Last train on the Packers Hill Railway

August 2014 and with Vale View Farm - my father Patrick Henshaw's former home - about to be sold at public auction, we cleared the track and ran some last trains on the 7.25" Packers Hill Miniature Railway. This video was taken on a phone and had been long forgotten until August 2017, when we finally got it onto a hard-drive.
The first short trip takes the left fork at the power-operated points down to the yard alongside the farmhouse. Then both trains reverse back beyond the points, and set them for the right-hand road down to the wood, a quarter of a mile away. We then trundle off down the 1:30 gradient, over some rather dubious bridges and round some rather exciting curves.
A wonderful day that will be remembered fondly by all concerned. The line was a genuine miniature agricultural tramway.
Richard Ellam is driving his own 'tram' on the video. We had only taken it there a few weeks before, and were delighted at the way it handled the sometimes challenging track. Not one derailment.

@Robert Swann Wrong. The two words mean EXACTLY the same. 'Railway and railroad are two different words but with the same terminology and used in context with same meaning. The difference lies in just the words. They both are the same..' www.difference.wiki/railway-vs-railroad/ Have a nice day, Mr. Anal.

It would certainly be heartbreaking to see someone's endless work and dedication to a project like that be taken apart. I'm certain that over the years of operation, many people were in awe at this endeavor and enjoyed the this adventure through the property. Thanks for sharing this with us.

That's a shame you lost the home and property. I hope you were able to keep the trains and track. That was the coolest thing I have seen and am so jealous. I wish I had the property and the equipment to build a mini railroad. I wish you all the VERY BEST!! Thank You for sharing this video.

I was a friend of Pat's in the early 1990s. I remember visiting when he was building the railway and having an "interesting" gravity ride down the line culminating in a spectacular derailment on a tight curve at the bottom of a gradient.

My pipe dream would be a modest property with a lot of interesting varied land around it and a 2’ contractor line so I can have a reason to shunt trains of firewood next to the house and rotate seasoning wood in BRUTE style wagons from the sawing area where I’d keep the landrover and trailer. I’ve got the latter but the firewood has to be accommodated in the front garden of our thirties semi. Got a 16 mm line at the back though. This is a really lovely little line, you must miss it.

Nice little railway. I think if I had the means to buy a property with a little railway on it I would be all over it, restore the lines and open it up for clubs and families. I always thought the old Michael Jackson property near Los Olivos, CA was a missed opportunity for an investor. You had a ready made Hogwarts complete with 3' narrow gauge RR, station and grounds. At the very least it could have been a smaller wine train for visitors to the area.

1. Why is the property being sold ? 2. What powers that loco ? It is very quiet.
@DavidHenshawatob
@DavidHenshawatob 7 жыл бұрын
The railway lived on with 'weekend maintenance' after my father died in 2011, but when my mother died in 2014, the estate was split up between five siblings, and only two wanted a minimal gauge railway to survive, so it had to close. The loco is battery-electric. It used to struggle a bit climbing the 1:30 sections with more than one wagon, but could descent at hairy speed. Incidentally, everything came back to our line in Dorchester (including the 1/4-mile of track) and will no doubt rise again

They're sealed beam headlights, possibly the smaller 5-inch type used on some sports cars. Normally, that would make power consumption unrealistically high, but I carefully made three holes in the back glass and glued in ultra-bright LEDs. Tricky to do, but very effective

Nothing "neat" about it... the property is a mess, trash and debris everywhere!
