"It's a nice mid-tier complication for those who are looking to step up their game but can't quite commit to an 80.000 dollar perpetual calendar from Lange." Good guy Lange making watches for us people in the slums.

It amazes me how some people waste $30,000 on a solid gold Submariner when they could get this instead
@yasminebubteina7 жыл бұрын
Cameron Gupta those are the people that just want it in solid gold because its a Rolex gold watch .. people who look at this a.lange are people who value the watch and want that complex conversation . This watch is a conversation piece not a gold Rolex . This is how you can tell the difference between those who are just wanting a Rolex because it's a Rolex and people who want something more . It is nice to have a Rolex in gold because they are beautiful but trust me only those who understand horology will value the a.lange over the Rolex . I myself own a Rolex because it is my first Rolex so it has that value to me as a conversation piece but I do not think I would find myself picking up a Rolex again any time soon .
@rlsjunior7976 жыл бұрын
Cameron this is definitely a better watch than a gold sub. That said the gold sub can be worn daily, I guess technically you could wear this everyday but it’s not as durable as the sub.

36k IS an awful lot of money but when you think of the breathtaking quality of this watch and the beauty of the movement- all of which have had 100s of hours of work put into them it begins to make sense, oh and not to mention the R&D that has gone into the movement design. I know I could never justify buying one though, certainly not yet😉
@MrSoymilk26 жыл бұрын
It's an annual calendar, relatively low beat, and over 10mm thick. Lange is a jeweler and not a true horological master house. For $30k you can get a JLC fully perpetual calendar, with a 28800 beat and 9.4mm thick in the same gold. That's a vastly better buy horologically speaking. The finish is a little worse but the mechanics are vastly better.

Lange does some of the best finishing in the world. Also that's a pretty dam good price. Love it! 👌

Cara is the best and seems the most genuine out of the entire Hodinkee bunch. However, I can't help but chuckle when people over at Hodinkee constantly act like you're only serious if you're buying an "$80,000" watch... I get that the implied vibe they really mean is, "this $36,000 watch will do for the peasants, but you're not at grail level until you finally get serious at pay $80,000."
@GarrySkipPerkins7 жыл бұрын
I literally have no idea what you are talking about. She had the chance to wear a killer watch for a week, would you not do this? She made her best pitch to the $36k watch-buying set that she could. You need to understand that this is how they get paid. They are not looking down on you. If you think that everyone is looking down on you, please see a licensed psychologist. That feeling has nothing to do with Hodinkee.
@valebliz7 жыл бұрын
I kinda agree. Hondinkee has a posh and upstate vibe i can't really like. Just look at the pricing on their shop... everything is about 50% more than it should be. I guess they went where the money are. Still they know their stuff.
@mannycalavera23356 жыл бұрын
Hodinkee come off as quite elitist. Even to those blessed enough to be able to afford nice watches. It doesn't really make all that much sense. How many of the 80k views on this video are by people who are able to afford this watch? Hell, how many of them are by people who have even ever held a watch in this price category?

1:14 Why is the 4 blue?
@MrAristaeus6 жыл бұрын
My guess would be that that is a reflection of a hard directional light source (like a light bulb) reflecting off the painted numeral and and filtered/diffuser through the ‘non reflective’ sapphire crystal of the glass. The only reason it is localised to the “4” numeral giving it the appearance of being blue, is that the light source is itself small. If you look closely you can see the outline of (most likely) the same light source on the Moon disc. The rest of the (exquisite) dial has a matte finish and so minimises any reflections.

ostentatious means differently things to different people
@GarrySkipPerkins7 жыл бұрын
No, that word has a very specific meaning. That meaning has no relationship to money, but rather implies vulgarity. A simple, expensive watch is fine. A gaudy, large piece of garbage is ostentatious, even if it is inexpensive.

imho, her pronunciation is within an acceptable range, their CEO Wilhelm Schmid, sometimes pronounces Lange as just "lang" on other occasions he pronounces it as "lang-gey", are we saying the CEO does not know to pronounce his own company name? For every "zoon-neh" I have heard, there is a "zoon-ner", lets not waste time trying to be grammer police.

Those geneva stripes looked suspect
@GarrySkipPerkins7 жыл бұрын
Why?
@felixarbable7 жыл бұрын
if you pauuse at 00:8 you can see above the N where the stripes end they cut into the bevel around the rachet wheel. usuually means they are cuut too deep. its odd lange dont normally make that mistake. to be fair its still 100 times better than modern patek stripes. if youu wanna see good geneva stripes from a big company you have to go back about 100 years to stuff like this watchpics.com/watches/others13/Mediums/mpatekpw.html here is a good view watchpics.com/watches/others13/Mediums/mpatekpwm08.jpg
@felixarbable7 жыл бұрын
you can compare that to a modern patek with horrible cnc finishing and aweful bevels ( notice the machine vibration marks on the bevels and how deeply cut everything is) watchpics.com/watches/others04/Mediums/mpatekm71.jpg the geneva stripes on the top right are really bad way to deep and cuut right into the bevel, this shows they arnt doing geneva stripes properly anymore watchpics.com/watches/others04/Mediums/mpatekm11.jpg
@felixarbable7 жыл бұрын
honestly though in the case of the lange its not too bad they still have the best finishing of all the big companies, might just be a quality control issue or manufacturing fault with this particular watch. although ill be keeping my eye out for this stuff from now on. i hope they dont let their standards slip!

Some people would rather save the 40 odd K difference for the sake of pushing a button once a year on Feb 28th! (With a year off every 4 years) I certainly would, also apart from JLCs most perpetuals I have seen have quite thick cases. Agree that a perpetual calendar is one of the ultimate complications though!

Why do all westerners call hindu numerals as arabic numerals?
@lsamoa6 жыл бұрын
Good point. That's because this system was introduced to Europe from India by Arabic mathematicians. Arabs actually use different numbers ( ० ۱ ۲ ۳ ۴ ۵ ۶ ۷ ۸ ۹). The former are usually referred to as Western Arabic numbers in the Western world, while the latter are called Eastern Arabic here.
