That long take followed by her walking back and then crying in her husband's arms was phenomenal and a perfect ending for the film, it really got me, I can remember being in the position of the man and having to say goodbye to a close friend who I can't meet again.

As an immigrant, that migrated to the US at a very young age like Nora. It quickly stood out to me that the movie was not necessarily a love story. To me it was about the struggle of Nora with her identity. It's a beautiful film because it can be interpreted as a love story or a story about the struggles with your identity. Loved it!

My interpretation is that Nora chose herself the entire film. It was her decision to cut off contact with Hae Sung when they were 24 years old that led to the situation. They had a chance to be together and see each other then, but she decided that being a writer was more important to her. Then when he shows up 12 year later, she feels conflicted about her decision because her Korean side has been reawakened and she remembers who she was in Korea and realizes she is still Korean at heart. Nora can't be a writer in New York and be with him at the same time because he doesn't belong in New York. He belongs in Korea. When Nora cut off contact, she was basically choosing her writing career over him and put him on her waiting list. Hae Sung may have realized that he was just a backup option by the end of the film and leaves without asking her to be with him in this lifetime. He will probably be able to move on with his life realizing that Nora isn't the same person he remembers anymore, and Nora will be haunted by what could have been. In many ways, she feels stronger about Hae Sung than her husband, but she definitely likes being in New York more than Korea. So she chose to stay in New York for her career and to be with the person that fits in with her chosen life in New York.
@timgregory82
@timgregory82 25 күн бұрын
if he was a backup option she would have stayed in touch with him during the relationship with Arthur. But she didnt. And he decided to travel to NYC. I got no sense watching them together in NY that she saw him as a backup. She is certainly ambitious and made her decisions based on that but I dont think she led him along or anything like that. She was always clear probably most so when she says 'but now we are adults'. My take anyway.

I agree that this movie was about closure. It was what I got from it after watching it the other day. Plus the end credit song was just perfect. The film was imperfect, realistic and almost true to life for our generation, when YM, Skype were still a new thing to connect and reconnect. Brought out so many bitter and good memories, and I am glad I get to close the chapter of this book in my life and finally move on with contentment and closure.

Watched the movie for the first time 45 minutes ago... still processing... but my heart hurts in such a unique and humane way. Thanks for reaching out to a part of myself I didn't know was there... the husband's role broke me
