A YEAR LATER, Can Shattered Space Change Starfield's Fortunes?

Shattered Space is Starfield’s first big expansion, coming hot a full year after its launch in 2023. The DLC releases on September 30th, but we can’t wait to see what additions it can add to Starfield’s base experience, and if it’s enough to change the game’s fortunes going forward.
The development team at Bethesda hasn’t been shy about their intent to right the wrongs inherent in Starfield. They specifically cite empty locations and aimless story as aspects that are vastly improved in Shattered Space.
What is least expected is the shift in tone that Shattered Space exhibits. The DLC takes on a much darker, almost horror-infused style, emphasizing spider- like creatures that ambush the player from behind. It’ll be interesting to see what direction this mysterious fantastical story takes when we enter the game on September 30th .

People are still replaying Daggerfall ffs, a 30 year old game, and it even saw a whole massive fan remake in Unity.

I'm trying to stay positive, but the writing really let me down. Much of it was emotionally flat, felt like filler, or was not how people actually talk. But... I'll try to keep as much an open mind as possible.

I'm a die hard starfield fan and one of my only genuine complaints is the writing to. It just feels sanitized I miss the unhinged Bethesda, hopefully, they lock in and go back to their roots.

Writing is one thing, but I also feel like Bethesda also needs to do more motion captured scenes and just overall animate their npcs better. All characters feel so unnatural during conversations because they mostly stand in place, rarely move their hands and overall look very stiff. I'm not saying they should go full cinematic adventure but some well crafted scenes here and there can do a lot for immersion.

No conflict, every NPC I encountered seemed like a simp, space travel is boring dogsh*t, thats not even counting the load screens, only VR would bring me back. Star Citizen may have problems, but at least it has depth. Starfield gameplay just has no point....

I'm excited to check out Shattered Space. I bounced off the main game pretty quick but this dlc is much more interesting for me to check out. Also helps i received it as a gift.

Firstly, Bethesda releasing any game that wasn't the next elder scrolls, was always going to be railed on. I think a lot of what made starfield cool and unique went right over a lot of people's heads. The big thing that made me start to get bored was the redundant, and continuing reuse of buildings, dungeon design, etc. Sure it makes sense that there will be some continuity between building materials/styles, because it's all essentially one culture doing it. But it doesn't literally need to be identical buildings on 3 different planets so that when you are inside, you can't even tell where you are. With the random generation of buildings, while simply excluding previously used combinations from the algorithm, at least for each playthrough, and the addition of a plethora of randomly placed, named high level equipment and other loot. That would have made exploring every nook and cranny more worthwhile, but also far less mundane. Make at least 1-2 random Bethesda style encounters on each planet and tie it into the RNG, and it would have made exploring far more exciting. But the thing that I find people who played the game and went....Meh, largely missed out on, is the fact that it isn't a game intended to be a single playthrough story. The game is intended, and REALLY opens up when you start NG+. The ENTIRE story, and main world mechanic is about exploring multiple universes, with infinite possibilities. Starting a new game puts you back into a fresh universe with the fore knowledge of your previous choices, and let's you impact the next in an infinite loop of playthroughs. If the random world generating, loot, and encounter tables were tied into that: it would have made the whole thing mind bendinly cool. That would be a worthwhile mod, and would take the game to insane heights. As it is now, you can bump into older versions of yourself in alternate universes, and even recruit yourself as a companion/crew member. Still waiting for the ship filled with identical protagonists (NOT from mods or console commands lol) And of course the shattered space dlc was going to be far out of the way....its the lore of the alliance being explored and really the only one that wasn't super fleshed out in the vanilla game.

This games good with 50+ Star Wars mods, but man it’s hard to stay immersed in the game when the writing and quest outcomes, dialogue etc feels like it was written for a child.

Making a linear dlc that flat out ignores the issues the base game has will not solve a thing. At best, it’ll be interesting to play through the 15-20 hours of new content the first time and a chore to do every time after. Already seeing them try to do damage control for TES 6. They need to let go of IP’s that other developers could work wonders with using half the budget and development team, Fallout especially.

No. The best we can hope for is a “Far Harbor situation” ie a beautiful singular planet with plenty of room to explore and a quest line that’s far, far……..far superior to the base game. I wasn’t a huge fan of fallout 4’s story, but it’s no where near the complete snooze fest Starfield’s was, Shattered Space better be phenomenal or it will never be installed again.

I suspect shattered space is just gonna be one catered world , which is great don't get me wrong, but the base game still needs a lot more done with it. There was sooo much that I liked, crappy UI fast travel aside, that they like gave up on or brushed aside to meet deadlines. After a while of realizing all POI's where EXACTLY THE SAME it completely killed my desire to play the game along with how the story ends, it made everything truly feel pointless like a entirely fake universe. (which I guess was the premise, but its a bad one)

Fundamentally the game is too flawed to be saved. It's a space game where you can't travel in space. You fast traveled to a pocket where your "ship" just sits in until you fast travel somewhere else. Also the whole multivers narrative is both played out and at the same time makes the universe less ingaging because there are multiple versions of everyone and everything. Nothing really matters in a multivers setting.

If you want to travel from one side of the galaxy map to the other you don't travel the distance. You enter two to three loading screens. Also the game takes place where humanity has only explored a small corner of our galaxy. There were limitless possibilities for a compelling story. What did we get? Another multiverse story where people who can travel through reality and what do they do? Play an endless scavenger hunt? That's the great story of Starfield? Keep doing the same thing over and over again to grind for powers?

After preordering the most expensive edition I'm not going to continually pay for more game. I'd like more to do in Starfield but I've already paid a reasonable amount for the full game already. These companies can't expect this stuff to be ok with everyone. I'd literally rather buy another game than buy a game and have to buy more of the game to make it more enjoyable.
