Trott and Smith were childhood friends, Ross became Trotts best mate in Uni, after Uni they got Smith involved. Thats how it goes i believe.

Trott did actually get shot at the end there and bled out off camera, the Trott we see today is in fact a clone.

I suspected as much. I theorize there have actually been several failed attempts at recreating the original. All have either self destructed or been terminated by Smith, accept for version 3.04.2 which is now living a happy life simply going by the name Nugget.
