I'm always stunned by the enormous dedication of Julliard students. Future employers- orchestras, ensembles, etc. recognize the discipline and superior training of students who make it through the grueling schedule.

Hi Haji, I went to Juilliard in the mid 1980's. You are SO lucky, you get a PT! We were on our own back then! I believe Michael White still teaches theory there. He was one of my favorites! The recording of the string quartet is the same piece I worked on with my quartet! Joel Krosnick was our coach. I remember the other violinist being very cranky! He came from France and stood in the room in front of all of us (including Joel) and told us we were all losers. He stormed out of the room and never came back. Do you still have jerks like this at Juilliard? FYI, The year I left, they started building the dorms. All freshman had to stay at the 63rd street YMCA. ☹️

Wow that is so cool!!!I played one of Professor White’s new compositions with my quartet last year! Luckily everyone I have met and worked with at Juilliard has been very kind! And the thought of the entire freshman class staying at the YMCA makes me laugh thank you so much for sharing!!

@@HajiKim Wow, you performed Mr. White's composition! I should email him and say hello. I had to take an English class while at Juilliard. Our teacher was Korean, I wish I could remember her name? Unfortunately, she could barely speak English!

Congratulations on your admission to Julliard, and it was lovely to hear you practice. I played cello as a child/teen for about 8 years, but then college and life intervened. I’ve recently been considering cello lessons again and started to looking for an instructor in my area. Given that my old cello is at my parents’ house across the country, I’m planning to rent first and then eventually buy another cello. Any suggestions on reputable dealers (anywhere in the country) for cello sales?
@HajiKim

Thank you! It’s hard to say, I think there are many great local instrument shops in every state. In California, I often go to Roland Feller and Ifshin. Perhaps you could look up local violin shops (they are usually called violin shops for some reason 😆) in your area, and try out a few cellos? During your trial period you can take them to different musicians/luthiers and ask if it seems like the instrument is worth the price. Hope this helps!

How many hours do you practice a day?
@HajiKim
@HajiKim 3 жыл бұрын
Someone told me that if you practice 1 hr a day you get worse, 2 hrs you stay the same, 3 hrs you improve, and 4 hrs you improve a lot! I try to practice 3 hrs a day on my solo rep!
@ellendietrich
@ellendietrich 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that answer! I am 17 years old an practice 4 hours a day and the people around me say that I should got to a university and study the Cello. Right now I started to play the 4th Movement of the Shostakovich Sonata and I started the Elgar Concerto. I already played the 1st Haydn Concerto and the Brahms Sonata in e-Minor. To name a view pieces of my repertoire...

Would you say that I should study the Cello?
@HajiKim
@HajiKim 3 жыл бұрын
Cool pieces!! It’s really admirable that you can focus and practice for 4 hrs a day! I would say that if you love music and playing the cello, you could seriously consider pursuing it further! Studying at a conservatory is very inspiring and helps you have deeper knowledge on the arts and music. That being said, it’s also entirely possible to study something else and continue getting lessons/playing music on the side! Do whatever you think will be the most rewarding to you 😊
