the Crane you can shoot for longer and the ability to use just one hand allows you to get so many awesomely creative shots. Great comparison, thanks again.

Awesome video Matt!! This was great cause i also have the Ronin M and Glidcam 4000, using the Ronin M was a pain in the ass with the lame stand but i found an ok fix! They released a ring design to replace the handlers and you can buy the Movi Pro feet for like 20 bucks and now you don't need that lame stand that is never in a convenient spot when you need it. :) Ive been looking at this Zhiyum for a bit and this has been the best review i found yet!! Thanks again for another great review!

Great video (as usual) ... keep bringing us the goodness. One thing I want to point out though. You mentioned that if Sony adds the same awesome autofocus on the A7sIII as the A9 and the newer A7s, you'd buy new autofocus lenses. Well, get ready !!!! Although the touchscreen capability on all the new Sonys are lackluster, the "touch to focus" works VERY well with my current gimbal - and I'm sure that it will appear on the A7SIII (if not even better) as the trend suggests and you're going to LOVE IT. Try borrowing and A7RIII from a friend just to see how it feels and I bet you will be overjoyed.

Hey Matt! I heard you can use you iPhone mounted to the top of your camera through the “ play” app to enable motion control. I.e. lock on a target and start walking and the gimbal follows the target. Also, just got their shoulder rig accessory I can send you a picture of if you want. It’s more of a way to keep you going if you get tired. I’m testing the ability to used the glide cam within the shoulder rig.

Hey Braden! I didn’t mess with their app much other than changing settings. From what I’ve seen, the follow focus is a little janky. For audio I just use in camera audio when on the gimbal. When I’m on my glidecam I’ll sometimes use it with a mic on top too.

If I win the crane I will shoot all kinds of street life in upstate NY. I’m a military video journalist on the way to Syracuse for a year of film school. I am trying to save up to buy my own equipment and I recently bought a glidecam (wieldy, a Chinese version) and this thing is DIFFICULT! Not giving up on it because the B-Roll I see other people get is incredible but I could really use the Crane.

Great review. I use a Ronin-M + a7sii + G-Master 24-70 w/ AF + Atomos combo. Weight kills me by the end of the day but I manage to get the shots. Only still suffer through because I love having a spot to mount the Atomos (for clarity of picture and beautiful ProRes recordings). Now that I've seen the Zhiyun/handle/stand in action, it has my attention. Thanks for all the hard work you do bro!

So Matt, the Crane 2 is a beginners glidecam... Glad to see that the flip out screen on the GH5 will work on the Crane 2, and on very low to the ground shots with a glidecam. Great video, very nice and comprehensive 👍🏻 (Glidecam HD4000 is $800, Crane 2 is $900 over here, wonder what the new DJI will cost 🙄)
