The Trump election and populist movements in Europe and Asia can be considered akin to true revolutionary movements--ideologically driven; brought about by a slow-down in social mobility, elite factionalization and decline in public goods; and pursuing a revolutionary agenda including propagandist reshaping of reality and a radical reconfiguration of international relations. This talk will show the common demographic factors behind these developments, and examine whether historical lessons can be drawn regarding the durability of such revolutionary movements in modern democratic states.

I agree with some of the analysis, but this lecture makes it seem like people's perceptions about where the inequality and corruption lies are inaccurate and wrong-headed. That the status quo has an inevitability to it. I do not think this is the case. Nor do I think that real change will come by co-opting establishment power players as figureheads. And by the way, Clinton lost because she was a terrible candidate and the figurehead of a bought-out party who offered the people nothing because to offer anything was to bite the hand that feeds them so lavishly.

Jantes Inferno inequality is normal but when social mobility stops. It creates reactions and revenge.Humans need hope social mobility incentivises people to try harder if you freeze decrease social mobility then incentives no longer work and peoples productivity drops.Capitalism in Europe is actually causing this lack of enthusiasm for work much like communism did in the 1980s where workers did not work more because nothing would change. In fact workers often despised those who tried harder because it forced those who knew nothing would improve anyway would be forced to work harder so they tried to crush those individuals. In capitalism if you have to work harder and make less you achieve the loss of productivity. If you take out debt you become risk averse if your risk averse you are entrepreneurial and you make no progress long term you slow down. Hence why people are voting outside of traditional parties. No incentive to keep picking the status quo.

great description the "entrenched elite" After you Dobert Jowney Runior pointed out the elites project their failure onto others. Its amazing that its 2022 and people are still watching this and commenting. About 2 years ago Saggar Enjeti pointed out a comment by Ngaire Woods the New Zealand economist made at the World Economic Forum that went basically: _"The good news is the elites have never trusted each other more than they do know. The bad news is the rest of the population has never trusted the elites less."_ The scary thing about that comment was she was *NOT* pointing out as a problem problem like Jack Goldstone is pointing out here, where the elites have failed to deliver. Ngaire Woods was *COMPLAINING* about how the rest of the population didn't trust them when they should. Her attitude was exactly the type Jack describes as to why people wanted change and didn't care where that change came from. Its amazing how many people forget that before he beat Hilary Clinton, Trump steam rolled over 16 GOP establishment candidates. Trump tapped into a mountain of anger and frustration the elites refused to recognise and STILL DON'T. Prof Richard Wolff (who's a Marxist and teaches Marxism) said once the people of Virginia did vote in the economic interests in 2016 when they switched form voting Blue to Red. Because despite voting Blue for decades the Dems had failed to deliver again and again and again.

The effect of financial inequality in society can't simply be measured by mere envy or individual perception; arguably the worst outcomes of inequality are that the wealthy gain more control of the government, ensure their own financial interests (e.g. lower taxes, fewer regulations) are at the expense of others.

his points about failing to raise taxes, and not spending enough in certain sectors, may be true for the US and maybe the UK, but they're certainly not true for all the other countries in the world where populist leaders have gained traction, especially France and the other European countries. especially in France, Greece and Italy those higher taxes have not been used wisely, the public debt has become unsustainable, and crony capitalism blocks growth. and they're not true also for the ones that slipped back into autocracy (russia, turkey) - their long and complex history of adopting and rejecting the "western" system already gives enough reasons. he doesn't touch on delocalization and automation enough, which explain a lot of what he's talking about instead. his points on immigration, demography and cultural threat are true but certainly nothing new, we'd like to hear realistic solutions now.

@@realisticallyspeaking9196 Yea not sure its always obvious how much we focus on individuals rather than systemic mistakes while actors short term political gain most benefit from the lack of complexities in pushing such a focus. I'd personally say the clintons were a realization of political success around taking up the mantle of conservative politicians including a new business sector backing in tech. Which does not translate into "more corrupt than republicans, or evil." yet an adapted version of the success reagan/george bush sr had via the backing of industry. The alternative was to keep losing, and stick to what was rapidly being painted as the past(welfare, education, social democrats etc, keynes). The result is, no one notices that Obama was mandated by liberals/conservatives that rejected the extreme Neo Con response to clintons sucesses. Now the public sees them as the same, or blames the total victory of capital elites on the clintons who were operating as mitigation and adapting to the new rules of politics.

