The traveling sequence was actually one of my favorite parts of the film! 🤣 I just really enjoyed it visually. I don't know if I got symbolism from it other than he was trying to convey what a long journey it was and ultimately ending at a crossroads (which was a gorgeous GORGEOUS scene). I enjoyed the Romani village and the conviction of their beliefs/forewarning that he should not go forward and its to his own downfall that he ignored them as just merely superstitious. Plus i just think he was keeping pretty tight to the scenes of the 1979 version of Nosferatu. That same village scene is in that film. I think Eggers just loves adding cultures into his films. I understand why people thought parts were drawn out but I thought eveything was so stunning i didn't really notice any lull personally. I enjoyed this video! Thanks for making 🖤

Depth was missing?? Did we watch the same film? Seems like modern film viewers want everything explained and every single plot point served on a silver platter so they don't have to think for themselves. In gothic horror, the viewer fills in between the lines. Also, on a surface level, of course it is predictable... as most people know the plot of Dracula and the prior Nosferatu adaptations. He was obviously faithful to the source material but actually added said "missing" depth to characters that lacked it in previous iterations.

I knew this was going to be divisive and hence why I prefaced the video with that these are my hot takes. As someone who has thoroughly enjoyed The Norseman and The VVitch, yes I did feel like this was not as fleshed out as I expected or would have liked with some glaringly obvious flaws and plot holes. Its ironic you say that people (aka me) want it explained to them when I felt like the movie was actually too simple at times, too obvious, too palatable for the ‘common cinema viewer’. I am in fact hoping the extended version will give us more of what we are used to with gothic horror, the subtleties and the nuance that makes gothic horror so distinct and appealing

I loved this movie so much. Beautiful cinematography and acting. The VVitch was my favorite. I can’t wait for the extended cut. I felt what they were feeling. I feel like that is what they were going for

Like, that we knew that she would be married to death is a plus and not a minus - a lot of the story is an anticipation of destiny and the constant effort of the will embodied by the groom to pursue destiny's antithesis - freedom through will. Melancholic hopelessness, the joyful hope of love. Marx has argued that the vampire symbolises capital which sucks the lifeforce out of the worker but now i realize the marxist-spinozian dimension that joy, hope in the face of the order of things is exactly a theme of this movie.

with Isis (Aset) thrown into the mix, being a bride of death can relate to the Wesir (Osiris) and Aset (Isis) mythos.

I think Eggars wanted to expand on the source material from the original "Nosferatu" silent film from 1922 & the Herzog version of "Nosferatu the Vampyre" from 1979. He fleshed out the characters but didn't make many drastic changes trying to put his own spin on the original source material. Mostly he stayed away from the common Dracula tropes despite the original Nosferatu being an unauthorized adaptation of the original book Dracula by Bram Stoker.

Absolutely, but he has taken some liberties with exploring more of Ellen’s backstory and perspective which would have been interesting but I felt was too on the surface to really do what I believe Robert Eggers intended to do. How did she reach a spirit in Transylvania when she lives in Germany? Did she have occult knowledge? Or is Nosferatu purely a manifestation of her own dark desires which has a couple of questions arise too which I have in the conclusion section of my video. I just feel like it feels almost half-done? Not fully fledged out

I think it harmed the movie a bit that the relationship of Orlok and Ellen was a bit too non consensual for both parties to be a interesting core for the movie. And its clear to me now this was the most essential aspect of a Dracula story to get right. The interesting thing about the original Dracula novel and Coppola movie(the most authentic version of Dracula I have seen personally) is that there was some kind of implied love triangle going on. Like Mina was sincerely in deep love with Jonathan, but she could not help but love Dracula as well as their connection connection was fate and greater than her and her personal will... or was it? Was it truly a fated connection or was it just Mina personally having feelings for Dracula? When she makes advances on Professor Van Helsing was it truly just Dracula's influence or was there some part of her that truly wanted to act that way and now was just using this "loss" of agency as an excuse to just let go?! To see and wonder about these things was a very interesting part of the movie for me. And it was even more interesting that there was not really clear answer for it. Because how can you ever know a person that deeply?! How can a person even know themselves that deeply?! Not everything is meant to have a clear answer. But in Nosferatu it's clear that Ellen doesn't have any kind of real love or care for Orlok, and Orlok doesn't have any kind of real love for her. It's clearly implied their connection was more coincidental compared to Coppola's Dracula, as it was based purely on Ellen just happening to be a person who was more open spiritually than the average person. It eliminates both her agency and Orlok's agency in a very clear cut, non ambiguous way. And it just makes this connection far less interesting and and their characters thus for a lot of people it can feel like it's dragging on and going through the motions. That's why I disagree with you about Ellen giving in to lust. She did not give in to lust she just wanted to end it all, and just realized that was the only way to do it. She might have given him to lust maybe long time ago, when she chose to call out for him while she was lonely and melancholic, but we are far far beyond that point now. It gives her character some agency but thats really a personal thing for her and not related to Orlok. Her relationship with Orlok is forced upon both of them, disregarding their agencies as characters or people. This relationship itself is not interesting to the total lack of choice and agency in it, and thats the main problem of the movie.

I’m so glad you made this, I feel seen! I really wanted to love it, and after seeing so much hype from the occult community I was like… “what am I missing?!” I just looked up more about the extended version… apparently it’s only going to be 4 minutes longer than the director’s cut. Another disappointment!

Oh my gosh don’t get me started on the 4 min ‘extended cut’ what a disappointment 😭💔 Yeah it’s interesting because visually it is gorgeous and the vibes are perfect and I think thats why the goth and occult community are talking about it so much but the actual story? Meh 😭

Criticizing a remake for being "predictable" is rather redundant, don't ya think?
@EllaHarrison
@EllaHarrison 13 күн бұрын
No considering Robert Eggers added his own spin on this. Also not everyone has seen the original or other remakes
@MrSFblack
@MrSFblack 13 күн бұрын
@@EllaHarrisonEgger's "spin" is still rather subtle in the grand scheme of the film. Whether people have seen the original or not is beside the point. Most people know of the original even if they've never watched it. So, in the end, a remake is just that.... a remake! A retelling of the story that proceeded it. There may be liberties here or there, but the story will remain the same. This is why it's redundant to criticize a remake for being "predictable".

@ I’m not sure, I went with my husband. I would have stayed, because I need to end things 😅 I agree with the visuals and a very few scary parts. It was predictable and I don’t know: oh a carriage without riders, sure let’s get in…. 🤣😂 Also I had a very bad feeling with how Romanians were shown and talked to Romanians after that, how they thought about it. I read a very interesting review of a Romanian writer too.
