I stole the pre-game mechanism from Harnmaster and the motivations (or whatever those were called) from Burning Wheel and have used them to good effect in other games. Of course, in Traveller the pregame part is taken care of.

As a long time Star Fleet Battles player (who's trying to get into AWAW), I can COMPLETELY empathize with both the "the rules are too complicated" and "I'll be eaten by sharks" fears from new beginners. In SFB, we've got the problem that most of the player base has 30+ years of experience, and can easily wipe the floor with most new players until they've gotten enough time in to wrap their heads around the fundamentals of not just playing the game, but playing it well. That makes it hard to recruit. (And there's a lot less complexity tolerance in the hobby these days, too.)

Very true, but there are quite a few new players, so there is always someone available with an equal level of (in)experience. While there are very few "sharklike" AWAW players, there is no doubt the best games are between opponents of roughly equal experience/caliber, regardless of level.

@3:50 Yeah I'd rather have repetition and a bit of redundancy in rules than have struggle finding the rule. I have AWAR sitting on my shelf; I used to play a lot of Third Reich on PC, and I'm just waiting for the time to be able to sit down and read it all.

One thing I would like to see is an actual play through whether solo or group makes no difference. AAR’s are only so good but actual play throughs help with rules. I played Third Reich when I was in college 40 years ago and bought this game on a whim pulled out the rules and said they’ve grown a lot. Some I’m not sure add much and others add quite a bit. Visual learning helps.

There already is a video with a sample turn - it is on the Warplanner playlist: kzbin.info/www/bejne/haS7gp6GZ9-HoLs If you mean a video documentation of an entire game, that will never happen. While this is not really the place to discuss it, it would be interesting to hear what changes to the original Third Reich you aren't sure add much. Presumably all the changes add something (and in the almost fifty years since Third Reich was first published, a lot has changed).

This is that master monster mashup of Prados classic "Third Reich" and the Pacific campaign version, right?
