Here is the simple anology Fate classes is basically like a MOBA you know those different roles have multiple heroes who fulfill that role Well for Fate itself the servant classes is the same as that in which one class does not consist of just one person but actually multiple people(Heroic spirits who may or may not be a historical/mythology figure) who can fulfil that class of servants You may know that Gilgamesh is an archer but in fate stay night he is not one of the official servants anymore due to the grail that incarnates him to the real world so the Red Archer is a different guy Another example is the lancer of fate zero is a different guy compared to the one we have in FSN Spoiler alert! The lancer in zero is Diarmuid Ua Duibhne while the lancer of FSN is Cu chulainn also known as Setanta or The hound of culann (which is coincidentally they are both irish man) You can look up these historical figure IRL counterparts in an actual history So that's the simple explanation i can come up with 👍

I was v new to Fate series as a whole and apparently i feel like everything was pretty easy to understand except for certain monologues that were cut in the anime opposed to the VN. Its just weird seeing people struggle and confuse so many things that i thought were pretty self explanatory - and reading explanation (such as yours) just for people to have a better understanding. >____

Fate UBW route probably has the best in terms of overall plot. But if you want cool fights, then heaven's feel route is better. I suggest Madoka Magica after the whole Fate Series. It has the same feels and the fight choreography is great too.

I think you already know this but i will just leave it here. Fate series is a visual novel/game where it had three routes depending on the decision of which girl, Shiro (You as a player) choose. There are three routes, which is the aftermath to the Fate Zero. The three routes are - 1.Fate route (Shirou chooses Saber) - it was adapted by Studio Deen but the adaptation was not quite good. 2. Unlimited Blade Works ( Shiro chooses Rin) 3. Heavens Feel ( Shiro chooses Sakura). All the route's storyline are good,maybe someday Saber route will be animated by Ufotable. We saber fans want it.

Incase u guys forgot... the summon circle is already there from fate zero when iriasviel getting weaken and maya draw that to put her in... and for why saber getting summoned.. its bcuz kiritsugu put scabbard in emiya to save him... if u want to summon specific servant u need a certain artifacts or relic that have connection to those servant... so that scabbard in emiya is why saber being called again in this war

For the record, lancer's (cu cuhlainn) noble fantasm is an attack that reverses how things happen. It isnt "because I throw my spear, your heart is pierced" his noble fantasm makes it "because your heart is pierced, I throw my spear" that means saber dodged an attack that had already hit her before it was even launched. That's also why archer said he would have lost. It's impossible to dodge that attack

Saber was summon because of kiritsugi putting saber relic to shiro body thats the only way to summon king arthur. Only specific relic can summon a specific hero. And its FATE by the way. Haha

I should clarify since you two seem confused. (If you dont want to read long, in short the servants arent the same people from fate/zero they are just heroic spirits sharing the same class as those from the 4th war.) The 7 servant Classes are just containers for the heroic spirits similar to in rpgs where there is the tank, the mage,etc. The servants in this grail war the 5th Holy Grail War are different from the servants from the 4th Holy Grail war which happened in Fate/Zero they just have the same class thats why they are still called archer, saber, Lancer, etc. Coincidentally a heroic spirit can fit into multiple classes based on their history and legends. Lets take Saber for example, her true name is King Arthur. She is summoned as a saber due to her having Excalibur as her noble phantasm but she can also fit into the other class such as Lancer in which she has her holy lance Rhongomyniad. The heroic spirits that are summoned into these class containers are different people not memories, personalities but different people altogether thats why they have different fighting styles. They are not the same people and servant as those from fate/zero. The reason saber is the same is not because she won but because she was summoned again as for why and how she was summoned it would be revealed later into the story so I wont spoil that. Gilgamesh still remains because her was incarnated by the black mud that spilled on himfrom the grail in the end on fate/zero

to refresh memory of characters: rin tohsaka: daughter of tokiomi who died to kirei sakura matou: originally sakura tohsaka but was forced to be given to the matou family zouken pulled some experiments on her shirou emiya: child that kiritsugu found in the fire also servants arent the same, the grail basically auto searches the most compatible servant for you, doesnt matter what class and also if you use a catalyst, guaranteed to get the servant youre looking for

Interesting fact that wasn't explained in the UBW or Heavan's Feel anime is that the reason Saber was summoned was because Kiritsugu put Avalon inside of Shirou the same thing he put inside of Irisviel back in Fate/Zero in order to save him.

