It’s so cute when they jump. It’s. A picture of faith. First you jump and then you grow wings. Great video!!

So sweet! I just moved to an area where we have had some wood ducks showing up. They are really skittish. Looking to set up boxes for them.

That is my oldest video; I've made many of them in more recent years that you might enjoy. Also in the spring during nesting I stream live cameras from three wood duck (and sometimes hooded merganser) nests. I have a blog where you can subscribe to receive an email when something interesting happens (e.g. hatching, jump day). You will find all of these at birdsgv.com It's good to know that you enjoyed the video. Thanks for your comment!

Yes. The most we've seen here is 31 eggs in the nest (provided by at least 3 hens since one will lay about a dozen) and of these, 25 hatched! For more information about this behavior please go to birdsgv.com and use the "Ducks Info" link. Also there are live cameras there. Ducklings are hatching today 5/18 and jumping tomorrow!

I have a pond and for the first time I’ve seen wood ducks, I really want to help them nest and I wanted to ask you if you made the house for them
@7kabel73 жыл бұрын
I made the West nest box, which has the side view camera. The other two (East and South) were made by others, although I modified them to put a camera on the roof. You can see more information on my web site: birdsgv.com If you click on the "Ducks Info" link (scroll down to find it) you will find sections that describe the nest boxes and cameras.

@@7kabel7 thanks! I have made the box and I am ready to set it up on a dead tree at the edge of the pond. Is there a way to attract the ducks? They come to the pond and swim but I’ve never seen where they nest. How can I attract them to the box?
@7kabel72 жыл бұрын
@@jogarbellotto9471 Hi Jo, If you're seeing wood ducks (or hooded mergansers) in the spring and you put a suitable nest box nearby where the ducks see it that is all that you can do. It's up to the ducks to choose to use it. Wood ducks use human-made nest boxes quite readily, but sometimes they don't. It can depend on their population and the availability of nesting sites. The things I know about what they require are explained at my web site: birdsgv.com - scroll down and follow the "Ducks Info" link and then read the section on that page under the heading "Nest Boxes". (I think you already know that.) One thing not mentioned there: one year the ducks would kick around in the nest box for a few minutes (that's normal pre-laying behavior, and they can do that on many daily visits before laying the first egg) but the problem was none of them ever settled in to actually lay an egg. Just short visits, kicking and digging with their bills, then they'd leave. I finally decided maybe the wood shavings were too deep; that is, maybe I'd put in too much and they instinctively knew the eggs could be hard to keep track of? Anyway I removed some handfuls of shavings (leaving about 3 inches of depth) and a duck did settle in. Maybe that was cause-effect, or not, it's hard to be sure. Otherwise, I can't think of anything to add to what is already on my web site. I wish you the best! You also can reach me for questions/discussion via my address as-shown at bottom of the site pages: moderator@birdsgv.com

I just see these comments! Thank you so much for your reply. We installed the box and put some shavings, ducks have been swimming on the pond but so far none have approached the box. We’ll keep waiting 😊.

Love your video! Thank you! I have a wood duck house and have purchased a trail camera which doesn't seem to capture the wood ducks. It does capture other wildlife. Can you recommend a trail camera?
