When I drink bourbon, I don't want sulfur in the conversation. So thank you for the review.
@davidmeier18116 күн бұрын
Used wine barrels have sulfur sticks burned in them to prevent mold. I think it would be better to put a bit of vodka in the barrel and that will prevent mold and not leave the sulfur (But adding vodka would kick it out of the bourbon category).

Angels Envy is my girls favorite too, along with Eagle Rare. Here in Australia we haven't seen either of these bottles but the straight Anglrs Envy in Port barrels is $100 minimum. So thanks for giving us some insight into their other produxys.

Ugh bought the AE Triple Oak when it first hit at FOMO retail +10. It has been my most regretted bottle in 2024. Now I'd never buy the SB at 150 but I do love the AE Rum Cask Finished Rye, it is the bomb.

I think if you want to spend $60 it is best to get a store pick, especially if they will give you a free sample first. I always spend $22 to $40, and all my rebuys are made in 3 places- Clermont, Louisville and Owensboro KY. Your results will probably be different.

I got caught up with an AE sherry cask in a bundle deal for a bottle that I wanted. There's a funky/nasty taste on the backend that I couldn't quite describe... maybe that's Sulfur. I haven't gone back to the bottle.

The triple oaked should be. The sherry finish was a single barrel in TX, but I am sure you can find something comparable there.

Great show as always! I have a question on a different note. I've recently opened a bottle of Early Times Bottled in Bond which I found to taste different from the last bottle which I had recently finished. Is it possible that Sazarac is releasing offerings with its own distillate now? Again, great show as always! Cheers!
@BourbonRealTalk4 күн бұрын
It was 2025, so since the purchase happened in 2020 it is possible that Sazerac has run out of the brown forman liquid they purchase with the brand, but I don't know for sure.

Great review Randy! Is there a particular distillery that you taste sulphur? I remember you mentioning that from the 2024 GTS. What are they doing differently that causes that profile?
@BourbonRealTalk3 күн бұрын
It is in whiskey finished in barrels that come from Europe. They treat them with a sulphite solution before shipping to prevent microbes from growing, but I can taste it and others can't. The 2023 GTS tasted like potting soil to me, not sulpher.

I tend to like double oaked bourbons so my guess is I would like this triple oaked. I wonder how it compares to Woodford's double oaked or OF1910. Unless I am misunderstanding what you said I am not sure how the triple oaked can be classified as bourbon. You said 3 different types of oak but none were American oak.
@davidmeier18116 күн бұрын
The law for bourbon does not require it to be American oak. Just white oak. All 3 mentioned are white oak species.
@BourbonRealTalk6 күн бұрын
WDO and OF1910 are double oaked, but some of the oak was toasted and not just charred. AE Triple Oaked used barrels from 3 different species of oak, but I am unsure if any of them are toasted. The profiles are very different. It is also a commonly held misconception that the definition of bourbon requires American oak, but it is not true. Oak from anywhere in the world qualifies.
@Glock22016 күн бұрын
@ Thank you. I thought I heard one time that it has to be American Oak.
@davidmeier18116 күн бұрын
@@Glock2201 It is often stated on distillery tours, but the law just states white oak. The thing is new French oak is about 4-5 times more expensive and as Randy said has 5-10 times the tannin level which can make the spirit "over oaked" if not used carefully. Hungarian oak is also more expensive. American oak is typical, but not required.
@BourbonRealTalk5 күн бұрын
@@Glock2201 I hear industry experts say it all the time in major media publications, but it isn't in the standards of identity.

An unfinished Angel's Envy? 🤔 My experience with finished whisky has been very slender, but almost universally unpleasant. Apparently my palate prefers whisky without the stuff that finishing brings in...or maybe I've just not tried enough finished whiskies. 🙂

That's the harshest review from Randy in some time, maybe the harshest I've seen him give. I am not the sulfur super taster so maybe it'd be a good one for me but I think I'd rather buy the triple oak as I think it'd fit my pallet and seems like a solid value at taht price point...

Ill be honest, after trying the triple oak multiple times, i have nothing nice to say about it. Smells like a whiteboard marker, tastes like tv dinner corn, the finishes dont come through, and the price is way too high imo. Id take the wt 101 every time.
