@@imjennim I used to feel this way about sports- I'm pretty bad at most team sports, so it made me intimidated to go to the gym! "I was so afraid of failure." That was so me growing up too! I don't know if it had to do with growing up in an Asian household, but I said no to many opportunities because I was so afraid of not being good at it the first time around or not "looking good" while I tried it out. Definitely got way too in my head about caring what other people think. Also Jenn, don't be so hard on yourself about the weight gain! Some of the things my therapist told me when I was especially self-deprecating was re-framing my thoughts into something positive. So while you may think about gaining 15 lbs, you could also think that you're fortunate to even have the opportunity to gain weight or "damn, that was some good banana bread" and think of it as a momento of all the great baking you've done :D

I oftentimes don't feel comfortable inside my body but whenever I am dancing all of these negative thoughts go away. I am not a professional dance by any means nor do I think I am especially good but whenever I dance I just let loose. It's a form of meditation for me and it brings me so much joy and happiness. I am glad that you are gradually finding you way and dealing with your fear of dancing.

The more we all do our best the faster this will be over --- stay safe, strong, and humble.

First off! No matter what, gaining weight is not an inherently bad thing. I think that’s really important in the way we talk about ourselves. ❣️ Secondly, given the current situation, the LAST thing anyone should be worried about is their weight! We are all so incredibly stressed and we need to allow ourselves to deal with it however we can - whether you're feeling more or less active, productive, eating healthier or not. It doesn’t matter as long as you’re able to keep your mind healthy first.

As a dancer and perfectionist, I totally resonated with your talk on being too scared to do something because of the fear of failing. In terms of dancing, I think the most important part truly is (as you said) confidence and finding what the song or meaning of the movement is for you. Because yes you could be the most flexible or nail all the hardest moves, but if you don't move with your heart, soul, and meaning, it becomes just dance moves and not a fun thing to do or in other ways a language to communicate what you are feeling. ✨

10000% agree. It's literally a global pandemic... we need to relax and stop thinking that gaining a few pounds is a bad thing. Weight gain is not a good or bad thing-- it's simply what it is. We need to be healthy, but there is a fine line between stigmatizing it and being aware in order to make healthy choices when possible. We're human, let's be kind and focus on what is truly important.

Hi Jenn! Thanks again for the amazing video. I love how you are always so relatable by being upfront about your insecurities and challenges in your life. I have also been baking a lot of banana bread. If there was such thing as "the fruit of the year", bananas should definitely be THE fruit of 2020. With that said, I have also been struggling with insecurities regarding weight gain. I just want to say that you still look amazing as always! Prior to the pandemic I used to get my lashes done every fortnight; I wish I could pull off the no falsies look the way you do! In terms of dancing, your reflection on deep-rooted insecurities make a lot of sense. I think that a big part of dancing is the flow of movements, and that flow comes with being comfortable enough to let loose. I also think it's important to realise that a lot of really good dancers have struggled with the same insecurities that inhibited them from achieving that flow. But remember, practice makes perfect! I have recently started playing this online card game again, one that I used to be really good at. There's a competition going on that qualifies players for world championships, and I kept losing and losing. I told a friend about how frustrating it was to see other competitors win effortlessly, and my friend kindly reminded me that a lot of them have been playing for a lot longer than I have. My friend also reminded me of to not forget to have fun. I think his advice may be relevant to your situation with dancing. I am confident that you will achieve anything you put your mind to! xx