Fate/Zero was written after Fate/Stay Night and by a different author, so you shouldn't expect them to be very similar. Also the Clock Tower is basically college for mages, so Waver was at least 18 by the time of Fate/Zero (I think he was 19 but do not quote me on that). He wasn't as young as some of these masters, who are around 16/17.

Lancer Noble Phantams is one of my favorite, Gae bolg, the spear reversed cause and effect, which means that times travel, originally at the moment lancer activate the Noble P. the foe will have the heart crushed already and the spear will follow the path that took to land the strike where you received it, meaning if there is a future where lancer will have landed the hit, you will be receaving that strike on the past

lancer's spear is cursed with a "Bullseye" or "Cant miss" spell/curse that buff his noble phantasm since it cant miss so dodge or alter direction wont work, block only (saber armor and defense spells/passive in work here that save her)

The little girl that reminds you of Irisveil? Yes, she is Illyasviel, daughter of Emiya Kiritsugu and Irisveil von Einzbern. Emiya Shirou being in the Grail War is a complete freak accident, the same as the Master for Caster from Fate Zero. It is because no 7th Servant has been summoned by a Master, so the Holy Grail will pick the next best qualified mage within Fuyuki City to be in the Grail War as the 7th Master and summon a Servant from the last unsummoned class for them. Coincidentally, in Shirou's body is Avalon, the healing Noble Phantasm Kiritsugu used in the previous Grail War, as Kiritsugu put it into Shirou's body when he saved him from the catastrophe all those years ago. The connection between Avalon and King Arthur is what summoned the very same Saber coincidentally.

just so you know that in UBW the only servant that is the same from Fate Zero will be saber. the holy grail itself randomly selects seven people to be masters, even though from what we can tell there are reserved spots for the Einzburg, Mato and Tosaka family. from there, there are seven servants randomly selected by the grail unless you use a catalyst like how Tokiomi used the snake skin, Kiritsugu used the scabbard of Excalibur and Waver used one for Iskandar. the servants reviled to you right now are as fallowed Saber: Artoria Pendragon weilder of Excalibur and the King of Knights. Archer: cant say his name without spoilers but everyone knows him as either Housewife or Satan at this point and has nothing to do with Gilgamesh just so you know. Lancer: can't revile his name without spoils but he has nothing to do with Diarmuid, they are completely different servants and people all together. Rider: she hasn't been shown to you yet outside of intro Caster: she hasn't been shown to you yet outside of intro Assassin: he hasn't been shown to you yet outside of intro Berserker: he hasn't been shown to you yet outside of intro and imma say this one last time the only reacurring servant are Artoria and Gilgamesh, but he's considered a rouge servant (at least that is what I classify him as), and none of the other servant classes are the same from Zero

Ok, since its bugging me let me clarify some things once and for all in this long ass comment XD.... 1) the reason the summoned saber class servant of this war is the same as last war isnt because saber won the last war...technicly gilgamesh won (saber dissapeared and gil not...if a servant wins the war they are allowed to remain after the war if the master is still alive afterwards and not disapear).. the reason she was resummoned will be lowkey explained in s2 of ubw... 2) since you might still not have understood it corectly... In a holy grail war a master summons a servant aka. A hero from the past... These heroes are catogorized in 7 classes and each class can contain diffrent heroes or even alternate versions of a diffrent classes hero...(for example gilgamesh can be summoned as a archer or as a caster, or the current lancer can also be summoned as a caster)... Since ,exept for saber and gilgamesh, every servant in fate ubw is a diffrent person than the servants from fate zero, no ubw servant will have any memories or skills from the zero servants...if youd allways think that fornexample a saber class servant is allways the same person but with diffrent look and no/restricted memories of last time beeing summoned, then shit would get even more confusing when you look at fate apocrypha where there aren 15 servants (2 from each class + a servant from a special class) or fate grand order with 100+ servants...

to clarify the scene where "time reversed" it was saber's skill called intuition which basically gave her an idea where the spear was gonna land in advance so she was able to defend against it, if not the wound would have definitely fatal (unless you include that lancer has a terrible luck stat)

