The building was originally the West Lodge gatehouse (off the old Great North Road) to Stapleton Park. This was a very grand estate, the parkland and stables remain but the hall was knocked down in the 1930s after falling into disuse. It’s very sad to see the lodge in such a state now, the neoclassical columned frontage shows what little grandeur remains of what would have greeted visitors to the estate back in the 18th century.

Believe it or not, the Rolling Stones stayed there one night when they appeared at Doncaster Gaumont in 1964,in those days, it hadn't been extended ,it was just mainly the guest house and petrol pumps, there were a few phhoto's taken of them in the Exel Bowling alley, which they visited after their show.

When I frequented this place it was called 'The A1 Lodge'. It was like a roadhouse, it opened until 2 am so everybody was already leathered before they landed there. If I'd have known you were 'exploring' here you could have looked for my front teeth.
