We came across a very friendly Common Wombat whilst driving on the West Coast of Tasmania, Australia.
Wombats are endemic to Australia and are closely related to Koalas. They dwell on the ground and dig deep, long and intricate burrow systems, which in turn encourage plant growth and provide habitats for other animals and insects. They are known to protect their burrow systems with their secret weapon: their bum.
A wombat rump is made up of fused plates surrounded by cartilage and fat, and is extremely tough. If an unwanted animal tries to enter a wombat burrow, they can use the bum to smash the invader against the roof of their home with deadly force.
On the lighter side of things, wombats have been known to share their burrows with other animals fleeing danger in times of bushfires.
It seems they have good judge of character.
