You nailed it - Felix would NOT have been a close friend if Oliver hadn't been a "tragic" poor boy - the whole family takes in waifs like poor dear Pamela, and Felix especially likes to see himself as a good guy, yet it's commented on many times how there have been a number of friends "for the year", then he drops them when he gets bored/they pay attention to his sister instead of him/ it becomes work. Oliver cleaning his room annoyed him and he stopped calling and didn't invite Ollie to the pub like usual, so Oliver got back in his good graces by crying his dad died. Ollie pegged them all and gave them exactly what they wanted.

here’s some of my favourite details in this film: Oliver missed when throwing the rock in the river because his dad wasn’t actually dead. at the dinner table after Felix’s death, each person represents a different stage of grief. Elspeth and Venetia foreshadow their own deaths, Venetia overflowing her glass of red wine, and Elspeth choking on her food. Venetia compares Oliver to a moth, drawn to shiny things aka the family wealth, Saltburn. Felix’s rock is the only one that Oliver touches in the end scene. and one thing people seem to forget, Oliver is narrating the story throughout, and we know he’s a liar. he tries to make it seem as though his actions were all premeditated and driven by economic resentment, but it was about his obsession with Felix. i absolutely love films that make you think.

I really like the movie and your reaction. Some of the things you were saying really hit on some of the points I made myself while gathering my thoughts about the movie. For me, Oliver's intense fixation on Felix drives the narrative. I don't quite agree with a lot of people's opinion that Oliver's actions were money-driven or power-hungry. From the outset, his schemes were just to get Felix's attention and friendship. He is fueled by this infatuation, which later turns into obsessive love. At Oxford, Oliver, despite being intelligent and diligent, feels like an outsider. Felix, with his privileged background, captivates Oliver, as his carefree charm effortlessly garners affection. Felix's 'compassion' becomes a tool for Oliver, who exploits it. Just as you said beneath Felix's seemingly pure kindness, a condescending aspect lies. He and his mother enjoy the role of heroes in the lives of the less fortunate, dressing and feeding them almost as pets but also casting them aside when they become 'inconvenient.' Oliver strategically adopts a persona he knows will attract Felix's attention and friendship. He knows Felix is not going to give him what he wants, so he seeks it in other ways (Bathtub, Venetia, Farleigh, and even the grave). The turning point arrives when Felix, attempting to reconcile Oliver with his family, inadvertently exposes Oliver's lies. Realizing the irreparable damage to their relationship, Oliver chooses to end Felix. In his mind, it's preferable for Felix to be d3_4d than to be rejected and unable to be close to him. He genuinely regrets k1_ll1ng him (the grave scene is a perfect way to portray it), and his way of coping is shifting the object of his obsession from Felix to Saltburn. He seeks solace in owning fragments of Felix's life, using Saltburn as a vessel to chase Felix's ghost and live with the weight of remorse - a self-imposed punishment, I think that a lot of people forget that Oliver is an unreliable narrator. So, his monologue from the beginning to the end is him trying to convince himself that his actions leading to Felix's d3_4th were justified ill leave a quote from Emerald that i find rezlly interesting. "The happiest ending [for Oliver] would of course be with him and Felix married, living there together,” she continues. “I think that in his mind, and in my mind, that would be the dream. That dream is not possible. So, therefore, this is the best of a bad bunch of options.

The party is a Midsommer’s night Dream themed and Oliver is supposed to be Puck the mischievous fairy and Felix is supposed to be Icarus who flew too close to the sun ( which is not part of the play)

This is a terrific film. Beautifully shot obviously. As a satirical dark comedy, it’s incredibly smart. Shocking, yes. But very entertaining.

this film had to sit in my brain for a day for me to realize i actually really liked it. of course some of the scenes grossed me out lol but i do really like the plot after thinking on it more.

All of those scenes were absolutely necessary. Cinema has simply become too commercial so no one’s used to seeing visceral behaviour on screen anymore. The big problem with the film is the script was just too simple. The film is not as smart as it wants to be. However, it should be admired for *trying*.

that was my first reaction but the more times i watch it (5 now lol), the more i think the film wasn't actually trying to be all that smart in the first place. i think if you read it as primarily a class/social mobility commentary, then yeah, it doesn't come across as nearly as important as it thinks it is. but i think reading the movie as more being about desire and obsession, with class and race simply being elements of the story that impact the relationships, makes it feel a lot less pretentious and a lot more earnest. just my opinion though! could talk about this film for ages haha

@@andreygirl I see what you’re saying. But for me, it fails on all of those fronts. I don’t think it really leaned into race really at all (thank god, there’s simply no reason for the film to do so and it would have been embarrassing, in my opinion). It does lean into class in a very sort of overt kind of way - honestly, I think that’s really in part just due to Fennell’s own background. She has glimpses of that world and it probably inspired where her creative energy flows. Much like setting the film in 2006, when she would have been that age at that kind of institution. So I was okay with all of that. My problem was actually what you mention. The film is about obsession and desire. But ultimately it really fails to hit the mark, in my opinion, in any real way. Like sure, we can all say how gross it is that he drinks his bath water (oooh!) or whatever, but it just never feels more than superficial. A film like The Piano Teacher - that *really* deals with desire and obsession. If drinking bath water is too much for people’s gentle eyes, then that will blind them. But a film needs to operate on the level of The Piano Teacher if it’s being serious about exploring that kind of thing. And I’m not saying a film has to be gross to be impactful. Call Me By Your Name, for example, is in my opinion a modern classic in how it deals with infatuation, identity and coming of age. My other problem with the film is structural, though. It’s just not a very good psychological thriller. The story beats are all quite obvious. And in a sense, this is really the film’s greatest sin. It doesn’t have to be arthouse - there’s no requirement for a film to be that. But it does have to deliver on its own intentions to surprise if that’s what it wants to do. Where I think it does work is I think it’s genuinely a ‘cool’ film. The cast are great, it looks great, and some of the dialogue is funny. The problem is the cinematography is so good you just end up holding it to a higher standard. Hopefully that makes sense.

I really really enjoyed this movie. I’ve seen it twice now & I’m kicking myself for not getting out to see it in theaters. I would have eaten the audience reaction Up. 🍽️ I can definitely see some people absolutely not clicking with the HARD left turn it takes, but something about it tickled the right spot in my brain.

I thought it was cool. I hated Farley (sp?). I reminded me, sort of, “Fatal Attraction”. I love the last scene that you could not show! Perfect song to end this film with.

That ending doesn’t get me in a good mood but I love Farleigh because I found him as a good guy who made mistakes, not an evil tug-a-war villain, and I forgave him. That’s the truth. Farleigh is BLACK and INNOCENT and everyone should forgive him on their own decisions while they learn from their mistakes and move on, so should we. Everyone should understand themselves to trust him now. This movie does remind me of Euphoria because of those dark twists.

i understand the criticism about "shock value" but i have to strongly disagree. i think this movie is a lot more focused on specifically queer desire and obsession than most people think, and for people who haven't experienced all-consuming queer desire, it can be difficult to understand why the unholy trinity of scenes (bath, vampire, grave) were included. but they're there because that is, a lot of the time, what desire feels like. it's violent. it makes you ill. it's impossible to escape. and this especially when it's non-heterosexual. i think i read an interview with emerald fennell at one point where she brought up the same thing and mentioned, like, those scenes are there because they have to be. that's the most honest, sincere portrayal of gruesome desire that she could think of. and i agree 100%!

this movie is absolutely insane and i loved it to be honest. Was disgusted with some scenes but i was invested in the story especially in the second half
