I heard of a real-life case of a Scottish chess player who did nothing but study games of master players for years. He did not play at all. Eventually he entered a chess tournament and won it. You really can learn to play chess well by intensively studying the games of masters.

Imagine some poor schmoe spending years locked in a room with one book to learn English, and when he gets out it turns out to have been Finnegan's Wake. :/

If you had no prior knowledge of a language apart from what sounds the letter's made. And you were lock in the cell with one book that you just kept reading. It would be interesting to see if it was possible to learn a language that way as we are built to learn language. Like would our brains eventually work out meaning without any translation.
