"A WILL -- A WAY" REBUILDING OF WEST GERMANY 1951 GOVERNMENT FILM 59904

Made in 1951 by Zeit Im Film, Südwest-Film GmbH, "A Will -- A Way" is a somewhat typical post-WWII social education film. It focuses on how private initiatives can result in positive change in war torn Germany. Specifically, the film looks at how communities can come together to rebuild cities and villages, and without government help or intervention. Such messages were critical in a nation that had endured such a devastating defeat in 1945. Here, six years later, people are still shown living in ramshackle huts (1:04) and shattered ruins are commonplace (1:00). The end result of democracy in action is a youth center for the many children (12:39) who have nowhere to play or recreate. The kids are put to work as part of the project (12:45). The sign at 15:26 announces hope for the community and the future.

This is about displaced persons, very likely from former east Germany, now Poland or Tschechia, because ordered there, living in southern Germany at the outskirts of a southern German small town, the small town herself not effected by bombardments or other direct war actions. And the different profession of the displaced can't find work because they have been put into wrong places in the first place, farmers to the city, craftsmen to the fields. After successfull resettling the two the city gives 10k deutsch mark and the local bank 20k Deutsche Mark to have propper housing to become built, the (soon former) displaced now have job and income. A lot of small villages here in the Eifel have at least one street with houses and 'such people' of exactly that time - displaced germans they all of course. And common future had not been free of various tensions of course - housing alone couldn't overcome the hudge differences and experience between 'alien refugees' talking a very different low german dialekt and the local settlers in their long overcome rights. And we see, Leni Riefenstahl 'Triumph of the will' is still not dead, indoctrination by propaganda takes long to grow out - we will see how our time will cope/do with it.
