A salute to your mother. 🙌👏❤️ "A mystery to the man i truly never got to know" . that hits so hard all of our dads give away so much sometimes far too much and still they don't ever express their feelings or worse their struggles. True heroes without capes for sure. This reminds me of the video i watched recently of gukesh (youngest chess world champion ever) giving his trophy to mom and his dad was sitting in the middle he didn't even look at the trophy he immediately transfered it to his wife. That man has left his career to support his son and travel with him throughout the world for championships.

This was a really beautiful video and a lovely tribute to your parents. Your mum is definitely one of the most resilient people I have ever heard of. My dad passed away in September 2024 and it seems that I only got to know some aspects of his life when looking through boxes of old pictures, together with my mum and hearing someone the stories around those images. She likes to point out that my two younger brothers and I have definitely inherited dad’s somewhat chaotic and slightly devious sense of humor.

Awesome video and I appreciate hearing the deep meanings behind your choices! Regarding the GMT function, I’d like to point out for others who might be unaware that having a rotating GMT bezel would be more useful because it allows you to track up to 3 timezones. Also I personally use a traveler GMT and it’s much more convenient for me when traveling than a caller GMT. It doesn’t take long to adjust a caller GMT, I just like the simplicity of adjusting the traveler’s jumping hour hand during my flight

Maurice. I am moved by your story, and I love how you have both the Pressage and the Alpinist are paired as tributes to your parents. As a son of Jamaican Immigrants to Canada, the Seiko I wear is also a tribute to my father (who is still with us) as a testament to hard work, where we came from, and where we're headed. Remember the "keeps a licking and keeps on ticking"? This is the tie that binds and pushes me (us) onward and upwards.

I love the fact you chose to remember your mom using something you interact with every day. On the watch itself, I just got a SPB121 (regular alpinist, not GMT) and I doubt the measurements on Seiko's site are accurate. Comparing it to other watches I own which are 40mm this one looks smaller.

Seiko Alpinist is a solid watch. Two watch collection is good, one sport watch that you can wear in different situations and another that is more dressy.

For people other than Maurice: Don't delude yourself into rationalizing costly purchases of things "YOU" like via having it as a trinket to remind you of those time and places dear to you. This cheapens their memories, and if you god forbid convince yourself of your lies, you might even develop a habit of overspending. Because of course this large amount of money is worth it when it comes to your first job, or lovely grandmother, or that big raise, right? My uncle has a habit of commissioning very costly art pieces to commemorate events and it has (alongside other events) contributed to financial difficulties for my cousins. If you have spare cash, invest first. I hope Maurice is responsible with his cash and they are also an income source for him via his youtube channel, but us on the other hand, we should be careful, particularly of loading high emotional value to objects that did not earn it without you giving it to them.

You won’t find the travelers GMT functionality, more useful, unless you’re travels, require switching times zone frequently. I prefer traveler GMTs, mainly due to them being the movement choice, in the watches I prefer. The Alpinist GMT is an excellent travel watch, functional, looks great and doesn’t draw attention from the street criminal element. You’re Explorer, on the other hand…..😂.

The most USEFUL watch I've ever seen is a smart watch, specifically, an Apple Watch. You can easily change the watch face design to just about any style you like, even from analog to digital, choose a color that matches your outfit, add pictures of your family to the watch face, change the band, use it for a compass and gps, check your depth in water or elevation, let it tap your wrist and notify you when to turn left or right when navigating, set timers and alarms, check your heart rate and oxygen levels, use it as a flashlight or a (less bright) night light, use the calculator, use it to find your other devices like your phone or headphones, track your workouts, walkie talkie someone, make calls and texts, unlock your computer, control your smart tv, make SOS calls, check the decibel levels, use it as a camera monitor,... and a bunch of other things. Sure, some may find other watches to be more sentimental, or beloved, but I don't think there are more useful watches than smart watches. useful: able to be used for a practical purpose or in several ways.

I just added smart switches to my house so now I also use my smart watch to turn on and off my lights from bed. I also use it to control my air purifiers in the bedroom and living room, and my ecobee thermostat.