Don't know why you two think Saber won the last war, cause she definitely DIDN'T. The last we saw of her, Saber was BEING TOYED WITH by Gilgamesh. Then Kiritsugu had her blow up the grail, and when the smoke clears: Saber is gone, Gilgamesh is incarnated, and Kirei's corpse was reanimated. Since no one made a wish, that means ( technically ) no one won, but most people would assume Gil won, since he was the last servant. So I'm not sure how you guy's think Saber getting blasted into nonexistence, means she won. And I'm REALLY not sure why you think she got summoned again BECAUSE she won. No matter how I look at it, I can't see your logic on that one, so I'm curious how you got to that conclusion. A few other people might have mentioned it, but I'll reiterate. Saber was summoned again because Shirou had a catalyst to summon her. Waver explains in episode 1 of Fate/Zero, that a catalyst is an artifact related to a specific heroic legend, and in order to summon a certain Heroic Spirit, you need a catalyst related to that person. If you don't have a catalyst, the Grail will summon a Servant that most closely matches your mental state ( I'm not sure if the wording I used on that last part is exactly correct, but it's something to that effect ). That's why when Waver used a piece of Iskandar's cloak, he summoned Rider Iskandar. And when Ryunosuke ( a serial killer ) didn't use a catalyst, he summoned Caster Gilles de Rais ( a serial killer ). You guys mentioned it in the reaction, but when Shirou is declaring his will to live, we see a flash of Avalon ( Excalibur's scabbard ). Meaning Shirou ( unknowingly ) used Avalon to summon Saber Artoria. I won't say where exactly Avalon was ( because spoilers ), but that's why saber was summoned again. Also, it's rare for Servants to remember things from former summonings, but since Saber both: reacted to the name Emiya and recognized the house they were at, it seems she does remember the last war.

Servants need a channeling item related to the legend of the hero itself to be summoned. For example in Fate Zero, Saber was summoned by Kiritsugu when he got her sword sheath, archer was summoned by Rin's father with the fossil of the first shed of a snake skin (something related to his legend in which a broadly speaking, he achieves immortality but a snake steals it from him and that would be the reason why they shed their skin according to that legend) and of the others well, I don't remember lmao, but the main point is that they are not summoned randomly.

Holy Grail picks 7 person to be the 7 masters. Obviously those from mage family will be participate, but in case there isn't enough candidate, the Holy Grail will picks random people to fill in the spot. Usually the closest one to be a mage will be selected. Shirou had the Magic Circuit and the catalyst to summon a Servant which is why he was picked.

In original fate stay night shirou and Saver's love story was both epic as well as extremely sad. This route of fate have rin and shirou as pairing. This Lancer is Cu Culainn. If he is summoned as caster then even Gilgamesh would have hard time Edit:- UBW animation is on a whole different level

the same heroes are not always summoned they use objects that are tied to famous warriors through out time in order to try and summon specific heroes so depending on the object used completely different heroes of each class can be summoned like archer he is a competely diffrent person from gilgamesh but he was a archer in life so he was summoned as a archer class same for the other heroes

FATE ROUTE SPOILERS!!! Saber and Kiritsugu didn't won the last War, as Kiritsugu renounced to the Grail after discovering what it really was. Servants usually don't maintain their memories from one summon to the other, because the manifestation of themselves that we see here are like "copies" of their souls that dwell in the Throne of Heroes (a place outside space and time where the souls of great Heroes that left a mark in history reside). After the summon ends, the copy simply disappears and so the memories of that specific summon are not recorded in the original soul (Spirit Origin) of the Servant. But Saber is different, she can maintain the memories between different summons and she can't turn into spiritual form for the same reason: because she's not dead yet. After the battle of Camlann, while she was on the verge of death and wished the Grail to save Britain, she made a contract with the Counter Force. She would have to serve as a Counter Guardian and in return be given the opportunity to obtain the Grail. So she continues to fight and is not permitted to die until she obtain the Grail, if she lose in a Grail War she just returns to the hill, frozen in time and waiting for the next summon.

I really think one needs to wat h Fate 2006 even tho it's not the best one y'know. the whole unlimited blade works stuff that happens in archer and berserker fight, CGI dragon and "people die if they're killed" aside, it serves as a great introduction imo. + points for saber