@@Yor_gamma_ix_bae But the individual is seeking one of the highest leadership position in the world. You can say they were focused on short term gains but lets be honest. The word leadership has the ethos of taking responsibility for the actions and inactions of the group or organization the leader belongs to. If a father had a child that was bullying people in his/her school, and he didn't know. Here is the thing, he should have known. Its his/her child. It's his responsibility. The fact that so many people in leadership positions or considered 'experts' didn't know that globalism removed 80-90 percent manufacturing jobs, and that most of them were democrat supporting states. Why are the 'experts' or leaders shocked when they stopped voting for them? Ask yourself, who betrayed who?

This was thrust upon us by elite, consumers of labor in the greatest treachery of human history. You know this, Jack. How disappointing. Also, what's this constant "they're worried their culture is ending?" Come on Jack, you know about evolution, kin selection, social capital and diversity. You know what they're truly worried about -- that their extended family, the white race, is going extinct. Many of them would embrace any new culture if it meant their people would continue to survive in a homogenous homeland.

sableblack x Do you know the definition of insanity? Its doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Americans are insane. They (well, these who can be bothered to show up) vote for different clowns every 4 years, and after every election, surprise, nothing changes. And then the smartest of them become frustrated and talk about "the system is broken" and "the founding fathers" and 1776, while the rest sincerely belive that in 4 years they will vote for someone else and itll be different. It wont. Because the founding fathers set up the system that way, US was a oligarchy from day 1. The portion (about 30-40%) of populace in the name of the majority (100%) elects random people to rule the country for the benefit of the few (0,1%).

I commend the speaker for his adept use of rhetoric, drawing from the wisdom of Greek philosophers Plato and Aristotle. Initially, for the first 30 minutes, he constructs a compelling critique of our society. However, midway through, he pivots his argument, suggesting that embracing left-wing policies elites advocate will rectify our societal woes. This assertion needs to be revised. Liberal policies have been given ample opportunity since the 1980s, yet they have consistently failed to uplift the underprivileged. It's akin to the old adage: insanity is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results. The speaker portrays dissenting elites as mere spoilers, insinuating they seek to hoard resources. This portrayal lacks nuance. Figures like Elon Musk challenge such generalizations, as they actively contribute to societal progress rather than merely amass wealth. While the speaker's rhetoric is commendable, I dissent. Let's not allow the so-called elites to dictate solutions unchallenged. It's imperative to critically assess policies and actors, striving for genuine progress. I encourage others to critically engage with these ideas. Feel free to share and disseminate this message widely.

The other problem is the decrease in purchasing power of the dollar as a result of the FED printing funny money which the elite get first shot at enriching themselves and impoverishing contracted, hourly, and salaried workers and pensioners down the line who can't buy as much by the time the money reaches them. My food bill is SIX TIMES what it was in October 2008 without any other change (and you can be sure my income is not up). That is massive inflation. Thank GOD that gas is still below $2.50/gal!

rawereawera - I definitely see your point. It would have to be links to Watsons recent talks, with the title of the talk, and maybe some TYT hosts could discuss the video, the length of which depending on its importance. Just acknowledging Watsons importance to current events will demonstrate TYT's commitment to truth. It can only benefit TYTs image. On the other side, it will bring a lot more eyes to Watsons videos, the talks will educate thousands more people. There is definitely a way they can do this without stepping on the university's ethics, and without looking like TYT is exploiting Watson. And the progressive umbrella is going to have to be an enormous umbrella - willing to give shelter, comfort, and protection to all American groups and individuals who value the truth, basic fairness, and human life and liberty - whether it be Black Lives Matter, Redacted Tonight, Greenpeace, or the Greenwich Village Poetry Group. How closely affiliated any organizations become will be up to how comfortable they are with each other.

A lot of the problems you mention can be easily traced to immigration from poor countries by what should be called the second wave. The best and brightest from those countries came here as soon as they could, 10 or more years ago. Now we are getting the poorly prepared from those countries. Often ill, not very smart, and hard to educate. A healthy society and economy can support a certain percentage of non productive - disabled, uneducable, elderly, ill, and generationally unwilling to work - people, but there is a limit. A lot of our problem is a result of the Obama years of ignoring riots and dangerous behavior IF it was performed by minorities. This made all of us feel unsafe. The other problem is that we were supposed to "solve" illegal immigration in the 80's. THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN and I'll guess that by two degrees of separation most Americans have experience with an illegal immigrant driver that injured them financially or physically or both. So, simply ENFORCING the borders and the LAW within our borders should help a great deal.

He talks about immigration as being good for the economy. This is true but not for the reasons he says. Many people come here with astounding educations but work for minimum wage or less. This is what helps the economy is paying less for talented people that will do the job that Americans wont do for twice the amount being paid to the immigrants.
