you can choose to keep all of your drops when you die in the world editor in the game.

Depending on where you die, yes it can still take a while to get back. i usually get around this particular inconvenience by carrying a flame altar with me and when I suspect things might get a little harry or just in case, I put down a flame altar simply to fast travel back there if I die. You can always deactivate the altar later to keep the spot open for another to use in the same way.
