I’m in the process of switching from animating for a company to full time freelance/ for myself, I want to learn grease pencil and kiss Adobe goodbye, and you make it seem easy. But when I open blender I have no clue at all what to do lol. I can draw in it, but animating in it feels weird for some reason

It can be so intimidating and I’ve had to find work arounds for some things, hoping it clears up some of the confusion around using it though!

I told my therapist last week that I was really inspired by your videos and also how you value time off just as much as working. Thank you for not pushing the grind until you burn out mentality that a lot of people seem to follow. Wanted to ask- what would the most essential softwares be to learn for 2D animation? Cheers! Any software is good software as long as you make stuff. You can make animation with paper and pencil, with a tablet, drawing tablet ecc... here is a little list of good options that are free or very cheap: phone: flipaclip ipad: procreate pc: Krita, Blender, clip studio paint... these are all very good for traditional animation, Blender in particular is becoming really good at everything.

Thank you so much! I’m so glad you enjoy the videos, it’s definitely been a work in progress to have a bit more of a work/life balance. For software it doesn’t matter too much - you can build your animation skills and then learn any program you like. For a free software id say blender is great, amazing community who are super helpful. If you’re looking for paid software there’s anything from TVPaint and toonboom (very expensive) to more reasonably priced stuff like clip studio paint EX and Moho (probably just use this for rigs, not too sure about the frame by frame stuff). Rough animator is ok and only £5 it’s also on the iPad. For iPad apps I’d say callipeg and procreate dreams (when it comes out November 22nd). For android I think flipaclip is on there too. Overall I’d recommend blender for free stuff as you can do 2D and 3D. TLDR - if you have animation skills or want to build them, it doesn’t matter what software you learn with because you can always try something new later and get to know another program if you end up working in a studio etc. freelance/personal projects you can use whatever you like! Hope this helps!

I’d love to see you walk through procreate dreams if you consider getting it! You’re such an awesome creator, and I look forward to your future videos!
